September 11, 2001, was one of the most tragic days in American history. As the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, which took nearly 3,000 lives, approaches, President Barack Obama hopes to bring something positive out of the tragedy.

In April, Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which federally authorizes 9/11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Among those who died that day were five Darien men. The town will be remembering them during a morning ceremony that Friday.

[b]A not-for-profit organization called MyGoodDeed.org worked for the past seven years to get such legislation passed. David Paine, founder and president of the organization, previously said: “There isn’t a better or more fitting way to remember 9/11 than for all of us, as Americans, to voluntarily set aside time on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks to help others in need.â€
