"Whites only"? Man claims L.A. Starbucks denied him bathroom use

    Cbsnews

    CBS MoneyWatchApril 16, 2018

This article, "Whites only"? Man claims L.A. Starbucks denied him bathroom use, originally appeared on CBSNews.com

Another incident of alleged racial bias at Starbucks is stirring new outrage. A black man claims he was denied access to a bathroom at a Los Angeles store, even though a white man was given the entry code. Neither were paying customers.

The incident in Los Angeles, along with , has left Starbucks struggling with accusations of racism from coast to coast. Both events appear to have started when Starbucks employees refused to let black men use their store bathrooms, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller.

"Once the thing happened this past weekend in Philadelphia, that's when I was like, 'Hey, the same thing happened to me,'" Brandon Ward said. In the newly resurfaced video that was originally posted in January, a white Starbucks customer named Westin tells Ward he had no problems getting access to the bathroom. "You asked for the code and they just gave it to you, right?" Ward could be heard asking.
    "Yeah," Westin responded.

    "Before you made a purchase?"

"Yeah," Westin said. Ward, who was refused the code minutes earlier, then confronts a Starbucks manager about the apparent double standard. "This is a private business," the Starbucks employee said.
"This is not your business though," Ward said.
    "I am the store manager."
"Okay, you may be the store manager –" Ward started.
"And I'm asking you to leave right now. You're actually not allowed to be in here anymore. You need to leave," the manager said.

Ward said a security guard escorted him out before police arrived. "There should have been a sign right there that says whites only, because that's how they treated it," Ward said.

wouldn't answer questions about the latest video. He was in Philadelphia meeting with the city's mayor and police chief amid growing outcry and protests over the arrests of two black businessmen in a Starbucks last week. The men were denied using the store's bathroom because they weren't paying customers. When they refused to leave, a manager called 911. Johnson apologized and wants to meet with the men.

"Now there's been some calls for us to take action on the store manager. I believe that blame is misplaced. In fact, I think the focus of fixing this -- I own it. This is a management issue, and I am accountable," Johnson said in a video statement. Starbucks said the manager at the Philadelphia store who called 911 no longer works here. The company declined to say whether she left on her own, was fired, or transferred to a different location.

Post Alleging Center City Starbucks Refused to Let Police Sergeant Use Restroom Goes Viral

    By Morgan Zalot

Published at 10:25 AM EDT on Sep 13, 2015 | Updated at 6:36 PM EDT on Sep 14, 2015

No coffee, no restroom. An employee at a Philadelphia Starbucks is accused of denying a police officer access to the bathroom. It’s a story that went viral after a social media post. NBC10’s Rosemary Connors visited that very coffee shop on Monday. She has the story. (Published Monday, Sept. 14, 2015)

A downtown Philadelphia Starbucks is at the center of controversy this weekend after a Facebook post alleging that an employee of the coffee shop refused to allow a uniformed Philadelphia Police sergeant use the restroom went viral.

The post, which does not identify the sergeant involved, says he walked into the Starbucks at 13th and Chestnut streets and asked to use the restroom, for which a key code is required. The employee, according to the post, "State[d] in a loud voice ... that the bathroom is for paying customers only." The post goes on to say that the sergeant asked politely to use the restroom anyway, and that the Starbucks employee declined to grant access.

Officer Joe Leighthardt, who knows the sergeant, was the first to share his fellow officer's post about the incident, which happened Thursday or Friday of last week. Leighthardt said he personally has been to that Starbucks location several times on calls for service, but never as a customer.

"I didn't intend for it to go viral," Leighthardt said, adding that most people who have responded to the post have been supportive.

In reply to Leighthardt's post on Starbucks' official Facebook page, Starbucks wrote in part, "We are aware of this situation, and it is certainly not in line with the experience we want any of our customers to have in our stores. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future."

Starbucks also responded to the same Facebook post about the alleged incident asking for contact information for the officer involved so the company could reach out directly.

"We would like to discuss the situation with the police officer and hear from them directly about this experience," the company wrote in its comment. "If you happen to know who this was -- please have him/her send us a private message through our page with their contact info."

Leighthardt told NBC10 that he believes the sergeant has contacted Starbucks. He declined to comment when reached by NBC10.
Starbucks did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

NBC10's Rosemary Connors visited the Starbucks Monday and was allowed to use the bathroom without having to pay for anything. An employee at a Center City Starbucks, who did not want to be identified, also sent the following message to NBC10:

I work at a Center City Starbucks and we allow any customer to use the restroom, we often make an exception for uniformed police officers though, considering their presence keeps us safe.

I've worked for the company for 8 years, and there has always been a problem with non-customers trying to use our bathrooms for bathing or changing, or using drugs. Once, a co-worker of mine was stuck with a syringe while taking out the trash! Limiting our restrooms is for safety to our baristas, however I do agree that uniformed cops, PPA reps, and other federal, state and city employees, should have an exception be made for them.

Starbucks denies pregnant woman use of bathroom

Published October 02, 2014 Fox News

A Phoenix-area Starbucks is facing criticism for denying a pregnant woman use of its bathroom, even after she said she would buy an item.

Ilana Scheinker , who is eight-months pregnant, was driving with her husband when the urge to go suddenly hit.

She walked into a local Starbucks on Tuesday morning and asked to use the bathroom, which required a code to unlock the door. Scheinker says the barista refused, and told the mother-to-be that she needed to make a purchase first, reports 12 news.

"I said, 'I'm pregnant, I really have to use the bathroom now," Scheinker told 12 News.

The barista continued to withhold the code and that’s when Sheinker says she went to get her husband who had been waiting outside.

"My husband went up and again reiterated that, 'My wife is very pregnant,' " Scheinker told the station.
"Again he said no. Went back and forth. The man was unrelenting. My husband gave him his credit card and said, 'Charge me for anything.' The man refused. A woman standing behind said, 'I'm about to make a purchase, give me the code and I'll give it to her.'"

Things reportedly took an ugly turn when the Starbucks worker, who has not been identified told them leave threatened to call the police if the couple did not vacate the coffee store.

12 news reached out to Starbucks for comment and received this response:

"We failed to meet this customer's expectations of us, and we have apologized and are working to make it right. This experience is unacceptable and not indicative of the welcoming and respectful service we strive to offer our customers in our stores."

Although Scheinker says she was eventually able to use the bathroom at a nearby Subway, she is still upset by incident, thought she did receive a call from the location’s manager who did not witness the confrontation.

"She was shocked," Scheinker told 12 news. "Said that she would communicate that this is completely unacceptable to her employee."

Scheinker is reportedly boycotting Starbucks and urging others to do the same by speaking out to mothers’ group to prevent a similar occurrence.

In all fairness, the articles I posted are rather dated.
