Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) suggested Thursday that Americans need to have more babies or risk a collapse of popular entitlements like Medicare and Social Security.

“This is going to be the new economic challenge for America: people. Baby boomers are retiring -- I did my part, but we need to have higher birth rates in this country,” Ryan told reporters as he riffed on how Republicans will tackle entitlement and welfare reform in 2018. “Baby boomers are retiring and we have fewer people following them in the workforce.

”We have something like a 90-percent increase in the retirement population of America but only a 19-percent increase in the working population in American,” he continued. “So what do we have to do? Be smarter, more efficient, more technology … still gonna need more people.”

In 2016, the United States saw a record low fertility rate. There were 62 births for every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44, down about 1 percent from a year earlier, according to the New York Times.

Republicans like Ryan believe Americans need to have more children to replace the millions of baby boomers who are retiring or passing away. Democrats are more open to seeing many in the baby-boomer generation replaced through immigration to offset the low birth rate.

In addition to boosting the U.S. birth rate, Ryan argued that Congress needs to help those relying on welfare to get back into the workforce.

“And when we have tens of millions of people right here in this country falling short of their potential, not working, not looking for a job, or not in school getting a skill to get a job, that’s a problem,” Ryan said.

Stop employers from handing our jobs to illegal aliens who do not contribute in taxes and stop
handing out billions of dollars in welfare payments and benefits to illegal aliens and
the government coffers will start to replenish itself.

I have been hearing this argument for years. I guess he doesn't count all the illegal anchor babies and their families who are getting foodstamps and all the other benefits they get courtesy of the American taxpayers. He must really think we are stupid. I heard he was retiring. We should be so lucky. They are probably finding out all the underhanded things he has been doing to undermine Trump's agenda.

If you corrupt politicians would stop STEALING from our SS and benefits and stop taking OUR tax dollars and FORCING us to pay for foreign aid, refugees, illegal aliens, TPS and asylum liars and more WARS...WE would have more money in OUR pockets to have more children and better quality of life.

We are not going to breed like rats and have 10 kids and live in a mud puddle!

No, you do not need to breed more retirees, if and when SS and Medicare runs out of money, you simply raise the payroll tax. SS tax has not been raised in 27 years (1990), the Medicare tax has not been raised in 31 years (1987). These taxes have been raised routinely throughout our history to keep up with the costs of the program to meet its objectives. The notion that younger people pay the taxes to fund those retiring is an ass-backwards philosophy. The trust fund is what it is, because of how many taxes retirees have paid into it. This is their money going back to them. Younger people are contributing to pay for their themselves when they reach that age. The key to its success is adequate payroll taxes to cover the costs and higher wages to which the tax rate is applied.

It's not SS and Medicare bankrupting our government, it's poverty programs from massive immigration and free trade treason, not our retirement program.

Cut off ALL foreign aid and pay our Social Security money back!

I'm not a proponent of making more babies. Personally, I think our country and the world is quickly becoming overpopulated. What is the limit to the worlds carrying capacity? Interestingly though, there have been 57,762,169 Abortions in America Since Roe vs. Wade in 1973.

We're way beyond the world's carrying capacity. The United States is beyond our own carrying capacity which is why we have 75 million people on Medicaid, 50 million on food stamps, millions of homeless people, working poor requiring tax credit welfare, and $20 trillion in debt paying for it. We aren't in debt because of good roads, nice airports and a good defense system, we're in debt because of the government cost of supporting people who can't sustain themselves because the number of people in our country far exceed the number of jobs and wages and benefits needed for them to support themselves. But for Roe v Wade, by now we would have at least another 125 million people in our country.
