Hardtack: A Great, Cheap Addition to Your Survival Gear

Posted on April 13th, 2010 by admin in Food and Cooking
    by Leon Pantenburg

Looking for a way to use up surplus flour, or make a cheap trail food or durable survival ration? One answer may be hardtack, a baked, unleavened wheat cracker. As a survival food, hardtack has a proven track record.

    A sit-down dinner was usually a luxury!

Vicksburg, MS: My gray-clad brothers-in-arms and I hunkered down to eat. In the morning, we would do battle with those “heathen Yankee horde” Civil War re-enactors at Champions Hill, between Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi.

I was “under cover” on assignment for the Vicksburg Post to photograph the battle, one of the biggest re-enactments of the year. Except for the Nikon safely hidden in my haversack, my gear, weapons and accouterments were authentic in every way.

Since I was working for the Post, I had to represent the home team and be a Confederate. (This probably caused a minor earth tremor in Ruthven, Iowa, as my great-great-grandfather, James Hallowell, 92th Illinois Infantry, rolled in his grave!)

My only excuse was that like most Confederate soldiers, I had been drafted, thought “The Cause” was illogical, had no choice about being there, and wanted to go home!

I ‘d learned a lot about being a Civil War infantryman in one short, sweltering afternoon: the food was absolutely awful; our wool uniforms were too hot, and felt like you were wearing a sweatsuit: the Kepi-style caps provided no sun protection and the canteens were too small.

The Sargent, sensing my discontent (because of my constant whining and complaining) picked on me. He proclaimed to all within hearing distance that I was a “slacker,” and called me a “baboon” when I dropped my canteen during drill. As darkness fell, the re-enactors would sleep under wool blankets, not to stay warm, but to fight off mosquitoes.

But the food was the worst. Dinner was a piece of hardtack, a fatty piece of bacon toasted on a bayonet over a campfire; horrible boiled coffee brewed in my tin cup and a wormy-looking apple. After eating my meager meal, I was ready to either desert or form a raiding party to attack the Yankees and get some real food!

Hardtack is easy to make, has a long shelf life, and all the flavor and texture of a fired brick!

Hardtack is one of the original trail and emergency foods, and it is worth considering if you are a prepper or are interested in wilderness or urban survival. The advantage is that hardtack is easy to make, transports easily and will last a reasonably long time if stored in appropriate containers. The disadvantage is the bland taste, and traditional toughness.

Even after yeast was discovered by the Egyptians, there was a purpose for unleavened breads. It was easy to carry and durable, so it was standard fare for hunters and warriors. Centuries later, Christopher Columbus took unleavened bread on his journeys.

Hardtack remained a staple in the New World. During the early settlement of North America, the exploration of the continent, the American Revolution, and on through the American

Hardtack was a durable, if bland-tasting, field ration.

Civil War, armies were kept alive with hardtack. A basic concept in war is that the side that keeps its soldiers from going hungry will probably win.

Hardtack is also reasonably nutritious. Wheat flour is more than 10% protein and includes Vitamin B. During emergencies, people can live for quite a while on just bread and water. Although raw flour is hard to digest, in the form of hard bread, it is edible.

No one has determined just when, or how, during the American Civil War, hard bread began to be referred to as hardtack. Apparently, it was first called hardtack by the Union Army of the Potomac; although the name spread to other units, it was generally referred to as hard bread by the armies of the West.

Regardless of the time frame, if you’re a history buff, prepper or hard-core survivalist, you should consider including hardtack in your emergency food supplies or survival kit. A guaranteed conversation starter at any campfire, campout or outdoor event, hardtack can have a useful place in today’s survival kit.

(It only takes a few additional ingredients to turbocharge the nutritional value of hardtack. To each cup of flour in the recipe, add one tablespoon of soy flour, one teaspoon of wheat germ and one teaspoon of powdered milk. There is no difference in the taste, and these ingredients combine to make the bread a complete protein.)

There are many versions and varieties of hardtack recipes: Try some of these to start out.

