'Holy death' reigns over drug dealer dens

LAREDO — When Webb County sheriff's deputies started photographing the eerie, sometimes blood-soaked shrines to shrouded skeletal figurines found at the homes and stash houses of big-time drug dealers, it was with the sense they were glimpsing into the psyche of a subculture.

That was a few years ago. Now, the elaborate displays of homage to the Santa Muerte, or holy death, seem more kitschy than creepy. The defiant faith that sinister-looking statues could summon netherworld power, which emerged as something associated with cartel kingpins tucked inside gated estates, has gone mainstream for the Mexican border's criminal element.

Thank you for posting the picture William--I was not familiar with the statue of Santa Muerte.

Was unfamiliar with the murder of Texas student Mark Kilroy in Matamoros, Mexico, in 1988 so I checked it out on the internet. Am not posting what 'rituals' were included in his death--too horrific.

Are the beheadings and over-kill (shooting someone 40 times) not merely to serve as intimidation but also part of a a 'ritual'?

Twice now wire booby traps were discovered on the American side of the border meant to decapitate border agents patrolling on ATV's.

Can one conclude an occult connection within the drug dealing subculture?
