Uber and Lyft to stop services in Minneapolis after City Council passes minimum pay rate for rideshare drivers

Rideshare giants Uber and Lyft are threatening to suspend all operations in Minneapolis following the City Council's decision to enforce a minimum pay rate for rideshare drivers in the city. The ordinance, set to take effect on May 1, mandates rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft to compensate drivers a minimum rate of $1.40 per mile and $0.51 per minute – or a minimum of $5 per ride. The requirement applies to all transportation services in Minneapolis to ensure that rideshare drivers receive compensation on par with the city's hourly minimum wage, currently set at $15.57.
City Councilman Robin Wonsley (DSA-Seward), the lead author of the ordinance, said the minimum wage requirement is just "the right thing to do."
"For far too long, this industry has exploited workers of color and immigrant workers for cheap labor. We have the opportunity and the responsibility to build a rideshare industry that is not based on poverty wages and exploitation," Wonsley said. (Related: Uber drivers now discriminating against Black Trump supporters, essentially saying, "We don't serve your kind here.")
Councilman Jamal Osman (DFL-Cedar-Riverside), a co-author of the ordinance, echoed the statement and stressed the importance of fair compensation, particularly for immigrant drivers from East Africa.
"Drivers are human beings with families, and they deserve dignified minimum wages like all other workers … the Minneapolis City Council will not allow the East African community, or any community, to be exploited for cheap labor," Osman said.

Josh Gold, an Uber spokesperson, warned that the company would be forced to end its operations in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area, including the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, once the ordinance takes effect on May 1.
Meanwhile, Lyft spokesperson CJ Macklin said the company would only end its operations in Minneapolis. He added that Lyft will still operate in the airport, but will not be able to pick up or drop off passengers at any Minneapolis locations.
Uber and Lyft argued that they would comply with the ordinance only if the City Council agreed to lower the rate to $0.89 per mile and $0.49 per minute, which they claim would be sufficient to match the city's minimum wage of $15.57 per hour, according to data taken from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.
City ordinance gained mixed reactions from the public

The ordinance has gained mixed reactions not only from the public reliant on the transportation services but also from Uber and Lyft drivers.
Jake Clark, an Uber and Lyft driver from St. Paul opposes the ordinance. Clark said he has never earned less than $25 per hour and has earned as much as $75 per hour because he prioritizes customer services and strategies which rides to accept.
Meanwhile, Michael Sack, an Uber and Lyft driver with cerebral palsy and a member of the Minneapolis Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities, urged the government to find a solution to increase driver wages without compromising the affordability of ride-hailing services.
"It is critical to keep the cost of rides down because people with low incomes, which most individuals with impairments have, utilize Uber and Lyft," he said.
However, Marianne Brown, a suburban Uber driver, and Arianna Feldman, a Minneapolis resident reliant on Lyft due to health issues and limited access to public transport, both support the ordinance.
Brown, a Jamaican immigrant, said it is just right to have a fair minimum wage rate after Uber and Lyft have abused their drivers for too long.
Feldman echoed the statement and sided with the drivers: "I think it's really shameful that these multimillion-dollar companies are holding us hostage like this and punishing communities for demanding a very basic right to get compensated correctly."

Leptospirosis cases on the rise in NYC – symptoms include kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure and death

People in New York City are reportedly getting sick with a disease called leptospirosis that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says "affects humans and animals."An illness stemming from bacteria of the genus Leptospira, leptospirosis reportedly spreads through exposure to rat urine, rats being a prolific problem throughout the filthy Big Apple.
Symptoms of leptospirosis are wide ranging, often being mistaken for other diseases. Such symptoms include everything from kidney damage and meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord) to liver failure, respiratory disease and even sudden death.
"Human leptospirosis infections in NYC are largely associated with exposure to environments and materials contaminated with rat urine," the NYC Department of Health said in a statement.
(Related: After the failure of the monkeypox scare, the powers that be seem to be trying their hand at creating a bird flu and now maybe a leptospirosis "pandemic.")
    Dirty New York City

