BAE gets $18.4 million to upgrade two new destroyers

The destroyer Spruance will be commissioned in Key West, Florida on Oct. 1. ” US Navy"

The Defense Department has awarded BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair $18.4 million to perform post-shakedown cruise repairs and upgrades to the William P. Lawrence and the Spruance, two of the Navy's newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The Lawrence was comissioned only four months ago, and the Spruance will be commissioned in Key West, Florida on Oct. 1st. The ship will head to its homeport of San Diego two days later. The Lawrence is also homeported in San Diego. It is not unusual for new ships to undergo repairs and upgrades after shakedown cruises. And much of the work, on the West Coast, is done at BAE.

In June, the Defense Department said it will give the San Diego yard upwards of $315 million over the next five years to repair destroyers. (Full story.)
