As U.S. oil exports reportedly double, Steve Scalise says he told you so

U.S. oil exports doubled in some months this year compared with 2016, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday (June 7). That led U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, the House majority whip, to re-promote his 2015 crusade to lift the 40-year-old ban on crude oil exports.

"American oil exports are emerging as a disruptive new force in global markets. The U.S. exported 1 million barrels of oil a day during some months so far this year -- double the pace of 2016 -- and is on track to average that amount for all of 2017," The Journal said in a subscription-only story, citing its own analysis of data from the U.S. Energy Department and the International Trade Commission.

Scalise's office responded with excerpts about his successful crusade from a NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune editorial, the Baton Rouge Business Report, WWL television and WRNO radio.

His interest in the industry is obvious:

• Scalise is a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee
• Oil and gas interests were his top campaign contributors in 2015-16, according to the Center for Responsive Politics
• A 2014 report by LSU economist Loren Scott, the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association and Grow Louisiana Coalition said oil and gas was responsible for 64,669 direct jobs (287,000 including related work), $20.5 billion in household earnings and almost $74 billion in sales to Louisiana companies in 2011.
