FEDS fail to flag 4% of CA, 2% of TX, 1% of U.S. inmates

Immigration fails to flag 4% of California inmates

WASHINGTON -- A government audit for fiscal year 2009 shows immigration agents failed to flag four percent of California state inmates who were eligible for deportation.

A report by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General released this week says immigration agents identified 99 percent of federal prisoners who could be deported.

But Immigration and Customs Enforcement didn't identify four percent of state inmates in California or two percent of state inmates in Texas who could be deported because of staffing shortages.

Immigration agents regularly screen inmates in federal and state prisons before they are released to determine whether they are illegal immigrants or legal immigrants who could face deportation because of their criminal convictions.

Yep, and that one, or four, percent (whichever is true) could go on to rape, murder, or rob again. One percent is 1% too many, especially when you're talking about a murderer or rapist.

This is not a situation where you want to drop the ball!

It's 4% in CA. STATE prisons,
2% in TX. STATE prisons and
    1% in FEDERAL prisons
    according to the article.
    Just for clarification.
