UK Releases Video Of 17 "Hostile" Russian Jets Buzzing Warship Near Crimea

As Tensions Surge, UK Releases Video Of 17 "Hostile" Russian Jets Buzzing Warship Near Crimea

In a show of "brazen hostility," 17 Russian fighter jets 'buzzed' Britain's Royal Navy warship, HMS Duncan, in the Black Sea near Crimea.

Stunning footage of the event was broadcast on a UK Channel 5 documentary following the operations of the Type 45 destroyer in the volatile region.

Dramatic moment 17 Russian fighter jets swarm around a Royal Navy warship...

Defense secretary Gavin Williamson praised the actions of the crew aboard HMS Duncan in the face of Russian aggression. Williamson said:
"Over the past year, HMS Duncan and her crew have embodied the key role the UK plays in NATO.
"As NATO flagship, she has faced down brazen Russian hostility in the Black Sea with jets buzzing overhead, been stalked by Russian spy ships and played a vital role protecting NATO allies during the British, American and French strikes against Syrian chemical weapons facilities.
"Through her deployment, this world-leading ship and her crew epitomised the nation we are going to be as we exit the EU – a truly global Britain which is outward-looking and engaged on the world stage."

Royal Navy commodore Mike Utley said the incident involving HMS Duncan shows the challenges posed by Russian military activity. He said:
"HMS Duncan is probably the only maritime asset that has seen a raid of that magnitude in the last 25 years."
"I think their tactics are naive. What they don't know is how capable the ship is.
"When you see that much activity, I think it reinforces the nature of what people expect at the moment and why there is a challenge from Russia."
The footage shows the jets circling the ship before returning to Russian airspace with one of the pilots sending a message to Duncan's crew, saying: "Good luck, guys."
The documentary shows one of Duncan's sailors saying they felt the message could have been a warning to the ship while another said:
"They had 17 aircraft, we have 48 missiles - I think we're going to win that one."
And while the headlines around this "hostile" act are sure to raise already extremely high tensions between Ukraine and Russia, pointing to Russia as the "aggressor" in an effort to solidify public opinion (in NATO) against Putin, the dramatic video is from May of this year.

Ukraine Deploys Reservists To 10 Border Provinces As President Warns Of "Russian Invasion"

Galvanizing support by warning about an imminent Russian invasion, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko managed to win approval from the Ukrainian Parliament in a midnight vote on Monday following five hours of contentious debate.
Unwilling to simply accept Poroshenko's claims that he had heard reliable whispers about an imminent Russian invasion, opposition figures pressed Poroshenko on his reasoning for the emergency measures, and ultimately succeeded in forcing him to water down the proposal. But even before Poroshenko's decree won the approval of lawmakers, the Ukrainian president had already started deploying troops into the streets of his country.
Now in a state of martial law, Ukraine has called up its reservists and deployed all available troops to join the mobilization. Initially expected to last for two months, Poroshenko revised his degree to avoid accusations that he would try to interfere in the upcoming Ukrainian election. The decree passed by the Rada will leave martial law in effect for 30 days. The country has also started restricting travel for Russian nationals. NATO Commander Jens Stoltenberg told the Associated Press that Poroshenko had given his word that the order wouldn't interfere with the upcoming vote.

The conflict between the Ukraine and Russia exploded into life on Sunday when Russian ships fired on two Ukrainian artillery ships and rammed a tugboat as the ships traveled toward the Kerch Strait, which connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. Russia's mighty Black Sea fleet has taken the three ships and their crew into custody, and has so far ignored calls to release the soldiers by the UN, European leaders and Poroshenko himself.
US officials criticized Russia for its "aggressive" defense of the Kerch Strait, which Ukraine has a right to use according to a bilateral treaty. After Nikki Haley said during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council that Russia was making it "impossible" to have normal relations with the US, Mike Pompeo said Russia's "aggressive action" was a "dangerous escalation" and also "violates international law." He also advocated for Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in direct talks.