    Army Hardtack Recipe

    Ingredients:

Mix the flour and salt together in a bowl. Add just enough water (less than two cups) so that the mixture will stick together, producing a dough that won’t stick to hands, rolling pin or pan. Mix the dough by hand. Roll the dough out, shaping it roughly into a rectangle. Cut into the dough into squares about 3 x 3 inches and ˝ inch thick.

After cutting the squares, press a pattern of four rows of four holes into each square, using a nail or other such object. Do not punch through the dough. The appearance you want is similar to that of a modern saltine cracker. Turn each square over and do the same thing to the other side.

Place the squares on an ungreased cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Turn each piece over and bake for another 30 minutes. The crackers should be slightly brown on both sides.

The fresh crackers are easily broken, but as they dry, they harden and assume the consistency of fired brick.

    Swedish Hardtack

    I cup water
    3 tbsp. vegetable oil
    3 tbsp. honey
    >3 cups rye flour (or 1 1/2 cups rye & 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour)
    >1 1/2 tbsp. brewer’s yeast (optional)
    1/4 tsp. salt

Mix liquids together. In a separate bowl, mix dry ingredients. Combine the mixtures, stirring to moisten throughout. Form a ball. On a floured surface, flatten the dough, and roll out thinly. Cut into squares and prick each cracker with the tines of a fork a couple of times. Transfer to lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 425° F for around 8 minutes, checking to be sure not to over-brown. It is best served warm.

Mix: two cups of all-purpose flour and a half teaspoon of salt. Use more salt for authenticity. Mix by hand. Add a teaspoon of shortening and a half cup of water, stirred in a little at a time to form a very stiff dough. Beat the dough to a half inch thickness with a clean top mallet or rifle butt. Fold the sheet of dough into six layers. Continue to beat and to fold the dough a half dozen times until it is elastic. Roll the dough out to a half-inch thickness before cutting it with a floured biscuit cutter or bayonet. Bake for about a half hour in a 325° F oven.

The basic ingredients are flour, salt and water. General directions are also similar: Dissolve the salt in water and work it into flour using your hands. The dough should be firm and pliable but not sticky or dry. Flatten the dough onto a cookie sheet to about 1/4 inch thick, and cut into squares 3 inches by 3 inches. Pierce each square with 16 holes about ˝ inch apart. Bake in oven until edges are brown or dough is hard.

Preheat the oven to 400° F For each cup of flour add 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix salt and flour with just enough water to bind. Bake 20-25 minutes. The longer you bake the hardtack, the more authentic it will appear.

    A Sailor’s Diet

    • 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned or quick oats.
    • 3 cups unbleached flour.
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda.
    In a separate container, mix:
    • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk.
    • 3 tablespoons honey.
    • 1/2 cup melted bacon drippings or shortening.
Combine the two sets of ingredients. When the dough is thoroughly mixed, roll it out on a floured board to a thickness of about a quarter inch. Cut out circles of dough with a large drinking glass dipped in flour and put them on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for about 5 1/2 minutes at 450° F.

Let the hardtack cool on a wire rack before serving with jam or jelly.

How to Stay Cool During a Power Outage/Heat Wave Emergency

Posted on July 6th, 2011 by Leon in Survival Skills

All things considered, any emergency situation can be made worse by the weather!

How will you stay cool when the power goes out during a heat wave?

    By Leon Pantenburg

What happens when an earthquake occurs along the New Madrid Seismic Zone (The United States’ second largest earthquake area, located near New Madrid, Mo., along the Mississippi River)? And how much worse will conditions be if this catastrophe happens during the winter when it’s -20 degrees?
On the other hand, how will you stay cool and safe, if an earthquake, flood, tornado, tropical storm etc. knocks out the power grid when the temperature is well over 100 degrees outside? If you don’t have to evacuate, how can you stay cool inside your house without power?

Shift into SurvivalCommonSense.com mode by educating and preparing yourself.

To start with: Don’t underestimate the danger of high temperatures!

About 400 Americans die each year from summer heat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, the National Weather Service claims excessive heat is the number one weather-related killer, causing more fatalities per year than floods, lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, winter storms and extreme cold.

