PORT ANGELES, Wash. - U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks has asked the new head of the federal Department of Homeland Security to review recent Border Patrol activity on the North Olympic Peninsula.

A representative of U.S. Sen. Patty Murray is also collecting information from officials in Jefferson and Clallam counties on the public's response to increased Border Patrol activity.

Dicks says the national security value of inconveniencing hundreds of U.S. citizen motorists each time it stops someone is unclear to him and his constituents.

Border Patrol agents based in Port Angeles have increased from four to 24 during the last two years. Federal officials have also announced plans to build a facility with a short-term detention center in Port Angeles this year
