Police: 15 Hurt in Miami Nightclub Shooting

    MIAMI — Sep 28, 2014, 10:58 AM ET

Police say 15 people have been hurt in a shooting at a Miami nightclub and that the youngest victim is 11 years old.

Miami police said gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. Sunday at a club called The Spot. Police spokeswoman Frederica Burden says it's unclear how many shooters there were and what caused the shooting. She also says investigators are going from hospital to hospital interviewing witnesses as they sought more details about the situation.

Authorities say one of the victims is in critical condition, but they had no immediate information on the extent of other injuries or the victims.

‘The New Normal’: 15 People Shot, Some as Young as 11 Years Old, in Miami Nightclub Melee

    Sep. 28, 2014

A massive shooting rocked a Miami nightclub early Sunday morning, the Miami Herald reported, leaving 15 people shot — and among the injured were mere children.

    Image via YouTube

As the Herald noted, it’s “not clear” to police why the nightclub, “The Spot,” was packed with children and teenagers, but at least one witness said that the shooting, while “very very bad,” was nothing out of the ordinary.

“You can ride by gunshots anywhere out here anytime,” he told the Herald. ”This is kind of normal, the new normal.”

“Young people now, throughout the United States — Chicago or Miami or LA or wherever you’re at, even in small towns — [young people are] running around with AK-47s and everything,” the witness added.

A police department spokeswoman told the Herald that seven people had been hospitalized, and that the shooting was under investigation.

Fifteen people were shot at an adult nightclub in Liberty City early Sunday morning, according to Miami police. The injured range in age from age 11 to 25.

"At 1 a.m. this morning we received multiple calls for several people who were shot at Northwest 7th Avenue and 64th Street," said Capt. Ignatius Carroll, a spokesman with Miami Fire Rescue. Carrol described the scene as "chaos."

Seven people, including two males and five females ages 12 to 17, were transported from The Spot lounge to Jackson Memorial Hospital's pediatric center, said Carroll. One male was in critical condition, as of early Sunday morning. There was a party inside the club, police said, it is unclear what children and teenagers were doing inside when shots rang out.

"There were a lot of people in there," said a 53-year-old man, who declined to give his name, but was in a nearby lot when the shooting took place and watched from afar. "Groups of people just shooting at each other like they were in Iraq."

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami homicide at 305-603-6350 or CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.

MIAMI (AP) — The manager of a Miami restaurant where 15 people were shot during a teen party over the weekend has been arrested for selling liquor without a license.

Police and city investigators inspected The Spot on Monday and found three bottles of liquor behind the bar. The restaurant is only licensed to sell beer and wine.

Miami police said The Spot was functioning as a club early Sunday morning when a shooting wounded many youngsters, including an 11-year-old girl. Neighbors said the adult club had recently started hosting a teen night that was drawing large crowds.

Police said the restaurant was not authorized to host nightclub events. It's unclear what, if any, type of sanctions The Spot may face.

Restaurant manager Tiffany Johnson didn't respond to a telephone message Tuesday.

A 17-year-old former Jackson High student named Will Campbell was the gunman who sprayed bullets indiscriminately inside a Liberty City teen nightclub, wounding 15 people, Miami police announced Monday.

The teenager was arrested Monday evening for attempted murder and 14 counts of aggravated battery, Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa said.

The shooting sparked outrage in Miami — for the sheer number of victims, and because so many victims were underage, including one as young as 11 years old.

The gunfire happened at 1 a.m. Sept. 28 at The Spot club on Northwest 64th Street and Seventh Avenue.

Witnesses identified Campbell, whose friend had been involved in a fight with other young men at Norland High in North Miami-Dade. When his friend encountered a 15-year-old rival at the club, Campbell pulled a weapon and fired “point blank in the stomach,” Orosa said.

Then as Campbell ran away, he squeezed off a volley of rounds, hitting the other club goers. The teen wounded in the stomach is in critical condition.

Miami homicide detectives, with help from Miami-Dade schools police investigators, had been looking for Campbell since Friday.

“We need to show people you cannot go into an establishment and shoot indiscriminately and get away with it,” Orosa said. “A lot of innocent people were hit by bullets.”

Campbell had been kicked out several schools in recent months, Orosa said.

In recent years, Campbell had gotten in trouble at Central and Jackson high schools for possessing marijuana, fighting, carrying a knife on school grounds and truancy. He had been arrested once, on a charge of resisting with violence, back in May 2013, according to state records.

Campbell will be booked as a juvenile, but will likely be charged as an adult in the coming weeks.

Miami police detectives, who were interviewing Campbell on Monday night, are still looking for the get-away driver and anyone else involved in the crime.

In all, the 15 shot in and outside The Spot ranged in ages from 11 to 25.

The Spot is a licensed restaurant that can seat up to 50 people. It has a beer and wine license, and teens and children are allowed inside.

Police don’t know if juveniles inside the club were buying drinks, but said federal agents are also investigating the incident.

After the shooting, club manager Tiffany Johnson was cited for distributing alcohol with only a beer and wine license, for not having permits for a jukebox and a pool table, and for buying beer at Presidente Supermarket, which isn’t a legal distributor.

The citations, which also came with a recommendation to remove The Spot’s certificate of use, were issued by the Operation Safe Club Task Force, a group composed of city police, code enforcement officers and members of the state alcohol, tobacco and beverage agency.

For at least the past month The Spot has been advertising Saturday evenings as a teen night, hiring local music talent to attract kids.
Also known as The Caribbean Spot, it’s been popular over the years as a hangout for an older crowd that enjoyed island music and fried fish, pigeon peas and cabbage.

Second teen arrested in Liberty City nightclub shooting

MIAMI -A second teenager has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured 15 people at a Miami nightclub.
Jamiroquai Young, 16, was arrested Tuesday as an accessory in the shooting.

His arrest comes a day after Will Campbell was arrested on one count of attempted-first degree murder and 14 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

    Quick Clicks

Campbell, 17, is accused of shooting 15 people during a teen night at The Spot in Liberty City late last month.

His attorney described Campbell as a good student who never missed a day at Miami Jackson High School. He played football and baseball and was involved with the JROTC program.

Campbell's mother spoke briefly with Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela about why she thought her son should be released on bond.

"He's a very intelligent, smart boy," she said. "He's outgoing, outstanding. He's very honest."

Regardless of his clean past, the state argued that because of the seriousness of the charges and because a firearm was used, Campbell should stay behind bars until his next hearing. The judge agreed, saying Campbell is a risk to the community.

The judge will decide whether Campbell will be tried as an adult at his next hearing, scheduled for Oct. 27.

Police said Campbell got into an argument with Trevon Simmons, 15, which led to the shooting. They said he shot at the crowd while running away, injuring 14 others.

Simmons is the only victim who remains hospitalized. He is listed in critical condition.