There are energy-efficient, environmentally-sound methods of dealing with the heat inside your house, says Bobbie J. Bourne, Emergency Services Director of the Bend, Oregon American Red Cross.

Start staying cool by taking care of yourself, and keeping hydrated, Bourne advises, and reduce physical activities during the hot part of the day.
“If you’re thirsty, that means you’re not drinking enough,” Bourne said. “Avoid caffeine and hot drinks and make sure you drink lots of water and drinks that replace electrolytes, such as Gatorade. Eat smaller meals, and eat something cold. Wear loose, light-colored clothing. You might want to put water in a spray bottle and cool yourself off with that.”

Keep the sunshine, and heat, out of your house by pulling the drapes shut.

Then take a look at your home and think about how you can reduce the heat coming in, and regulate the interior temperature naturally. That beautiful sunshine pouring through the windows also heats up the air inside, so a good way to reduce that heat source is with drapes or window coverings.

An effective way to use the coverings, Bourne says, is to pull them shut during the day when the sun is beating on the windows.

“Keep your windows open at night, so the cool air can come in, then shut the windows and pull the drapes in the morning,” Bourne said. “Your house will stay cooler during the day. When it gets cooler at night, open the windows and get the hot air out of the house.”

Depending on the emergency, there might not be electrical power to the area for months, or it might be sporadic. If the power does come back on, even briefly, a good, quick way to get the hot air moving out of the overheated house is with a pair of electric fans. Coleman Free-Standing Tent Fan
Place one facing in by the window where air is coming in, Bourne said, and one at an opposite window positioned to blow warm air out. This can create a nice “wind tunnel” effect in pulling air through the house, and that will cool the interior.Texsport FAN/LIGHT DELUXE COMBO

Let’s suppose that there is some intermittent electrical power available, but you can’t use the central air conditioning
Here are some tips from the American Red Cross for staying cool inside when it’s hot outside:

    • Make a “swamp cooler” by putting a bucket or pan of water in front of a fan. This will help cool the air as it is circulated. (I lived in an antebellum house in Mississippi, with no air conditioning, for several hot summers. This technique works!)
    • Minimize the use of your oven. Use your grill outside, Bourne recommends, or plug your toaster oven into an outside electrical outlet to cook.
    • Wait until after the sun has gone down to run heat-producing appliances.
    • Line-dry your clothes to avoid using the dryer.
    • Use ceiling fans to create a breeze and to re-circulate air.
    • Run the bathroom fan after you shower to pull the humidity out of the house.
    • Trade your hot shower in for a cold one.
    • Let your hair air dry after a shower, and enjoy the cooling effect of wet hair while you wait for it to dry.
    • Minimize the amount of bedding you use.
    • Make sure all air vents are free of obstructions. If they’re covered with furniture, the cool air won’t circulate.
    • Close your fireplace flue to avoid losing cool air.
Survival of any emergency, be it in an urban or wilderness survival situation, ultimately all boils down to education and preparation. Think about possible weather scenarios – hot or cold - as part of your family’s preparedness plans.

(Here’s an unrelated poem by James Autry called Nights Under a Tin Roof. It’s here because I like it!)

    Defeating Night Vision Gear

Question: Is it possible to defeat night vision gear without having any of your own? If so, how?

Lights of any kind will blind or even shut off Night Vison Devices

    Flash lights

    Chem Lights

    Spot lights

    Strobe Lights

On Generation 3 or higher Night Vision Devices the flashlight idea is not gonna work as well ... but still causes a blurring effect

*** Note *** - Not a good idea to hold these lights when trying to defeat night vision goggles .. googles come off and they just aim for the light

dangle them from a tree by a string - have an additional string attached from a good distance away that can be tugged on to move those lights in differant directions for 360 degree blind out and even the game a little

Grapes Linked To Alzheimers Disease Prevention

    July 20, 2011
    by Personal Liberty News Desk

A chemical that occurs naturally in grapes may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have suggested that antioxidants found in grapes called polyphenols could possibly protect the brain against cognitive decline.

The study, which was reported in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, found that a substance in the brain thought to contribute to the spread of Alzheimer’s was significantly reduced in the brains of mice after they were injected with grape seed extract.