    Video at the page link

Russia says the ships disobeyed orders to halt, and that Ukraine had failed to notify Russia of the ships' advance. Ukraine claims that it did notify Russia, and that the incident is the result of "growing Russian aggression." Six Ukrainian crewmen were injured in the Russian attack, which was the first act of violence between the two nations since the annexation of Crimea.
Chief diplomats from both countries traded accusations of provocations and "deliberate hostility."
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin tweeted that the dispute was not an accident and that Russia had engaged in "deliberately planned hostilities," while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blamed Kiev for what he described as a "provocation," adding that "Ukraine had undoubtedly hoped to get additional benefits from the situation, expecting the U.S. and Europe to blindly take the provocateurs’ side."
Poroshenko said the martial law was necessary because Ukraine was facing nothing short of a all-out ground invasion.
Poroshenko said it was necessary because of intelligence about "a highly serious threat of a ground operation against Ukraine." He did not elaborate.
"Martial law doesn’t mean declaring a war," he said. "It is introduced with the sole purpose of boosting Ukraine’s defense in the light of a growing aggression from Russia."
But the president's plans to impose martial law throughout the country were rebuffed as the opposition forced a compromise where troops will only be deployed in 10 border provinces. These provinces share borders with Russia, Belarus and the Trans-Dniester, a pro-Moscow breakaway region of Moldova.
Still, many remained skeptical. Opposition figures, including former President Yulia Tymoshenko pointed out that the order would give soldiers broad latitude to do pretty much whatever they want. Furthermore, Ukraine never called for martial law during the insurgency in the east that erupted back in 2014, eventually leading to an armed conflict that killed more than 10,000.
The approved measures included a partial mobilization and strengthening of air defenses. It also contained vaguely worded steps such as "strengthening" anti-terrorism measures and "information security" that could curtail certain rights and freedoms.
But Poroshenko also pledged to respect the rights of Ukrainian citizens.
    [...]
Despite Poroshenko’s vow to respect individual rights, opposition lawmaker and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko warned before the vote that his proposal would lead to the possible illegal searches, invasion of privacy and curtailing of free speech.
"This means they will be breaking into the houses of Ukrainians and not those of the aggressor nation," noted Tymoshenko, who is leading in various opinion polls. "They will be prying into personal mail, family affairs ... In fact, everything that is written here is a destruction of the lives of Ukrainians."
Poroshenko’s call also outraged far-right groups in Ukraine that have advocated severing diplomatic ties with Russia. Hundreds of protesters from the National Corps party waved flares in the snowy streets of Kiev outside parliament and accused the president of using martial law to his own ends.
But Poroshenko insisted it was necessary because what happened in the Kerch Strait between Crimea and the Russian mainland "was no accident," adding that "this was not the culmination of it yet."
His critics reacted to his call for martial law with suspicion, wondering why Sunday’s incident merited such a response. With his approval ratings in free fall following a series of corruption scandals, Poroshenko's enemies worry that the incident may have been stage-managed to give the president an excuse to crack down on dissent and free movement ahead of the vote.

Ukraine Declares Martial Law As Russia Refuses To Release Captured Ships

Update 2: Ambassador Nikki Haley had some choice words for Russia during Monday's emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, blasting Russia's decision to detain three Ukrainian ships as "arrogant" and accusing Russia of making normal relations with the US "impossible." She also accused Russia of violating Ukraine's "sovereign territory" with its annexation of Crimea.

Update 1: Poroshenko's plan to impose martial law has been approved, and during an address on national television, the president said it will begin at 9 am local time on Nov. 28 and continue at least until late January. Ukrainians are expected to vote in a presidential election in March.

    * * *
Seemingly out of nowhere, a diplomatic crisis has erupted between Ukraine and Russia after Russia detained three Ukrainian ships which it said had been "maneuvering dangerously" near the Kerch Strait - a crucial Russia-controlled choke point which separates the Sea of Azov From the Black Sea. In response to what he decried as unprovoked Russian aggression, increasingly unpopular Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a declaration on Monday to declare martial law for 60 days through Jan. 26. He also started mobilizing the Ukrainian army despite the martial law order still needing approval by the country's Parliament, according to RT.

