Police are searching for a woman seen on an amateur video savagely beating another woman as the victim's 2-year-old son watched and pleaded for the violence to stop.

Salem video beating suspect Latia Harris sought by police; victim suffers impaired vision

NJ.com: Authorities continued their search Thursday for a suspect captured on amateur video repeatedly beating a woman as the victim's toddler son watched and bystanders did nothing to intervene and stop the attack.

The victim was left with limited vision in her left eye and she was also threatened with being shot during the attack, according to the warrant issued for the suspect, Latia Harris, 25, of Salem.
The video, briefly posted on Facebook, shows the victim's 2-year-old young son trying to protect his mother by kicking her assailant inthe attack which took place Tuesday night.
"... this video is physically sickening to watch," said Salem City Chief of Police John Pelura III.
Pelura said Harris remained at large Thursday morning. Harris is an employee at McDonald's, where she encountered the victim. The subsequent attack occurred while she was on duty and after she followed the victim out of the store, according to police.
"Her whereabouts are unknown, but we are actively seeking her," Pelura said. The chief said when police went to her last known address — a Salem City Housing Authority complex on Anderson Drive — it was "vacant."
Harris is facing charges of aggravated assault and two counts of making terroristic threats.
Additional charges could also be filed against her, Pelura said.
In the warrant issued for her arrest, authorities charge Harris attempted to "cause significant bodily injury" to the victim "under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life."
Police said that the beating left the victim, a 27-year-old Salem resident, with "limited function" of her left eye, numerous contusions and a broken nose.
It says that Harris also was "threatening to shoot the victim while punching her about the face."
The warrant also charges her with attempting to kick the victim's son in the face.
Pelura said the victim, whose name has not been released, told police a woman named "Tia" who works at McDonald's on East Broadway in the city assaulted her and "accused her of spreading rumors about her (Harris) and her manager." In the video the suspect is dressed in what appears to be a McDonald's restaurant employee uniform — a burgundy shirt and black pants.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon by McDonald's corporate office, owner/operator of the Salem restaurant Jim Burlaga said he was aware of the incident involving his employee.
"I am extremely disturbed by this kind of behavior and it goes against the values and standards that I expect from my employees in my restaurants.

"This employee will not be serving customers pending this important police investigation and I'm fully cooperating with the local police in this matter," he added.
The assault took place Tuesday evening around 7 p.m. on a path that leads through a grassy and partially wooded area between the McDonald's and the Harvest Point Apartments on Grieves Parkway.
At one point the suspect threatens to strike the victim's young son.
The video has drawn attention from news outlets in the United States and beyond.
Pelura said the circumstances around this incident are disturbing.
"There is a moral and social breakdown in the fabric of our society which is clearly evident when a woman gets pummeled in broad daylight in front of her child while a dozen people pull out their phones to record the incident instead of calling for help," Pelura said. "There is so little regard for human life — by the actor and the bystanders."
The victim, who was left bloodied after being beaten — mostly about the face — was taken to The Memorial Hospital of Salem County, Mannington Township for treatment. Authorities were alerted after receiving a call from someone at the guardhouse outside of Harvest Point Apartments.
Police say Harris has not shown up at her job at McDonald's since the attack. The manager at McDonald's declined to comment and a request for comment from corporate has not been returned.
Police say they are now trying to locate Harris through family members. Bail has been set at $35,000.
Anyone with information on where Harris is is asked to call the Salem City Police Department at 856-935-0057.

Mother Savagely Beaten, Spat On as her Toddler Tries to Help; Bystanders Do Nothing

When someone is getting savagley beaten right in front of you, what’s the correct response? To those who witnessed this horrific attack the correct answer was grab your phone and make a video.

    Via NY Daily News:
The dozen people who witnessed an attack a New Jersey police chief labeled “physically sickening to watch” did not try to stop Tuesday’s assault in Salem or use their phones to call police. Instead, they stood by and make sure they recorded it.
“There is a moral and social breakdown in the fabric of our, society which is clearly evident when a woman gets pummeled in broad daylight in front of her child while a dozen people pull out their phones to record the incident instead of calling for help,” Salem Chief of Police John J. Pelura III said in a statement. “There is so little regard for human life — by the actor and the bystanders.