Researchers released a statement explaining the importance of recognizing who is at risk for the disease in order for this preventative treatment to work.

“It will be critical to identify subjects who are at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, so that we can initiate treatments very early and possibly even in asymptomatic patients (patients with no current symptoms),” said lead researcher Giulio Maria Pasinetti, M.D., Ph.D.

The Alzheimer’s Association reports that age is the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, followed by family history. The organization also states that Alzheimer’s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only one among the top 10 that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.

    Survive The Heat

July 20, 2011 by Marcy Bonebright

Exposure to extreme heat can lead to illness or even death. Protect your family and yourself by understanding how to survive a heat wave.

With heat advisories being issued across the United States, it’s important to be prepared in case a heat wave affects your area. Exposure to extreme heat can lead to illness or even death. Knowing the best ways to beat the heat is one of the most necessary survival skills, no matter where you live.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) suggests staying indoors, preferably in an air-conditioned place, as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest level of a building, away from sunshine. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and protect your face and head with a wide-brimmed hat. If you must work outside during a heat wave, avoid working during the hottest part of the day. Always make sure to drink plenty of water, and avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.

“Historically, from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. During this period, more people in this country died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined,” a guide from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) read.

“People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating. But under some conditions, sweating just isn’t enough. In such cases, a person’s body temperature rises rapidly. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain or other vital organs.”

Recognizing the signs of heat-related illness could save your life. Heat cramps, which are muscle pains and spasms accompanied by heavy sweating, are the least severe heat-related illness, but are often the first signal that the body is having trouble with the heat, according to FEMA. If heat cramps are ignored, they can lead to heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke, which can be deadly.

FEMA’s first aid tips for dealing with heat-related illnesses are available here.

UN may switch blue helmets to green, then launch climate change peacekeeping wars

    Thursday, July 21, 2011
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

    (NaturalNews)
The United Nations may soon announce that merely by changing the color of its soldiers' helmets from blue to green, it can intervene in the business of sovereign nations under the guise of so-called "climate change peacekeeping."

As you consider this, keep in mind that the current bombing of infrastructure in Libya is also brazenly called "peacekeeping." In fact, there's hardly a military campaign that's been conducted in the last hundreds years that wasn't sold to the public as a way to create "peace." Now, the UN is on the verge of "waging peace" wearing green helmets instead of blue helmets. The invocation of all things "green," it seems, provides justification for just about anything these days... including war.

This new "green" UN initiative is due for discussion in a special meeting of the United Nations security council, where the organization will decide whether to expand its "peacekeeping" role to cover everything that happens in a world suffering under climate change. An article in The Guardian explains that this plan involves "...a new environmental peacekeeping force -- green helmets -- which could step into conflicts caused by shrinking resources." (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/jul/20/un-climate-change-peace...)

Justification for UN troops on U.S. soil?

This would give the UN justification to place a "peacekeeping" force on U.S. soil, of course. Virtually the entire U.S. Southeast -- from Texas all the way to D.C. -- is currently sweltering under a severe heat wave combined with a hundred-year drought in many areas. Under the UN's new "climate change peacekeeping" initiatives, if crop failures result in riots, they could drop in a few hundred thousand UN troops -- all wearing GREEN helmets -- and then explain they're here to save us from "conflicts caused by shrinking resources."

Because, you know, GREEN means it's good for us, you see. Perhaps they'll even paint the tips of their bullets green so that when they start firing into the crowds of innocent protestors, they can claim it's not an act of war but rather "green kinetic action." The streets may be red with blood, but the evening news will present it all to you as a new "green initiative" that's good for the environment!

The Guardian goes on to report:

In an official "Concept Note" ahead of the meeting, Germany said the security council needed to draw up scenarios for dealing with the affects of extreme temperatures and rising seas. How would the UN deal with climate refugees?

As you can see from this quote, the UN feels that it must function as the police force of the world, intervening in the affairs of sovereign nations, and even painting their helmets green to make it all acceptable to the masses. If a foreign military force invades the United States of America and puts non-U.S. boots on the ground, that's called a military invasion. But I guess if they paint their helmets green, it's all okay, right?