In 2023, New York City reported 24 human cases of leptospirosis, this being the highest number of cases ever reported in a single year. It may not sound like much, but this figure shows an upward trend in cases.
So far in 2024, there have been six reported cases of leptospirosis.
Chief Nerd, citing an article from the Epoch Times, tweeted that the news about all these increasing leptospirosis cases in New York City comes exactly one year after Mayor Eric Adams appointed Kathleen Corradi as the city's first-ever citywide director of rodent mitigation.
Dubbed the "rat czar," Corradi's new position is the product of a $3.5 million investment by Adams' office that aims to develop "an accelerated rat reduction plan" for the city.
"Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that is present globally and caused by several species of a spirochete bacteria of the genus Leptospira," the NYC Department of Health said. "In NYC, the primary species is Leptospira interrorgans, serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae which is associated with the Norway rat."
"Infected animals excrete the bacteria in their urine, and bacteria can persist in warm, moist environments for weeks. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infectious urine or urine contaminated water, soil, or food, entering the body through open wounds or mucous membranes."
In an average year, there are about 15 reported cases of leptospirosis in New York City. The 2023 caseload was nearly double that, and it remains to be seen how many cases occur for the entirety of 2024.
It is being reported that New York City's rat population is on the rise as well, having risen to around three million. In 2014, there were said to be just two million rats living in the Big Apple, representing a 50 percent increase in just a decade.
"Unfortunately for New Yorkers, they're a difficult problem to solve," said MMPC Pest Control about New York City's rat problem. "Rats are intelligent and resilient, enabling them to adapt to various environments. They can even learn to avoid traps and baits."
"And in a bustling place like New York City, where there's an abundance of food (think overflowing bins, piles of trash bags on curbs, and outdoor dining establishments) as well as hiding places (subway systems, sewers and construction zones), it's no wonder they’re thriving."
A few years back, a pair of dogs was also reported to have contracted leptospirosis at the McCarren Park dog run in Williamsburg, this showing how people's pets are also being negatively affected by the city's rat problem.
"New York City is the nation's second-most bed bug-infested city, too," one commenter noted about the filth of the Big Apple. "Yucky place. Not fit for a swamp creature."

PUR EVIL: Michigan Caregiver Viciously Beats Helpless 93-Year-Old Dementia Patient Before Choking Her – Victim’s Daughter Reveals How Family Caught the Attack on Tape (VIDEO)

By Cullen Linebarger Apr. 21, 2024 4:20 pm 1157 Comments

Credit: Genesee County Sheriff’s Office/@unlimited_lsA horrifying video has emerged showing the moment an evil Michigan caregiver assaulted a 93-year-old dementia patient, and the victim’s daughter is speaking out.
According to WEYI, the incident occurred at Landings of Genesee Valley in Flint, Michigan on April 4, but the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office obtained and released footage of the assault Thursday during a press conference.
The sick footage shows the perpetrator repeatedly smashing a full diaper over the elderly woman’s head while she sits in her wheelchair and raises her arms.

The sinister caregiver then chokes the woman in the bathroom before violently slapping her in the mouth. The footage concludes with the young monster raising her fists and threatening her victim.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office identified Dontia Shawnra Arrington as the person who assaulted the innocent old woman.

Suspect: Dontia Shawnra Arrington Credit: Genesee County Sheriff’s DepartmentDuring the press conference, Sheriff Chris Swanson said the patient had no clue what was happening due to her severe dementia.
“She has no idea what’s going on,” he said. “She can’t process what we process on a regular basis.”

“You see the vulnerability of the victim and the fact that she’s getting hit with a two-to-three-pound soiled diaper,” he continued. “But if that isn’t enough when she brought her hand across her throat in a chokehold, that can kill people, especially a 93-year-old.”
The heartbroken victim’s daughter also spoke at the press conference. She was puzzled about how anyone could be capable of such malice.
“I’m watching, and all I kept saying was, ‘Why are you doing this to my mom?’ she told the press. “She’s 93, 5-foot tall, a little 130-pound lady, never been in a fight her whole life.”