Ratcheting up the anxieties of NATO commanders, who are probably fearful of being drawn into a potential military conflict with Russia, Ukraine has put its troops on full combat alert (though it isn't a member of NATO, Ukraine has become closely allied with the defense alliance after shelving plans for membership a decade ago). Poroshenko met with the country's military leaders Sunday night to discuss imposing martial law.
As the UN calls an emergency meeting of the Security Council (of which Russia is a permanent member) to be held on Monday, Russia is resisting international demands to release the two Ukrainian artillery boats and the tugboat, which it seized after firing on the ships and ramming one of them. A spokeswoman for the Kremlin said Russia is opening a criminal case into what it claimed was the ships' illegal entry into Russian waters surrounding the narrow Kerch Strait, according to Reuters.
Russian newswire Interfax reported that Russian border guards had detained 24 Ukrainian sailors accused of taking part in the border provocations.

Kiev has maintained that Russia was notified ahead of time that the ships were approaching the strait, and denied its ships had done anything wrong. Russia says the ships disobeyed orders to halt.
Moscow has accused Ukraine of staging the armed provocation, presumably to allow Poroshenko to impose martial law and possibly delay a March election that the president, who is reeling from corruption scandals and failed economic policies, is widely expected to lose.
Fortunately for Ukraine, declaring martial law won't jeopardize its $1 billion IMF bailout.
"The Fund has no formal legal prohibitions that prevent continued cooperation in such conditions," a source close to the fund reportedly told UNIAN.
A bilateral treaty allows both Russia and Ukraine to use the Sea of Azov, access to which is tightly controlled by Russia, which built a land bridge over the Kerch Strait, the only egress from the sea, after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Ukraine is still bitter over the annexation, and has accused Russia of supporting a pro-Russian insurgency in the country's east. After briefly closing the strait following the incident, Russia has again opened it to traffic. Meanwhile, Russian security agency the FSB has said three Ukrainian sailors had been wounded when Russian ships fired on and rammed their Ukrainian counterparts, though none of these injuries were said to be life threatening. Men dressed in Russian navy uniforms could be seen guarding the ships on Monday as they were being held at a Russian port near Crimea, not far from where Russia's mighty Black Sea fleet is stationed.
Regardless of what happens, the incident could provoke more western sanctions against Russia, which will only further dampen relations between Russia and the West at a time when Russia is building its own financial infrastructure to challenge the dollar-dominated global trade system.
And while European officials have urged both sides to exercise restraint, the incident shows just how easily Russia and the West could be drawn into a military conflict over Ukraine. While it appears a shooting war has been averted - for now, at least - the mobilization of Ukrainian troops on its border with Russia certainly doesn't bode well for peace. The incident has sent the Russian ruble sliding against the dollar, as the sanction fears join concerns about the recent dramatic slump in global oil prices.
That would be quite an escalation for an incident that began with the ramming of a tugboat.

Russia Jails Two Ukrainian Sailors Involved In Kerch Strait Confrontation

A Russian court in Simferopol ruled that the men should be kept in custody for two months while Russia carries out an investigation...

Ignoring Ukraine's demands that its sailors be treated as prisoners of war, Russia has decided to jail two of the Ukrainian sailors captured on Sunday when Russian Navy ships rammed and fired on three Ukrainian vessels that Moscow said were "maneuvering dangerously" near the Kerch Strait. The Russian Coast Guard captured some two dozen sailors after commandeering the ships, which included to Ukrainian artillery ships and a tugboat. Russia has refused to release the ships and the sailors despite demands from European and US officials.
According to Radio Free Europe, a Russian court in Simferopol ruled that the men should be kept in custody for two months while Russia carries out an investigation. News of the court's decision follows the release of interrogation footage where three of the sailors admitted to "provoking" Russia and said they were just following orders. In Russia "pretrial detention" typically means that the men will be locked behind bars in a jail.