Hopefully they'll paint their helmets NEON green so they stand out much like the British Empire's redcoat soldiers in 1776 who made easy targets.

Coming soon: Food supply disruptions leading to global riots

One thing the UN is getting right in all this, by the way, is the implied prediction that massive global crop failures are headed our way. Given the current depletion of food production resources (topsoil, fossil water supplies, etc.) a global food crisis is now inevitable. Food prices are already skyrocketing around the world, and the widespread use of GMOs is setting up our civilization for devastating food failures due to DNA contamination of food crops.

Food disruptions will, of course, lead to food riots. And food riots could get pretty ugly in high population areas (cities, namely) where the people import nearly 100 percent of their food. Even in places like New York City, we could see extreme food riots that have never been witnessed before in the history of America. But does this give the UN the right to intervene under the guise of green helmets?

Globalists think it does. The global elite are not merely setting us up for UN occupation under the excuse of "climate change peacekeeping," they're also the ones causing many of the problems in the first place! Who's behind the global GMO invasion? It's the global elite, of course. That's why the U.S. state department was caught on record saying that Spain should be punished for resisting GMOs (http://www.naturalnews.com/030828_GMOs_Wikileaks.html).

How about global vaccination campaigns that are actually sterilization efforts designed to limit population growth? (http://www.naturalnews.com/029911_va...ill_Gates.html) Then there's the issue of chemtrails, fluoride and all the other chemicals being dumped into the environment, which actually cause environmental problems that then provide justification for the UN to show up and police the world. Wouldn't it make more sense to just stop poisoning the planet with all these synthetic chemicals in the first place?

But no, the more problems there are in our world, the more power security forces are able to exercise over the populations. Conflict enables control. War is power, not peace. Every crisis in an opportunity. "Never waste a good crisis," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton famously said in a talk about climate change. And that's the whole point, you see: The global elite wish to exploit the very same environmental crises they've caused in order to gain more power over entire nations.

And now with this UN initiative, we're seeing yet another example of how "green" is used as a cover story for military imperialism. The term "climate change peacekeeping" is downright Orwellian in its tone and intention. Hitler fought wars to create "law and order." Stalin's atrocities were done in the name of "peace." The Crusades were mass killing campaigns conducted in the name of "God." Tyrants always have a justification for their wars, it seems. The killing that used to be done in the name of God will soon be conducted in the name of GREEN.

So get ready, America. Your neighborhoods are about to be "peacekept" by UN forces wearing green helmets and claiming to be operating under environmental initiatives that somehow give them the right to occupy your land and order you to obey. Remember, it's all about "Never waste a good crisis," and a global food crisis is headed your way very, very soon.

Gates Foundation Partner in Malawi Vaccinates 131 Children At Gunpoint

    Lois Rain
    Activist Post
    July 21, 2011

    Lois Rain, Contributing Writer
    Activist Post

The Gates Foundation has long been in an aggressive effort to vaccinate the world and often targets poor Africans. The Gates’ web site showcases Melinda Gates applauding Malawi for enforcing vaccine programs with its helpful “health surveillance assistants.” She calls Malawi one of the few countries “on track to reach the UN Millennium Development Goal.” And who are those assistants meeting the goal? Hyper-vigilant medics with help from police.

Bill Gates calls the vaccine-autism link “an absolute lie” and in a February CNN interview said, “the people who go and engage in those anti-vaccine efforts – you know, they, they kill children.” But as we can see from the recent actions from governments who partner with his foundation to forcefully implement vaccine programs, it could very well be the other way around.

Malawi Voice recently reported that about 131 children from Nsanje were vaccinated with anti-measles at gunpoint last week. They had fled from previous vaccine mandates into nearby towns, but after officials learned they had returned, medics along with police escorts tracked the children and forced them to vaccinate.

