Salt Not So Bad For You,
    Say Scientists

    By Nina Goswami
    The Telegraph - UK
    5-29-5

Advice on reducing your sodium intake should be taken with a pinch of salt, according to the latest research. Not only is there no need to eat less of it but it can also be positively dangerous for some people's health.

Scientists across Europe have completed three studies which contradict a British Government health warning that people should cut their intake to six grams a day.

Research from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands, to be published this summer, showed that there was no material benefit from a lower intake.

Prof Deiderick Grobbee, a cardiovascular specialist and an author of the report, said: "If people stick within a range of moderate sodium intake, which we normally get from salt in our food, there is no material variation to the risk of mortality."

There was little to be gained, he said, by cutting salt for anyone on a typical Western diet who eats the equivalent of 16g or three-and-half teaspoonfuls a day.

The independent research, known as the Rotterdam Study, involved almost 8,000 people in their fifties and above. Each person's sodium intake was estimated from a nightly urine sample and compared with their blood pressure over a month.

The findings showed that as long as their salt intake was moderate - no more than 16g a day - there was an insignificant effect on blood pressure.

Excessive consumption, however, between 21g and 27g a day increased the risk of a stroke, although there was no causal link with cardiovascular problems such as heart failure.

Other scientists at the conference, organised by European Union salt producers, went further saying that the guidance to reduce salt intake could be dangerous to pregnant women and the elderly.

Prof Markus Mohaupt, from the Inselspital Academic Health Centre, Bern, in Switzerland, found that pregnant women with pre-eclampsia - a condition that affects two in 25 pregnant women - could benefit from up to 20g of salt a day.

Pre-eclampsia causes high blood pressure and can lead to still birth. The elderly are also at risk if they stick to a low-salt diet, according to Prof Ingo F¸sgen, a cardiovascular specialist from Kliniken St Antonius, in Germany.

His findings showed that one in 10 of the older population suffered from sodium deficiency which could result in nervous disposition, hallucinations, muscle cramps and hip fractures.

The results, however, which were presented at the conference in Brussels last week, were condemned by supporters of salt reduction.

Prof Graham MacGregor, a cardiovascular specialist at St George's Hospital, London, and the chairman of Consensus Action on Salt and Health, said: "You will always find scientists that will go against the main body of research.

"Chronic ingestion of the amount of salt that we eat slowly puts up our blood pressure and is largely responsible for many strokes and heart attacks and that's why the five to six grams a day target was set."

A spokesman for the Food Standards Agency added: "It's misleading and irresponsible to challenge the Government's recommendation using a very selective view of science, and will not help people make healthier choices about what they eat.

"Over one third of British adults have high blood pressure and two thirds of them are not receiving any treatment.

"There is scientific consensus that there are real benefits to be achieved by reducing salt intake, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke."

19 Studies Link GMO Foods to Organ Disruption

    28 April 2011

A new paper demonstrates that consuming genetically modified (GM) food leads to significant organ disruptions in rats and mice. Researchers reviewed data from 19 studies and found that parameters including blood and urine biochemistry and organ weights were significantly disrupted in the GM-fed animals.
The kidneys of males were the most affected, experiencing 43.5 percent of all the changes. The livers of females followed at more than 30 percent. Other organs may have been affected too, including the heart and spleen, and blood cells.
According to the Institute for Responsible Technology:
"The GM soybean and corn varieties used in the feeding trials 'constitute 83 percent of the commercialized GMOs' that are currently consumed by billions of people. While the findings may have serious ramifications for the human population, the authors demonstrate how a multitude of GMO-related health problems could easily pass undetected through the superficial and largely incompetent safety assessments that are used around the world."
Further, the biotechnology firm Monsanto is only an FDA approval away from its latest monstrosity -- soybeans that have been genetically modified to produce omega-3 fats. That FDA approval is expected this year.
Monsanto plans to include GM soybean oil in every product it can -- baked goods, baking mixes, breakfast cereals, cheeses, frozen dairy desserts, pasta, gravies and sauces, fruit juices, snack foods, candy, soups, and more.
    According to Forbes:
"Monsanto is so despised by environmentalists that Google's first suggested search term for the St. Louis company is 'Monsanto evil.' Readers ... voted Monsanto the world's most evil corporation in a January poll, giving the corporation a whopping 51 percent of the vote."
Scientists have also introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows in a process that they say will cause the cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk. They believe that this could provide an alternative to formula milk for babies.
Critics of GM technology questioned the safety of milk from genetically modified animals, and also its potential effect on the cattle's health.
    According to the Telegraph:
"The researchers used cloning technology to introduce human genes into the DNA of Holstein dairy cows before the genetically modified embryos were implanted into surrogate cows ... [T]he researchers said they were able to create cows that produced milk containing a human protein called lysozyme."

