Immigration reform in North Carolina is down to 1 bill that is still alive after the Democratic leadership in the Senate and House killed all other bills without a vote.

HB 1474 can still pass this year because it has received a fiscal note showing some financial impact which means it is not subject to the Crossover Deadline. All other immigration reform bills were stymied by the Democratic leadership and not even allowed to be debated in committee. Representative Earl called for the fiscal note with the backing of Rep. Culpepper derailing the bill before the deadline.

“The Democratic leadership would not let bills that would secure our licenses, our state budget, our voter files, or even our citizens safety from illegal aliens be discussed at all.� Says William Gheen. “The leadership knows that many Democrats would join with Republicans to make these bills law so they are supporting illegal aliens by inaction and procedural tricks.�

All immigration reform bills were suppressed except for HB 1474 which passed in the House Judiciary 3 Committee with unanimous bi-partisan support. HB 1474 is now the only hope for any action on illegal immigration in North Carolina this year. HB 1474 has enough support to pass the NC House. The Democratic leadership will not allow this bill to come to the floor without massive public outcry.

“By the latest estimates, there will be at least another 50,000 illegal aliens in North Carolina by this time next year,� says Gheen. “The public needs to put the pressure on the Democratic leadership in the House and the Senate to pass HB 1474. NC Tax Benefits should not go to illegals. That money is for NC Residents.�

ALIPAC is encouraging the public to tell legislators not to block the only bill that would address illegal immigration this year. The public is encouraged to say “Don’t come home from Raleigh without addressing this issue. William Gheen will be returning to his position as Senator Hugh Webster’s Legislative Assistant after a two month temporarily leave of absence to defeat HB 1183. It is up to the public now to demand reform.