The court would also carry out custody hearings for 12 other captured sailors on Tuesday, with nine more expected on Wednesday.
Russian law allows for the term of their detention to be extended at prosecutors' request. It's not clear when the sailors, who have been accused of violating Russia's border, will face trial.
Six Ukrainians were injured on Sunday when Russian ships fired on the Ukrainian vessels, while a Russian shipped rammed the tugboat. After the ships were halted, Russian special forces stormed the vessels and took them into custody.

Following comments from the leader of the British army who claimed that Russia represents a greater security risk to the UK than ISIS, a British diplomat accused Russia of trying to cement its domination of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, by expanding its dominance to the Sea of Azov.
Britain's Deputy UN Ambassador Jonathan Allen said Russia "wants to consolidate its illegal annexation of Crimea and annex the Sea of Azov," where Ukraine has several ports.
The international community will not accept this, he said, insisting that Russia “must not be allowed to rewrite history by establishing new realities on the ground."
During a phone call with German leader Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed concerns about Ukraine's decision to declare martial law in ten border regions, saying it could lead to "the threat of escalation" - which, ironically, is exactly what Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said to justify it. As Ukraine deploys reservists to the border provinces affected by the order, opposition politicians have questioned why martial law is needed now, and not during the worst of the fighting in Eastern Ukraine during the insurgency that flared in 2014 and 2015. Still, Poroshenko's warnings of an imminent Russian invasion helped win support for the measure in the country's parliament.
"The imposition of martial law in various regions potentially could lead to the threat of an escalation of tension in the conflict region, in the southeast" of Ukraine, Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, later told reporters.
Russia's decision to jail the sailors will likely inflame the diplomatic crisis that erupted following Sunday's confrontation. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Putin and Poroshenko should meet to resolve the dispute amicably. But given the developments over the past day, that doesn't look likely.

    (Courtesy of Radio Free Europe)
Though NATO has said it will back Ukraine no matter what, the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday urged Russia and Ukraine to exercise "maximum restraint" to avoid further escalation. As fears of a hot war run high, the deeply unpopular Poroshenko is running to keep his seat in a March election that he is widely expected to lose. Will his stand against Russia be enough to revive his sagging popularity? Or will the Ukrainian leader need to resort to more drastic measures to convince the Ukrainian people to fall in line behind their leader during a period of crisis?

Ukraine: ‘Full-scale war’ with Russia possible as both nations mobilize troops to their borders

    November 28, 2018 Laura Widener

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine in the Kerch Strait could possibly lead the two nations to war.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that the latest conflict over the weekend has escalated tensions and heightened the risk for “full-scale war” with Russia, Newsweek reported Tuesday.
“I don’t want anyone to think this is fun and games. Ukraine is under threat of full-scale war with Russia,” Poroshenko said Tuesday.

He added that Ukrainian troops have been activated in preparation for a potential “large-scale ground invasion.” He noted that “evidence collected by our intelligence” has demonstrated “serious grounds to believe Russia is ready to follow with a ground attack.”
Russia has deployed its own troops near the Ukrainian border, escalating already high tensions.
Ukrainian Parliament approved a measure to implement martial law in several provinces effective Wednesday morning and lasting for 30 days. Additionally, Poroshenko has said that Russia’s travel to Ukraine will be limited.
“One of the proposals to our chief of general staff and the chief of the border control is that (there) would be some limits for Russians to enter to Ukraine during this special period,” Poroshenko said, according to CNN.
On Sunday, Russia decided to block Ukraine’s passage in the Kerch Strait, a waterway frequently used by both countries.
Russia rammed a Ukrainian Navy tugboat, fired on two other Ukrainian naval boats, and seized all three – including 23 sailors.
Earlier in the day, Russia also scrambled two jets to monitor Ukraine’s naval activity.
Crimea has ordered a two-month detention for 12 of the Ukrainian sailors while they await their Jan. 25, 2019 trial for charges of trespassing into Russia territory.
Video footage released by Russian Federal Security Service shows a Ukrainian sailor confessing to the act of provoking Russian ships. However, his confession is suspected to be carried out under duress.
Russia issued a statement on Tuesday blaming Ukraine for “deliberately ignor[ing] the rules of peaceful passage in the territorial sea of the Russian Federation.”
“It is emphasized that the Ukrainian leadership bears full responsibility for the creation of another conflict situation and the associated risks. All this is clearly undertaken in view of the election campaign in Ukraine,” the statement added.