    Dr. Mercola's Comments:

In the latest review of genetically modified organisms (GMO) -- an analysis of 19 animal studies -- it was revealed that nearly 10 percent of blood, urine, organ and other parameters tested were significantly influenced by GMOs, with the liver and kidneys faring the worst.
The studies involved animals fed GM soy and corn, which comprise more than 80 percent of all GMOs cultivated on a large scale, and exist in virtually every processed food sold in the United States.
Clearly the danger posed by GM crops is no longer theoretical, yet because GM foods are patented inventions that are protected under copyright and proprietary information laws, the corporations controlling the seeds only allow them to be studied under very limited conditions.
Rarely (if ever) do they permit them to be studied for safety by anyone but the USDA (who hasn't yet seen the need to conduct rigorous long-term studies), and rarely are they studied beyond 30 or 90 days.
The GM Foods You're Eating Have Only Been Studied for 90 Days – at Most!

As Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology states:
"Only two studies reviewed in this new publication were over 90 days—both were non-industry research."
In order to obtain the raw data from the 90-day studies, the researchers had to take court actions and make official requests, and the results suggested that the beginnings of chronic disease may have been starting in the animals' liver and kidneys. What would have occurred in six months, a year or five years down the line remains unknown, as the studies have never been done.
    The researchers noted:
"The 90-day-long tests are insufficient to evaluate chronic toxicity, and the signs highlighted in the kidneys and livers could be the onset of chronic diseases. However, no minimal length for the tests is yet obligatory for any of the GMOs cultivated on a large scale, and this is socially unacceptable in terms of consumer health protection."
Further, when the data was reviewed in its entirety, the researchers found serious cause for concern that appeared to be overlooked by regulatory authorities:
"Some of these tests used controversial protocols which are discussed and statistically significant results that were considered as not being biologically meaningful by regulatory authorities, thus raising the question of their interpretations."
Given the obvious organ disruption that occurred in animals fed GM corn and soy for just 30-90 days, it is downright terrifying to think about what might happen to humans who eat these foods for a lifetime. The researchers state outright what the regulatory agencies have failed to acknowledge:
"We can conclude, from the regulatory tests performed today, that it is unacceptable to submit 500 million Europeans and several billions of consumers worldwide to the new pesticide GM-derived foods or feed, this being done without more controls (if any) than the only 3-month-long toxicological tests and using only one mammalian species, especially since there is growing evidence of concern.
This is why we propose to improve the protocol of the 90-day studies to 2-year studies with mature rats."
Why You Need to Think Twice Before Eating GMOs

There's very convincing evidence that genetically modified foods spell nothing but trouble for your health. As Smith discusses in this interview, scientists have discovered a number of health problems related to genetically modified foods in general, however, these studies have been repeatedly ignored by both the European Food Safety Authority and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In the only human feeding study ever published on genetically modified foods, seven volunteers ate Roundup-ready soybeans. These are soybeans that have herbicide-resistant genes inserted into them in order to survive being sprayed with otherwise deadly doses of Roundup herbicide.
In three of the seven volunteers, the gene inserted into the soy transferred into the DNA of their intestinal bacteria, and continued to function long after they stopped eating the GM soy!
There are serious medical implications to this finding.
However, the GM-friendly UK government, who funded the study, chose not to fund any follow up research to see if GM corn -- which is engineered to produce an insecticide called BT toxin -- might also transfer and continue to create insecticide inside your intestines.
These kinds of studies are sorely needed, and fast, because as of right now, about 85 percent of the corn grown in the US is genetically engineered to either produce an insecticide, or to survive the application of herbicide. And about 91-93 percent of all soybeans are genetically engineered to survive massive doses of Roundup herbicide.
What this means is that nearly ALL foods you buy that contain either corn or soy, in any form, will contain GMO unless it's certified organic by the USDA.
In this interview, Smith also mentions an Italian study where they fed BT corn to mice. As a result, the mice expressed a wide variety of immune responses commonly associated with diseases such as:
Rheumatoid arthritis Inflammatory bowel disease Osteoporosis
Atherosclerosis Various types of cancer Allergies
    Lou Gehrig's disease

