Wikimedia CommonsRemember when Los Angeles Unified Schools spent $1 billion trying to buy iPads for every kid in the district—and then, when that became a fiasco, considered even more expensive options?
Well, Steve Lopez of the Los Angeles Times reported this week that some LA schools don't even have math textbooks for all grades:
With the conversion to Common Core standards, L.A. Unified purchased new math books for eighth grade, but not for sixth or seventh. The reason was lack of funding.
"We're left to fend for ourselves," said Kravets, who, like other math teachers has scoured the Internet for materials and made copies for students.
"We're chained to the copy machines," said Larry Rubin, another Palms Middle School math teacher. Rubin said he spends more than an hour on lesson plans in the evening and as much as 45 minutes at the copy machine the next day.
Talk about putting the cart before the horse. Superintendent John Deasy had money to burn on boondoggle after boondoggle, but couldn't be bothered to make sure that the classrooms he oversees are minimally equipped for basic instruction? Lopez takes him to task for this and other mistakes, including a failed tracking system that caused some students to never receive class assignments:
And by the way, what's L.A. Unified Supt. John Deasy doing on a tour of South Korea when he should be on a tour of Jefferson with a clipboard and a bullhorn, directing student traffic while a fix is made, and finally taking the blame for rolling out the ill-fated system despite warnings that it wasn't ready?
Deasy just announced his retirement; hopefully his successor will dare to dream a little smaller, albeit more competently.
Incidentally, the situation at Palms Middle School is an indictment of Common Core as well. The new standards rearrange the levels at which students learn certain concepts, and the approach requires entirely new teaching methods and materials. It's not possible to half-and-half it between the old way and the Common Core way: This will generate both gaps and overlaps in a child's education—as well as massive confusion. I would like to see the kids put through that experience try to pass one of the rigorous Core-required standardized tests.
Schools have to be fully Core-aligned, or stick with what they already got. But given the significant cost of being Core-aligned, this reality can be a major problem, as Palms Middle School's case illustrates. Of course, it's possible for administrators to navigate such difficulties with more finesse than Deasy evidently did.

We didn't have "no child left behind"
    We didn't have Common core.
We learned to research through books.
We played outside all day and came in when the street lights came on..
Our first TV was a small black and white and we had 3 channels.
Went to bed at 8pm and got up at 5 am and somehow we all graduated and managed to get jobs right out of high school.
    Our education was LIFE!

“Teachers Love Common Core..” Well Not So Much

October 30, 2014 By Shane Vander Hart

Gallup released some more polling information on the Common Core State Standards. They found that teachers were pretty divided on the Common Core with more teachers having a negative opinion.Only 15% had a very positive view with 26% who said they had a somewhat positive view. 28% of teachers said they had a somewhat negative view of the Common Core with 16% with a very negative view.Surely it’s because they are misinformed right?Heh… How can Common Core advocates explain this away.Gallup attempts to do this…
However, within these Common Core states, the majority of teachers who say they work in schools where the Common Core standards were fully implemented in the 2013-2014 school year feel good about it: 61% view it positively versus 35% negatively. Among teachers in Common Core states whose schools had not yet fully implemented the standards last year, views are 37% positive versus 43% negative.
Even so, 1/3 of teachers where the standards have been implemented still have a negative opinion, this is a far cry from the overwhelming support we were told the standards had among educators.

[Watch] Socialists, Obama Don’t Want Parents Raising Their Kids – They Belong To The State And In State Custody

Posted on November 1, 2014 by Rick Wells

Just as Obama and Clinton have told entrepreuers that it is the State, not them who built their businesses and create jobs, now the Democrat socialists are spreading the Obama doctrine of State ownership of our children. It’s in the early stages, but if you’ve got your eyes and ears open, the message is unmistakable.

It’s so inefficient to have one parent’s earning capacity diminished or eliminated by staying home with their children. In the modern socialist utopia, both parents or “adult units” should be contributing to the good of the cooperative, the State. After all, those future workers are really State property anyway, and as such, their rightful place is under government control and influence.

