Ivanka's company is reportedly exempt from those new Trump tariffs

    • Ivanka's company is reportedly exempt from those new Trump tariffs

Ivanka Trump branded clothing and shoes aren't subject to $150 billion in new tariffs her father has proposed.

      April 10, 2018

Last week, President Trump announced his intention to enact $150 billion of new tariffs on Chinese goods, but first daughter Ivanka Trump's company will be exempted.

Ivanka, a senior White House adviser, founded the Ivanka Trump line of clothing and shoes, which is largely made in China. Last month, Trump announced he would call for a 25% tariff on imported Chinese steel and a 10% tariff on imported aluminum.

    • Last Tuesday, the administration released a list of $50 billion in additional tariffs on 1,300 largely high-tech items, including batteries, semiconductors and heavy machinery. China responded by calling for $50 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods, including soybeans, pork and aircraft, traditional red-state products that would hurt Trump's base.

    • On Thursday, Trump returned the volley, threatening another $100 billion in tariffs. The move caused the stock market to drop and Republican Sen. Ben Sasse to say the president's tactics were "the dumbest possible way to do this."

    • Apparel and shoes were on none of the lists.
Ivanka Trump officially stepped down as president of her line in January 2017. But that didn't do much to forestall ethical line-blurring. She has been criticized for using her White House position as free advertising; the outfits she wears in TV appearances and on Instagram are often her own brand. In December 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported that 70 percent of the outfits Ivanka Trump wore on Instagram since March were … Ivanka Trump.

    • In January, the watchdog group Democracy Forward asked the Office of Government Ethics to look into the matter. "Ivanka Trump appears to be breaking ethics rules by using her official status to source advertisements that line her pockets," said Anne Harkavy, the executive director of Democracy Forward, in a statement. "Her official duties are supposed to benefit American taxpayers, and she should not exploit this position for personal financial gain."

Early in Trump's presidency, Ivanka had dinner at her father's Mar-a-Lago resort with Chinese president Xi Jinping. That day, three trademark applications she had filed in China were approved.

Neither are anyone else's clothing and shoes. Trump builds buildings made of steel and aluminum. They'll pay the tariffs on all of that which is far more than a tariff on clothing and shoes. Retailers are suffering, so a tariff on clothing and shoes which they sell worsens a problem that Trump wants to fix. Furthermore, we have domestic plants that can produce our steel and aluminum, 99% of all clothing and shoes are gone and have been for years, so there's no existing manufacturing capacity to make them at this time. The choice of items for tariffs had nothing to do with Ivanka.

That just goes with the territory. Kids of all Presidents get special treatment with their endeavors. Same with children of members of Congress, Governors, State Legislators, Mayors, City Council, County Commission, Sheriffs, Police Officers, DNC Big whigs, RNC Big Whigs, Corporate Big Whigs, Hollywood Big Whigs, Sports Big Whigs, Military Big Whigs, Church Big Whigs. Children of Big Whigs have advantages. Trump has used his Big Whigness to help the children of a lot of people, before he was President and as President.

I know and then people think she's getting some undue advantage when in that instance she isn't. That's not to say children of Presidents and other Big Whigs don't have advantages. That's just human nature and the way it is, but there's no advantage here on the tariff issue.

Ivanka's Fashion Line Exempted from Trump's Chinese Tariffs (Yes, Really)
    Apr 08, 2018 2:15pm EDT by SemDem197280

Has this contemptible carney family stopped even bothering to try to appear non-corrupt?

Ivanka Trump‘s clothing manufacturing company will be exempt from new proposed tariffs against China.
Just like Donald Trump’s mass-produced cheap clothing, Ivanka Trump’s fashion line is completely manufactured in China. Now, Trump officials swear that there was a carefully thought-out “algorithm" to determine who would get tariffs in order to have the “lowest impact" on Americans. Therefore, logically, we have a massive trade war over material being used to build everything from buildings, machines, roads, and cars. But tacky shoes? Thank goodness—you’re fine.

I’m certain the only math Trump used in that algorithm had to deal with Ivanka's measurements. (Sorry, but he really does fetishize his daughter. And this is another example of how his issues impact all of us.)

