Canyon Lake, the reservoir on the Salt River an hour east of Phoenix, closed to the public on September 8, 2026 and will be lowered by 54 feet starting September 16, in a planned 16-week dam-inspection drawdown that runs until at least the end of February 2027. The Salt River Project's reservoir system is 48% full. Canyon Lake sits behind Mormon Flat Dam, a 224-foot concrete thin-arch dam completed in the 1920s, owned by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and operated by the Salt River Project (SRP). The drawdown, announced September 17, 2025, covers normally submerged portions of Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams and the river channel below Horse Mesa; SRP says it lowers the lake for these inspections once every 20 years, most recently in 2007 and 1987.

The Tonto National Forest closure covers all boat ramps and access points; State Route 88 (the Apache Trail) stays open. The Dolly Steamboat suspended operations August 30; Canyon Lake Marina is relocating slips. SRP's daily water report puts the total system at 48%, Roosevelt Lake at 35% and Canyon Lake at 97%. On August 21, 2026 the Department of the Interior finalized 2027–2028 Colorado River operations, cutting Arizona's supply by 760,000 acre-feet a year.

About 300 miles off the Oregon coast, a mile beneath the surface of the Pacific, an underwater volcano is slowly inflating as magma collects beneath it. Scientists monitoring the seamount say the swelling signals that another eruption is approaching, though the timeline has shifted more than once as the volcano’s behavior defied earlier forecasts. The mountain poses no threat to people, but it has become one of the best natural laboratories on the planet for learning to predict eruptions before they happen.

A volcano wired for observation
The seamount is the most active submarine volcano in the northeastern Pacific, having erupted in 1998, 2011, and 2015. What sets it apart is not its frequency but its instrumentation. It is the first underwater volcano to sit atop a permanent observatory, a network of seafloor sensors that stream data to shore in real time. That cabled system lets researchers watch the mountain breathe, tracking the gradual rise and fall of the seafloor as magma enters and drains from the chamber below.

Because the volcano inflates like a balloon before it erupts, scientists can measure how much the ground has swelled and compare it to the level reached before past eruptions. Researchers at Oregon State University and partner institutions have used that inflation record to attempt something rarely possible with volcanoes on land: forecasting an eruption years in advance based on a repeatable physical pattern.

A forecast that keeps moving
In late 2024, scientists reported that the seamount was nearing the amount of swelling it had shown before its 2015 eruption, and they suggested it could erupt within about a year. That prediction did not hold. Through the first months of 2025 the rate of inflation slowed, and by spring the volcano had not reached the critical threshold. Researchers revised the outlook, concluding that the mountain would take longer than expected to build back the pressure needed to breach the surface.

The current expectation, as reported in coverage citing the monitoring team, is that an eruption is unlikely before mid-to-late 2026, with the exact timing dependent on how quickly the inflation resumes. That moving target is not a failure of the science so much as a lesson in it. As detailed in reporting by Live Science, the volcano’s rate of magma supply is not perfectly steady, so a forecast built on reaching a fixed swelling level must slide whenever that supply slows.
