Grand Teton's Lake DROPS To 12% — Lost HALF Its Water In 12 Days ...

    Summary

Jackson Lake, the reservoir at the foot of the Teton Range in Grand Teton National Park, held 101,622 acre-feet on September 13, 2026, 12% of capacity, after losing half its water in twelve days and 83% in a year. Colter Bay Marina closed on July 13, two months early; Signal Mountain's ramp and marina closed on September 12; Leeks is the last ramp in the water. This video is about who owns the water in a national park lake, how fast it is leaving, and where the Bureau of Reclamation says it will be by the end of fall.

Jackson Lake Dam, completed in 1916 and rebuilt for earthquake safety in 1986–1989, raised a natural glacial lake by 39 feet to store 847,000 acre-feet for the Bureau of Reclamation's Minidoka Project in Idaho. USBR Hydromet station JCK recorded 601,904 acre-feet on September 13, 2025, 206,747 on September 1, 2026 and 101,622 on September 13, 2026, with releases running about 5,000 cubic feet per second. The modern record low is 57,400 acre-feet on September 30, 1988; the 2004 season low was 77,955. Idaho's April 1 snowpack was the lowest on record. Wyoming Game and Fish issued its first voluntary afternoon catch-and-release closure on the Snake River on July 29. Downstream, Palisades held 128,590 acre-feet and American Falls 55,906 on September 13. Grand Teton National Park recorded 3.8 million recreation visits in 2025.

    IN THIS VIDEO
    • The gauge readings for September 1, 12 and 13, and the daily loss rate behind them
    • Who paid for the dam, who holds the top 39 feet, and what Wyoming controls
    • The ramp elevations at Colter Bay, Signal Mountain and Leeks, and the day the gauge crossed each one
    • The month-by-month timeline from a record-low snowpack to a first-ever fishing closure
    • What Reclamation's own end-of-fall range means against the record set in 1988
    • The two dates the current rate points to, and why the script calls them arithmetic, not forecast
    • The reservoirs below Jackson Lake, and what the Upper Snake system is projected to finish the year at

This is a developing situation. Storage figures are USBR Hydromet daily values at publication and the lake is falling about 5,000 acre-feet a day; record-crossing dates in the video are arithmetic on those values, not an agency forecast.