    “Horrified. Just horrified,” she added.
The daughter then revealed how they caught the assault on tape. She explained that her family planted the nanny cam in the room back in December to discover why her mother had been suffering bruises. It took a few attempts to catch the abuse.
The camera also caught staff stealing from her mom, who was a patient at the facility for around five years.

She noted her mom has since been transferred to another facility where she is receiving proper treatment.
Arrington has been charged with torture with intent to cause cruel or extreme physical or mental pain and suffering. This carries a sentence of up to life in prison.
She is also charged with vulnerable adult abuse, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder or by strangulation. The latter carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

The Democrats’ anti-business policies create the food deserts they decry

After the Rodney King riots in LA in the early 1990s, news organizations told us endlessly that citizens were angry about the food deserts in minority communities. I remember thinking there might be another reason why there were no stores in the neighborhoods besides the implied racism. Maybe the burned husks of buildings might have something to do with it…(Article by Vince Coyner republished from AmericanThinker.com)
At the time, I was living in Washington, DC, and understood all too well what I was seeing. DC had endured extraordinary riots in 1968, and wide swaths of it still resembled a war zone. Riots have a way of destroying more than just the buildings that go up in flames. They rip the hearts out of a community, something that often takes years or decades to repair.
Riots, however, are just one way a community can be destroyed. Another, far more insidious, is common crime. With riots, everyone can point to the damage and clamor for rebuilding, but with common crime, once the window is replaced or the body chalk is washed away, the neighborhood looks exactly the same as it did before.
But of course, it’s not the same. From citizens being scared to walk down the street to kids having to dodge junkies as they walk to school to upstanding members of the community not visiting certain neighborhoods—and not spending money there—the fear of violence has devastating consequences on any community.
Food deserts are one of those consequences. Retailers typically are not charities. They exist to make money. When violence, security costs, and shoplifting make it so they can’t make money, they usually close. Hence, when all the food stores close, you have said “food deserts.”
The funny thing, however, is that the people who create the conditions that lead to food deserts never take responsibility for them. Democrats have unleashed an unprecedented amount of street violence and crime on Americans, from coast to coast.
A decade ago, California made shoplifting under $950 a misdemeanor, so shoplifting is de facto legal. That basically means that you can steal $949 worth of merchandise every single day and likely never go to jail. So, if you steal that $949 worth of goods every day and sell them for 25 cents on the dollar, you can generate an income of $86,000 a year tax-free! Not bad.
Both Illinois and New York enacted bail reform that makes it far more likely that offenders will end up back on the streets. Since then, we’ve seen exactly that, whether it be for shoplifting or assaulting cops or citizens.
Why all this matters is because the chickens are coming home to roost. Across the country, from San Francisco to Seattle to New York to Boston, stores are closing because of crime.
Some, in an effort to reduce shoplifting and remain open, put literally every single item behind lock and key. (Surprise, it didn’t work.) But rather than recognize that stores are closing because they can’t make a profit due to the extraordinary amounts of crime, Democrats are blaming… you guessed it: Racism. Thus, communist, racist, Democrat (pardon the redundancy) Massachusetts Representative Ayanna Pressley has assailed the fact that CVS is closing another store in a minority community, not because of shoplifting or security or losing money, but because of “racial and economic discrimination.”
But of course, she’s not alone in her unhinged take on stores closing. In the hellhole that has become San Francisco, city supervisors have proposed a bill that would allow citizens to sue retailers if they close without giving the city six months’ notice. That means, basically, that after struggling to make a profit, when a store finally decides to bite the bullet and close its doors, the Democrats running the city will have decreed that the store must remain open for another six months, regardless of how much money it loses.
