Texas' election chief apologizes over flawed noncitizen list

Texas' election chief apologizes over flawed noncitizen list

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas' election chief has apologized for releasing a botched list of 95,000 voters whose citizenship was called into question before being fully vetted.

Texas Secretary of State David Whitley previously refused to acknowledge mistakes in the three weeks since his office gave prosecutors a voter list that included tens of thousands of U.S. citizens who were wrongly flagged.

But in a letter to lawmakers Wednesday, Whitley said "more time should have been devoted" to vetting the names. President Donald Trump seized on the reports out of Texas to renew unsubstantiated claims of rampant voter fraud.

The letter comes as Whitley's nomination is in jeopardy. He was appointed by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott but is still awaiting Senate confirmation.

The letter was first reported by the Texas Tribune.

Texas' election chief resigns after voter citizenship flub

May 27, 2019 3:49 PM in News - AP Texas Headlines
By PAUL J. WEBER and CLARICE SIBLER
    Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The embattled Texas elections chief who questioned the U.S. citizenship of nearly 100,000 voters has resigned ahead of being forced out of office.

Local media outlets report Secretary of State David Whitley submitted his resignation letter Monday. He did so just before the Texas Legislature was set to adjourn without taking the confirmation note Whitley needed to keep his job.

Democrats blocked a vote on Whitley after his office used flawed data in a bungled scouring of voter rolls. President Donald Trump used the information Whitley's office provided to renew his unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.

U.S District Judge Fred Biery called Texas' search for non-citizen voters "a solution looking for a problem."

Republicans never forced vote on Whitley, sidestepping partisan battles ahead of a potential fight for their GOP majority in 2020.