Obama made his comments in a speech in Rhode Island on Friday in which he promoted the idea of public preschool in America, a need he claims is based upon the high cost of daycare. But everything is relative. If there were not so many illegal aliens and legal immigrants as well being given American jobs and diluting American wages, more parents could afford daycare at its current prices. More parents could also afford the luxury of having one stay home and raise their children, if those wage destroying realities weren’t forcing them into the workplace.

Instead of facing and correcting the negative earning situation that they have created and dumped upon the American people, big brother is going to step in and take care of our children for us. Obama said, “Moms and dads deserve a great place to drop their kids off every day that doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg. We need better child care, day care, early child education policies.” Now we apparently have a right to dump our kids off in Obama’s caring institutions of indoctrination.

According to Mr. Big Government, we need to turn our kids over to his people, to get that proper liberal upbringing, “the programming,” that only the government can provide. He actually used that language in his speech, saying, “Too often parents have no choice but to put their kids in cheaper day care that maybe doesn’t have the kinds of programming that makes a big difference in a child’s development.” While the people may be hearing and thinking education, that isn’t what he said. He’s talking programming.

    video at link below

    http://video.breitbart.com/?ndn.trac...p&vid=28081456

Of course Obama brought the justification back to those socialist false ideals of equality rather than equal opportunity and the Democrat’s fabricated war on women, saying, “Sometimes, someone, usually Mom, leaves the workplace to stay home with the kids, which then leaves her earning a lower wage for the rest of her life as a result.

He then made a most telling comment, saying, “That’s not a choice we want Americans to make.”

He didn’t say it’s not a choice we want Americans forced to make, he said that is not the choice he wants them to make. The simple socialist ideal is that the workers belong working and the children belong with the state, being groomed for their future role as their wealth producers, or slaves to the state. All of that traditional family unit nonsense is just so outdated and inefficient in this modern unisex era. We’ve moved beyond that now, and that’s what he’ll be teaching what used to be your children. Surely the Soviet model will work this time with Obama in charge.

The simple and obvious truth is that the government is here to indoctrinate and take possession of your kids. You people who think they are yours, “you didn’t create that.” Now turn them over and get back to work.

The full video is below, take a listen, if you can stand to listen to the arrogant socialist imposter for twenty-six minutes.

Common Core Co-Author Admits He Wrote Curriculum to End “White Privilege”

    Dean Garrison November 6, 2014

According to Onan Coca, "Dr. David Pook is a professor at Granite State College in Manchester, New Hampshire. He's also the chair of the History Department and one of the authors of the Common Core standards. He was a guest at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics when he opened up on his reasons for participating in the creation of the Common Core standards."

So what were his reasons? You are about to learn the motivation behind Common Core through one of its authors.
The truth is, not surprisingly to some, that Common Core is very racist and very political.
According to Dr. Pook, he helped write it to balance the scales because he, and many others, are benefiting from some mythical 'white privilege' that was not earned.

No, it's not about uniform and effective educational standards that benefit our children.

This is about a leftist agenda and yet another shining example of the trainwreck called political correctness.
Dr. Pook's startling admission is contained within the video below:

"The reason why I helped write the standards and the reason why I am here today is that as a white male in society I am given a lot of privilege that I didn't earn."

Jason Dewitt of Top Right News notes:
Pook's role is documented at the pro-Common Core website, AchieveTheCore.com, which confirms that he "worked closely with Susan Pimentel and the Council of Chief State Officers in drafting the Core Standards for English Language Arts, and currently has several projects underway with Student Achievement Partners on work aligned with the CCSS."

Ironically, as Campus Reform notes, the Derryfield School where Pook works does not use the Common Core State Standards and has a student body that is 91 percent white.
Common Core is not only about irrational and bizarre math problems as some might think. Make no mistake, this program is about indoctrinating our children into a leftist way of thinking which includes destructive ideas such as the embracing of Islam and normalizing sexual promiscuity.

Is it any wonder that states are rejecting and suing the federal government over Common Core?

Common Core is just another weapon in the leftist war on our children.