The United States swiftly condemned Russia’s actions and pledged support to Ukraine.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley spoke at an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting on Monday, during which she said the conflict on Sunday was “yet another reckless Russian escalation” and called on equal condemnation from partner countries.
“Impeding Ukraine’s lawful transit through the Kerch Strait is a violation under international law. It is an arrogant act that the international community must condemn and will never accept,” she said.

US Defense Contractor Posts Job Offering For "Classified Contingency Operations" In Ukraine

"...to support classified Contingency Operations in support of the U.S. Military in Ukraine" — LinkedIn job posting

    Sat, 12/01/2018 - 22:45
    658 SHARES

The geopolitical analysis site SouthFront has unearthed from the pages of LinkedIn an incredible public job offering by a US defense contractor which reveals potentially sensitive information. The job posting mentions "classified Contingency Operations" in Ukraine and was posted a mere 15 days ago just prior to last Sunday's incident between the Russian and Ukrainian navies in the Kerch Strait.
Writes SouthFront, the US-based defense contractor company "Mission Essential" accidentally revealed a US military specialist deployment in the combat zones in Ukraine via a Job Advertisement on LinkedIn.
Crucially, it's yet further evidence which disproves the years-long claims by Washington that the United States is not directly involved militarily in the Ukraine conflict. The public posting suggests US special forces operations are indeed active and ongoing as tensions with Russia soar.

Screenshot provided should the advert time out or is “accidentally” taken down. Here is the link for the original job posting.
    * * *
Similar to the Atlantic Council’s latest report on the independence of Eastern European countries, as well as the meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, the posting came just days before the escalation in the Sea of Azov.
"Mission Essential" is a government contractor based in the Washington D.C. suburb of Herndon, VA primarily serving intelligence and military clients, and is also considered a leading provider of translation and interpretation services for the US government.
The preemptive job advert was posted on November 16th and seeks:
...linguist candidates who speak Ukrainian to provide foreign language interpretation and translation services to support classified Contingency Operations in support of the U.S. Military in Ukraine.
The formal place of work is Mykolayiv, Ukraine. The port city is also significant, because that is where the US “logistical” naval facility is currently under construction.

The advert also requires candidates to be able to fit in the local culture and customs, in addition to “the ability to deal inconspicuously with local populace if necessary.” Which simply means that the interpreter needs to be able to hide the fact that he is not a Ukrainian citizen, at least partly.
Unsurprisingly, the individual needs to be able to serve in a combat zone “if necessary,” in addition to being able to “live, work, and travel in harsh environments, to include living and working in temporary facilities as mission dictates.”

From the Virginia-based defense contractor's website.
Considering repeated claims by the US leadership that Washington is not involved in the Ukraine conflict, the vacancy posting is an operational security failure by Mission Essential. Most other vacancies posted by the company are for analysts and various linguistical and project management positions, almost predominantly in different military facilities in the US.
It is quite possible that these specialists would assist US military personnel deployed in or near the “combat zones” in Ukraine – i.e. Eastern Ukraine, and as it was expected since as early as November 16th – the Sea of Azov.
This is another piece that reinforces the notion that the “provocation by Russia” in the Sea of Azov could somehow have been premeditated.
However, it also appears that, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s plans have appeared to, at least partially, backfire. “Partially,” because he managed to institute martial law and make another step in his attempts to postpone elections in 2019, thus “democratically” holding on to power and not allowing the Ukrainian citizens to vote and most likely elect his rival and favored presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko.