    Assaulted On Video

JUNE 26--Police today charged a female McDonald’s employee for the vicious beating of a New Jersey woman whose two-year-old small son tried to stop the attack, a video of which went viral this week.

Latia Harris, 25, has been named in a criminal complaint accusing her of aggravated assault and two counts of making terroristic threats, according to a court filing. The brutal attack occurred Tuesday evening in an open field behind a McDonald’s in Salem, a southwestern New Jersey city.
Harris, pictured in the above driver’s license photo, was wearing her McDonald’s uniform as she punched, kicked, and spat on the 27-year-old victim, who was “covered in blood” when emergency service workers arrived at the scene (she was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment).
A video of the attack (seen below) was posted to Facebook, where it was copied by Salem police. Investigators reported that the victim told them that “Tia who works at McDonalds” assaulted her and accused her of spreading rumors about her and her McDonald’s manager.
As seen on the video, during the assault Harris threatened to kick the victim’s son in the face. As his mother was being beaten, the boy kicked Harris several times in the leg. At the conclusion of the assault, Harris “spat on the victim and walked away asking those recording the incident not to post it on social media,” according to a police statement.
The complaint alleges that Harris also threatened to shoot the victim “while punching her about the face.”
Harris, who remains at large, has not reported to work since the June 24 incident. When she is apprehended, Harris will be booked into jail on the three felony counts, the bail for which has already been set at $35,000. (3 page)

Mom Violently Beaten as Her Toddler Tries to Help While Bystanders Watch

in News, Videos / by Amanda Shea / on June 26, 2014 at 7:59 pm /

A day in the park with her 2-year old son turned into horror for both the parent and child, when a woman viciously attacked the mother as the toddler looked on, screaming for the assault to stop.
Onlookers decided to catch the horrific incident on video with their cell phones, rather than intervening to save the woman and protect the child from more trauma.

The attack happened on Tuesday in the New Jersey city of Salem. Although there were plenty of witnesses on hand to at least call the police for assistance, bystanders instead used their phones to record the scene. Even with the crime caught on camera, nobody took the evidence to authorities, instead opting to post it to social media.
In the two days since the attack, Salem County police have identified the suspect as Latia Harris. The 25-year-old is now facing charges of aggravated assault and two counts of making terroristic threats.
In the video, Harris is seen wearing a McDonald’s uniform, where she is reportedly employed, as she repeatedly punches the victim in the head. The victim’s son stands next to Harris, kicking her and screaming for her to stop.
“Police in this county deal with this type of violence every day,” Salem Chief of Police John J. Pelura III said Wednesday. “Yet this video is physically sickening to watch.”
After the incident ceased, and the victim was badly beaten, a witness to the aftermath called police. Pelura said officers responded to a call Tuesday “for a woman who was covered in blood and appeared to have been assaulted.” He said the unidentified victim was “disoriented, confused and bleeding from the face.”
The 27-year-old victim told police that she was assaulted by a woman she works with named Tia who was allegedly upset with her for spreading rumors about her and her boss.
She was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Salem County, Mannington Township, for treatment.
The fact that onlookers stood by as this woman was brutalized in front of her son is extremely disheartening, They took the time and effort to post it to Facebook, but couldn’t be bothered with getting her the help she desperately needed.
“There is a moral and social breakdown in the fabric of our society which is clearly evident when a woman gets pummeled in broad daylight in front of her child while a dozen people pull out their phones to record the incident instead of calling for help,” Pelura said. “There is so little regard for human life — by the actor and the bystanders.”
There are two injured victims here, the mother and her son who had to endure the mental anguish of watching his mom helpless and severely hurt. This incident and the lack of public response speaks volumes of the degradation of morals in society, where too many people are more concerned with technology than helping others in need.