The children belonged to Zion and Atumwi Churches and parents took them into Mozambique to hide from officials with vaccines. It is unclear if those churches prohibit the use of vaccines, but a Malawi man with a Seventh Day Apostolic faith found himself sentenced to two year’s imprisonment for refusing to let his three children receive the measles vaccine. He did not believe in going to doctors or receiving vaccinations. Police said that they believed one of his children died from measles and he was charged for “endangering life by failing to supply necessities of life to a person under one’s care without lawful excuse.” According to a penal code. He pleaded for a light sentence because he cares for orphans, but the charges stand.

The Gates have repeatedly emphasized their goal to vaccinate every child on earth and it is clear that children and parents have no say in the matter. These families may have fled the vaccinations because of information, witnessing its harmful effects in others, religious beliefs, or hunches. Maybe they know it’s Bad Medicine or a modern version of smallpox blankets. A damaging, ineffective toxic cocktail.

Whatever the case, they had no choice. The Gates banner says “Human Rights! We come generously bearing good gifts of health and peace,” take the gifts or else…get shot?

It is also clear that the Gates applaud and support this type of force. Either way, the children get shot.

Every month,11,000(!) of these health surveillance assistants spend three weeks providing health care (vaccinations) and information and one week in the rural health clinics. “And they also make sure the vaccinations happen: not just at the village level, but all the way back through the system.” Melinda Gates said. [emphasis added]

That they do, with guns and needles aimed and loaded.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT: BE PREPARED AND ARMED

    By John Longenecker
    July 22, 2011
    NewsWithViews.com

I’m noticing a great many articles appearing which encourage citizen preparedness for widespread emergency. Many of these seminars are well-intentioned, but they are lacking several vital ingredients. Many of these are Physician-led lectures, and they lack the same vital ingredients.

The main thrust of any dependable household preparedness plan will arise from acceptance of the fact that assets will not reach them for days to weeks. Most programs do not mention citizen authority to act in the absence of first responders, that is, in the absence of Police and EMS. Most households do not know the latitude of their own authority and try to noodle out or guess about how to prepare, and noodle it all on the assumption that they are extremely limited.

The fact is that households are not as limited as they assume. Some disaster management seminars for citizens are like violence prevention seminars: they lack vital ingredients. Disaster preparedness sees three segments: disaster planning, disaster management and disaster recovery. These are managed best by adding several generous helpings of citizen involvement. The problem is that professional plans generally operate on citizen exclusion and obfuscate the value and secrets of citizen authority.

In time of emergency, such as an earthquake, a flood, or a terrorist strike, first responders of Police and EMS are immediately overwhelmed. It will be hours before new shifts and others mustered to duty will show up and be deployed.

The sheer expanse of geography will affect deployment, travel time, search and rescue, and care. These will take more hours to days to reach and triage victims, not to mention treat them and transport them. For days and days spent calling in extra personnel then deploying over large expanses of land, many patients go without. They have to wait.

National Guard, Army, FEMA, insurance underwriters, Red Cross and other non-profits are not first responders, they are secondary. They canvas neighborhoods, leave markers, rescue when necessary, recover when necessary, and generally move people to safety. They have a lot of mobile assets, but they, too, are not on scene as fast as others: you.Patients do not always have to wait. Citizens do not have to ask permission.

To get out of Preparedness Lite, certain realities must be seen in the public interest because it is in the household interest. One house does it right, other homes do it right, the community is doing it right. Safer homes become safer communities. Safer communities mean survival.

Break your preparedness plan into five categories. Here are a few added suggestions to enrich the lighter seminars and fortify your abilities and goals: 1. Food and water.
    2. Energy.
    3. Safety
    4. Security.
    5. Ability to move or help others.

    1. Food and water is not to be underestimated. Figure how many persons are in your household, how much they eat and drink in four meals a day, and multiply it by five months. Don’t go with perishable items. Remember how much water is used for laundry and personal hygiene.

Food and water is an essential not only for nutrition and health, but for managing stress. Disaster is not the time to diet, and it is the time to be sure and get the right nutrition including comfort foods to manage stress. It’s hard to go wrong with chocolate bars, for instance. Be sure you include favorites in ample supply when you go shopping for your Disaster Planning Pantry.