NEW HEROES: School Replaces Mural Honoring Mother Teresa, others With Oprah, Obama and J.K. Rowling

    Posted on November 13, 2014

Yet another reason not to send your kids to public school. Check this out…

For years, boys and girls at South Arbor Charter Academy have been inspired by Heroes Hall – a corridor featuring murals that honored the Space Shuttle Columbia astronauts, Mother Teresa, Betsy Ross and Albert Einstein.

But many parents are furious after the principal had the murals replaced with paintings honoring President Obama, J.K. Rowling and Oprah.
“This is no longer a hall of heroes,” parent Craig Bergman told me. “Now we have a hall of celebrities.”

The original mural had been a part of the Michigan charter school for years. It included a diverse group of national and global “heroes” – from Gandhi to the astronauts who were killed when the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded over Texas.

Those images were replaced with President Obama, Oprah, Maya Angelou, “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling and Walt Disney.
Parent Todd Holliday told me the new mural sends the wrong message to children in the K-8 school.

“My biggest concern is my kid seeing these murals for the next four years – thinking they represent what a hero is,” Holliday told me. “They might be successful business people but they aren’t really heroes.”

School replaces 'hall of heroes' murals honoring Mother Teresa, others with Oprah, J.K. Rowling

“This is no longer a hall of heroes,” parent Craig Bergman told me. “Now we have a hall of celebrities.”

Those images were replaced with President Obama, Oprah, Maya Angelou, "Harry Potter" author J.K.

Bergman said the school’s new mural really transforms the concept of what makes a person a hero.

“The mere fact that you have talent doesn’t mean you are a hero,” he said. “I want someone who made a life investment – perhaps they even sacrificed their life – so that our society and so our world could be a better place.”

So what the heck is going on here? Why did the South Arbor Charter Academy remove a mural memorializing the fallen Columbia astronauts and replace it with one honoring President Obama?

School spokesperson Jennifer Hoff said it was part of an intentional shift from “historical heroes” to “modern-day heroes.”

“Heroes Hall has been a part of the school’s fabric for years,” she said. “In fact, the old mural had been on the wall for at least 11 years. As with all things over time, it was showing its age from the activities of being an active school and needed some repair.”

So why not just hire an artist and touch up Mother Teresa? Why paint over her entire face? And who made that decision?

Bergman told me the principal appointed a blue-ribbon panel of four staffers to select who the new heroes should be.

“There was no parental involvement,” he said. “The principal of the school hand-picked and self-appointed (the group). Once they gave her their final decisions, she solely approved the list.”

And judging from who they selected – it’s pretty clear the new and improved Heroes Hall is not – ahem – fair and balanced.

“Previously, it was very well-balanced and respected a lot of different thoughts,” Bergman said. “Instead, it’s become more of a political issue. There’s definitely a certain genre of pictures here.”

Hoff said Heroes Hall is a “tangible way for students to see that despite circumstances in life, you can achieve great things through hard work, dedication, and the moral focus virtues.”

What, pray tell, are “moral focus virtues”?

According to Hoff, the school culture is built on virtues that emphasize “wisdom, respect, gratitude, self-control, perseverance, courage, encouragement, compassion and integrity.”

And the new heroes, she said, embody those virtues.

She said Rowling shows the children wisdom, Steve Jobs shows the children integrity, Oprah represents compassion, Disney represents courage, and Maya Angelou shows the children perseverance.

As for President Obama – well he shows the children encouragement, Hoff said.

“Our goal all along is to encourage our students to believe in themselves, work hard and be brave enough to dream,” she said.
But that’s just not sitting well with folks like Mr. Bergman.

“They may be some of the most influential people in American history, but they are not heroes,” he said.

For the record, the children are not required to sing praise songs or genuflect in the presence of the president’s mural.

At the end of the day – the school is going to do what the school is going to do. But it’s really a shame the principal didn’t ask the public for their recommendations.

How about the Navy SEALs who got Usama bin Laden? What about the firefighters and police officers who died on 9-/11 or those who defended our consulate in Benghazi?

    Those are true American heroes.
