Finally, Congress to listen to those who guard border

It's not just illegal immigrants who live in the shadows.
Those who patrol our borders will have a chance to step into the light today when Congress opens an investigation into reported military incursions from Mexico.

Some solid investigative reporting by Daily Bulletin reporters Sara A. Carter and Mason Stockstill over the past few weeks has exposed a wild frontier along the U.S.-Mexican border, especially along the Rio Grande River in Texas, where Border Patrol agents and local law enforcement are overmatched in numbers and arms by smugglers, gangs and what appear to be Mexican military units.

The Daily Bulletin disclosed last month that there have been 216 incursions by Mexican military personnel into the United States since 1996, according to Department of Homeland Security documents.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff downplayed the seriousness of the incursions, but Inland Valley Congressman David Dreier, R-Glendora, called the reports ‘‘horrifyingâ€