    2. Energy in cooking fuel, energy for both heating and cooling, and electrical energy for portable and fixed lighting. Solar panels are tremendous in recharging batteries to operate AC inverters to run small and even large AC devices. Don’t forget both AM and FM radios on battery and two-way radios for your freedom to move about the neighborhood and stay in touch. Solar panels charge batteries so that your devices can operate at night. Buy enough so that you can operate your devices twenty-four hours a day for at least two days at a time.

    3. Safety includes training in First-aid and CPR. Do it. It is also having enough of your medicine regimen to last a reasonable portion of a disaster, which could easily be months and months.

Contact your provider to write you a prescription. Pharmacies and providers are already used to filling prescriptions for patients’ Earthquake Preparedness Kits. Ask about some for you. Some providers urge patients to take smaller dosages when supplies are expected to run out and not be replaced, but it might be better to have the more ample amounts on hand.

Be sure to have some place to store your meds. Some homes have two pantries for that purpose, each with refrigeration that is electric or well insulated. Battery operated coolers can be found and recharged by solar power and can be dependable for Insulin-dependent patients. Some cars have them. You may have to look hard for this device, and if you cannot find one (or if they are sold out) you may have to build one.

You can also ask your provider for alternatives to refrigerated Insulin. A good substitute for Insulin is, in the opinion of some endocrinologists, sulfonylureas which stimulate the pancreas to manufacture more. Ask your provider and mention that you are building your Earthquake Preparedness Kit. The stuff keeps better, it’s easy to take, and rapid-acting. Be sure to have snack on hand.

This is part of the serious-mindedness of preparedness: if you don’t see it, ask for it. If they don’t have it, make it yourself.

So far, all of this is Chapter One stuff. Everybody knows these first ones. Let’s get serious now.

    4. Security. Make certain your household can defend itself with lethal force. Remember that the Police are not the only agent of the law, the sovereign citizens being the ultimate legislators. Any person can keep the peace and enforce the law within reason, especially felonies, and self-defense is one of the better established doctrines which citizens have summoned for generations.
This is one of the ingredients missing from Preparedness Lite, being armed for the security of the household and the neighborhood. One does not “Play Cop”; one realizes that cops derive their authority from us to begin with.

A handgun is essential for close quarter use and less conspicuous movement around the neighborhood. I will not say that all laws are suspended and encourage people to willy-nilly break laws, but in time of emergency, latitude and reasonableness under the circumstances reigns for neighborhood safety. Reasonableness is a superb guide under any circumstances.

At other times, a shotgun is better suited than a handgun. There are bazillions of reports where the sound of a well-oiled slide action of a shotgun with the subtle sound of a shell actually being chambered has saved more lives than some might think. Ownership of lethal force kept handy and battery-ready in preparedness is safer than an entire neighborhood being disarmed only to be at the mercy of thugs.

Thugs are not the only denizens to watch out for. Scavengers thrive in time of disaster.

Scavengers are opportunistic predators who simply await disaster. These people are the child abductors, rapists, the sneak-thieves and the molesters who may have no history of crime, but as opportunity appears where chaos serves as cover, scavengers surface in large numbers.

Scavengers are the predators of polymorphic taste for desiring and seizing whatever turns up, be it a child, an old woman, a couple of kids flashing collectors items or a nearby unlocked front door.

Scavengers are the first-timers in time of disaster when no one is looking as much as others are the serial offenders when no one is looking. In time of chaos, they may never be caught or stopped. As I said, they employ chaos and conditions as their cover, and they can be very creative.

These people are added to the population of thugs of property crimes. These are the offenders of person. These scavengers are ordinarily stopped – if they are stopped at all – by general timidity up to now, by societal alertness of others, such as witnesses, Good Samaritans, and by other safeguards. Alertness actually prevents many attacks of opportunity for these first-timers, but make no mistake; these otherwise timid predators are as dangerous as roving packs of dogs, who also emerge in time of disaster; they don’t come out under normal conditions, but with nobody to stop them, they come out to feast.

Another reason to have a gun is for all sorts of dogs now dangerous like never before, both four-legged and two-legged.

