I went to the Veterans Day parade today in San Francisco. Only a couple of dozen Iraq or Afghanistan vets marched in the parade, none from the Vietnam conflict as far as I could tell.
I watched from approximately three blocks before the reviewing stand, expecting to be one of many who supported our vets with applause. Well, there were very few spectators. One marcher gave me a small American flag, after I identified myself as "63-65," and the marchers did seem to appreciate my applause.
After the last marchers had passed, I rode my bike to the reviewing stand. There was almost nobody in the area. Few spectators and, as far as I could tell, the marchers just left the area after passing the reviewing stand. It seemed to me that very few people in San Francisco actually care about our vets, and I suspect that this caused them to just leave as soon as they could.
