President Trump says he's working with China to save ZTE

President Trump says he's working with China to save ZTE

by Jackie Wattles and Sherisse Pham
    May 13, 2018: 2:03 PM ET

President Donald Trump said in a tweet Sunday that he's working to give ZTE "a way to get back into business, fast."

ZTE, a smartphone and telecom equipment maker that does business around the world, announced last week that it has halted its main operations after the Trump administration banned American companies from selling it vital components.

Now, Trump says he's working with President Xi Jinping of China to get the company back on its feet.

"Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!" Trump wrote in a tweet Sunday. The US Commerce Department did not immediately respond to multiple requests for comment Sunday.

ZTE's current struggles have made it the most visible consequence thus far of a brewing trade war between the United States and China.

The Chinese company employs about 75,000 people. It's also the fourth largest provider of smartphones in the United States.

Last month, the Trump administration blocked American firms from selling parts or providing services to ZTE until 2025. The ban was put in place after Washington said ZTE violated a deal struck last year in which ZTE agreed to pay a $1.2 billion fine for violating US sanctions on Iran and North Korea.

ZTE denies it violated the deal and is appealing the export ban. The company warned in April, when the ban was first implemented, that it would "severely impact the survival and development" of ZTE. Experts have since said the company could be circling the drain.

The US crackdown on ZTE has been interpreted by some as part of a broader push by the United States to stifle China's tech ambition.

But ZTE has also long been the target of scrutiny for regulators and officials in the United States, which is wary of its ties to the Chinese government. The company's controlling shareholder is Shenzhen Zhongxingxin Telecommunications Equipment, a Chinese state-owned corporation.

One 2012 congressional report about ZTE and Huawei, another huge Chinese tech company, said the companies "cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence and thus pose a security threat to the United States and to our systems."

Adam Schiff, a Democratic congressman from California, responded to Trump's tweet Sunday, saying he "should care more about our national security than Chinese jobs."

"Our intelligence agencies have warned that ZTE technology and phones pose a major cyber security threat," he said.

    — CNN's Julia Horowitz contributed to this report.

Trump offers reassurance over China trade: 'Be cool'

President Trump on Sunday said the United States and China have a positive trade relationship despite previous unfair trade deals, adding that any issues “will all work out.”

“China and the United States are working well together on trade, but past negotiations have been so one sided in favor of China, for so many years, that it is hard for them to make a deal that benefits both countries,” the president wrote on Twitter. “But be cool, it will all work out!”

Trump earlier in the day said he is helping China’s President, Xi Jinping, put telecommunications maker ZTE “back into business."

“Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!” the president said Sunday morning.

The Commerce Department last month prohibited U.S. companies from selling to ZTE, claiming the telecommunications firm violated American sanctions.

Trump has railed against China for its trade practices, but has also insisted that he and Xi have a positive relationship.

“President Xi and I will always be friends, no matter what happens with our dispute on trade. China will take down its Trade Barriers because it is the right thing to do,” Trump said last month as both China and the United States threatened to enact tariffs on each other.

“Taxes will become Reciprocal & a deal will be made on Intellectual Property. Great future for both countries!” the president added at the time.

    China our "friend"???

Friends do NOT rip each other off.

Another misconception that all these countries are our "friends"! LOL

Mexico, Central America, France, Germany, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea...they are not our "friends".

They are business associates. And many of them have their hands out for our money and have taken advantage of us due to past administrations that have NO clue how to negotiate or make deals.

This is going to get really interesting with China. We have riffs over trade deficits, intellectual property theft, tariffs, sanctions, currency manipulation, cyber-security, illegal narcotics shipments, visa travel violations, Taiwan, South China Sea, and North Korea to name a few. Trump intends to win on all of these. Hope he can, and hope he does.

I hate to ever admit agreeing with anything Adam Schiff says. But on this one, I do!
As long as they are expanding their military power around the world, we must not give them any technology which might help them.

Trump isn't giving them any technology, they already have the technology. Our companies gave it to them in order to do business in China years ago. Trump is going to get it back or shut 'em down. Don't fall for anything idiots like Schiff and Schumer say. They're the ones who created this catastrophe to begin with, Trump is the one fixing it.

NOT WHAT I HEARD! They have the ability to implant spy technology in the devices they manufacture for us. That one third of such devices are made by them is scary. We would have to test each individual device imported from them to make sure they didn't add such technology.

Since their government controls the company, it is a potential Trojan horse. We need to be wiser than falling for that.

That's because MORONS like Schiff and Schumer let them do it years ago!! Our companies didn't move to China under Trump and create this incessuous relationship with the Communist Regime forming businesses with them which entitles them to the technologies of the companies they own half of. US companies with the full consent of the US Congress and former Presidents did that, not Trump. Trump has shut them down and he's going to let them get back in business if they give up the technologies and end these horrible requirements that to invest in China you have to do business with the government as an equal partner. Trump is fixing the problem others like Schiff and Schumer and the rest of this stupid Swamp, caused. You'll see!! Like Trump said "Be cool!" Schiff is a Tokyo Rose.

Importing this foreign labor into our technology and internet companies is a Trojan Horse too.

Hope it hits Zuckerburg and Silicon Valley in the pocketbook. Matter of time before these people from India and these foreigners hack their systems.

The question is how we handle it now. Just because there are many people employed by a criminal cartel doesn't mean we should let that cartel continue it's corrupt business.