These compound the population of dangerous persons and, unlike thugs, are easily overlooked, hard to recognize and in fairly large numbers. Your being armed with a handgun handy and battery-ready can make all the difference in the world.

Anti-freedom personalities believe that they know how much ammunition is too much ammunition. Gun owners know that ammunition availability is never assured, so it is not out of line to have thousands of rounds handy. Thousands of rounds in any household is by no means out of the ordinary any more than having plenty of soft-drinks or fire extinguishers around is. Practice consumes large numbers of ammo, and you never know when your life will depend on having enough over time of doing without police. Consult your gun seller for what is right for you.

To be better prepared for the hazards of a disaster is to be armed. Even when assets do arrive, they may not have lethal force of their own to back up any security for the neighborhood. They may have ammo shortages of their own.

They don’t have to protect people anyway, and millions of gun owner know this. Police have no affirmative duty to protect individuals from the criminal acts of others. For the non-gun owner interested in better preparedness, this means learning how to shoot, selecting a few different weapons, and taking training in personal defense. Thugs, scavengers and packs of wild dogs who are afraid, hungry and vicious are among the worst hazards of a disaster. You will not talk them out of plundering you. Less-then-lethal doesn’t work.

You don’t have to shoot, at least not as a knee-jerk reaction. Self-defense is not about reaction, it is about purposeful response. Often – often enough – this is adequate to discourage predators, but you can’t do that without a gun and you certainly won’t be taken seriously without one. The key is to resolve that you will be armed for the case when you need it to protect yourself and loved ones, and resolve that you will be fully prepared to shoot if you must.

Understand why you are armed: you are alone and without anyone else to protect the community. You are not the self-appointed police of the neighborhood, you and the rest of your neighbors can cooperate in an effective and most practical protection of the neighborhood.

Remember also that - in time of disaster - a simple intention of robbery can suddenly change into an intention of no witnesses. Or an opportunistic rape or beating. It’s all about using chaos as cover, and for the predators who have such a carte blanche, imagination thrives.

In being armed, the key is not in reading the mind of thugs you may encounter, the key is in writing the mind of thugs. One is not safe in waiting for a predator to divulge his intentions, the key is in notifying him of yours.
The best way is to take training.

    Take course.

Take Emergency Medical Technician -1 courses.

    Take handgun and shotgun courses.

    5. Your ability to move and to help others. Being visibly armed, you may find, is common in time of emergency. You do not want your household to be one which is noticeably not armed. Being armed resonates with other armed families and builds cohesion, which is essential for neighborhood survival by having at least one less hazard. Being armed is not a hazard, it removes a hazard of not being armed and therefore likely prey. Being able to move about the community safely to aid others may make all the difference in their world.

Being armed is just as important a PR move of prevention as it is when the gun is fired in self defense. Lives can be saved and no one needs to be shot if thugs get the picture early on that their crap is futile and a community refuses to be a victim.

Finally, think of a community fund. Gather every house on the block and see about everyone contributing to what you believe all of you will need as a community asset. Some might like to purchase at least ten walkie-talkies as the very first item. I know of a neighborhood which plans to put up vehicles as end-of-the-street blockers so that outsiders cannot drive in and maraud the neighborhood. They voted on whose cars would be used and who would have the keys so they can be moved. No nice cars on that list. Now, that’s cooperation!
Whatever you do, take it seriously. Assume nothing. Do not guess, learn. Meet, talk, and practice.

Don’t settle for Preparedness Lite. Be armed with knowledge, authority, and lethal force.

You are in control of all three.

Disaster is the worst possible time to exclude yourself from the roster of available resources for survival.

There is no such thing as a fair fight; just a winner and a loser. In the military we never taught fair; we looked for weaknesses and exploited the hell out of them

if it takes a ball bat; then thats the name of the game

if the game escalates and it usually will rapidly; you better be prepaired to escalate to the next level twice as fast or already be up one level to what is coming your way

I'm talking in your home here... not walking down the street. If your crazy enough to do that by yourself than the best of luck to ya

and for heavens sake... video what you can prior to the event as evidence if you need it