On a completely unrelated note, China happened to approve several new trademarks for Ivanka Trump’s fashion line the exact same day she had dinner with President Xi Jinping in her official capacity as White House advisor.

Perish the thought she’d ever use her offical capacity to help her business. She would never do that, except when she does. All the time. Like when she was hit with a copyright lawsuit alleging she stole a shoe design. A Trump lawyer essentially argued she couldn’t be sued as a “high-ranking government official”. She also used her position to avoid comment on labor violations in her sweat shop factories.

This kind of thing you’d expect from a third-world, corrupt dictatorship, which this administration is looking more like every day. (And thanks for your complicitness, GOP. Those tax cuts for the wealthy were so worth our democracy.)

To all those auto workers who are facing layoffs because of Trump’s ridiculous and universally-panned tariffs on steel and aluminium, I’m so sorry.

All I can say is it really sucks that Ivanka just didn’t own a car company.

Ivanka Trump’s Company Is Exempt From New Tariffs, Report Says, & What?

    By Daniella Bondar2 days ago

It looks like Ivanka Trump might be getting another perk in addition to her digs in the West Wing. President Donald Trump's new "deal" with China, might provide some benefits for the first daughter, according to Splinter. Ivanka Trump's company is exempt from new tariffs, reports say, so that's something.

President Trump plans to slap China's steel and aluminum industries with some new tariffs worth up to $50 billion dollars, but do you know what will be exempt from those tariffs? Clothing that's manufactured in China. You know whose clothing is manufactured in China? If you guessed Ivanka Trump's, congratulations, you are correct. Products from the Ivanka Trump line are made exclusively outside the United States in countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Indonesia, and, yes, China, according to PBS. What's more, China also approved three new trademarks for Trump's line in March 2017, so she stands to benefit from clothing being exempt from the new round of U.S. tariffs.

The government used an algorithm to determine which China-based industries should be exempt from the tariffs, to achieve "the lowest consumer impact," according to The Washington Post. They found that those industries just so happen to be consumer goods like clothing and toys. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative released a statement talking about the tariffs. It reads,
The proposed list of products is based on extensive interagency economic analysis and would target products that benefit from China’s industrial plans while minimizing the impact on the U.S. economy.

To be fair, though, it's not just Trump's clothing line that will be exempt. All companies that fall under exempt categories will be spared. But it does smell a little fishy given the tumultuous history Trump has had with perceived "ethical issues" upon entering the White House.

When President Trump won the election, Trump took on an official role in the White House as adviser to the president. At the time she was also running her company and watchdog group Democracy Forward felt that it was unethical. So, Ivanka Trump started to separate herself from her brand, and even changed her social media accounts to be separate, before stepping down completely in January 2017, according to The Cut.

However, despite no longer being the president of her company, Trump still appeared to be using her public platform to make money for her fashion line, and Democracy Forward published a letter in January 2018 asking that the Office of Government Ethics look into it. Democracy Forward Executive Director Anne Harkavy said,

Ivanka Trump appears to be breaking ethics rules by using her official status to source advertisements that line her pockets. Her official duties are supposed to benefit American taxpayers, and she should not exploit this position for personal financial gain.In December 2017, The Wall Street Journal took an in-depth look at Trump's outfits across her social media posts since she entered the West Wing in March 2017. They found that Trump was sporting her own brand in about 70 percent of posts. So basically, even though she's not running her company anymore, she's still a walking Ivanka Trump Fashion Line billboard.

Harkavy and Democracy Forward Senior Counsel Robin Thurston also pointed out that Trump knows about branding given her resume. The letter read,

As an experienced business executive in the world of lifestyle branding and marketing, Ms. Trump is almost certainly aware of the myriad ways in which her conduct feeds this ecosystem, and the ways in which she profits from it.So, what does she have to gain from promoting a company she no longer runs? Thanks for asking. The company is in a family-run trust (looked after by her husband Jared Kushner's family) which means that she still gets paid by the brand as the owner. So, she might not "technically" be the president of her company anymore, but Trump still makes money off it, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The whole tariff thing could just be a huge coincidence, but it also seems awfully convenient if you ask me.