In addition, Smith has documented at least 65 serious health risks from GM products of all kinds. Among them:
    • Offspring of rats fed GM soy showed a five-fold increase in mortality, lower birth weights, and the inability to reproduce
    • Male mice fed GM soy had damaged young sperm cells
    • The embryo offspring of GM soy-fed mice had altered DNA functioning
    • Several US farmers reported sterility or fertility problems among pigs and cows fed on GM corn varieties
    • Investigators in India have documented fertility problems, abortions, premature births, and other serious health issues, including deaths, among buffaloes fed GM cottonseed products
Beware of New GMO Products: Omega-3 Soybean Oil

GM crops have already invaded our food supply, and more GM –foods are in the pipeline, but you'd never know it because GM foods are unlabeled.
One of the latest creations from GM giant Monsanto is a genetically modified soybean that produces omega-3 fats. " Stearidonic acid (SDA) soybean oil, as the new product is called, is only one FDA approval away from becoming a reality, but although omega-3 fats are clearly healthy, omega-3 from GM soybean oil most likely certainly is not.
Not only do you need to get animal-based omega-3 fats in your diet for the most benefits, but also soybean oil is not a food you want to consume, especially if it has been manipulated to contain omega-3 fats. GM soy has been linked to an increase in allergies, as well as has the potential to cause infertility in future generations, It's also one of the polyunsaturated vegetable oils you need to cut down on in your diet if you want better health.
Unfortunately, as Forbes reported;"Monsanto plans to include SDA soybean oil in just about everything: "baked goods and baking mixes, breakfast cereals and grains, cheeses, dairy product analogs, fats and oils, fish products, frozen dairy desserts and mixes, grain products and pastas, gravies and sauces, meat products,
… milk products, nuts and nut products, poultry products, processed fruit juices, processed vegetable products, puddings and fillings, snack foods, soft candy, and soups and soup mixes, at levels that will provide 375 milligrams (mg) of SDA per serving."
It's unclear whether the new SDA soybean oil will be listed on labels, but if you see "stearidonic acid (SDA) soybean oil" on a label, now you'll know what it is so you can avoid it.
The Latest Creation: GM "Breast Milk" From Cows

Researchers are also trying to produce "human" breast milk using genetically modified cows.
Scientists used cloning technology to introduce human genes into dairy cows to produce milk they say has the same properties as human breast milk and could provide an alternative to formula or human breast milk for babies in about 10 years.
Producing GM food for babies is alarming, as the process of moving genes around carries unpredictable risks. One study that looked at the insertion of a single gene into a human cell found that up to 5 percent of the genes had significantly changed their level of output.
This means that hundreds or thousands of genes could change their levels of protein expression when a single gene is inserted -- and even one change can be dangerous. As The Telegraph reported, already there were signs of trouble with the GM "human" cow milk studies:
" … During two experiments by the Chinese researchers, which resulted in 42 transgenic calves being born, just 26 of the animals survived after ten died shortly after birth, most with gastrointestinal disease, and a further six died within six months of birth."
Do You Know … You're Probably Eating GMOs?

I've gone on record saying that due to the amount of GM crops now grown in the United States (over 90 percent of all corn is GM corn and over 95 percent all soy is GM soy) EVERY processed food you encounter at your local supermarket that does not bear the "USDA Organic" label is filled with GM components.
So you're eating GM foods, and you have been for the last decade, whether you knew it or not. You can thank Congress for this, and the USDA and Monsanto. What ultimate impact these GM foods will have on your health is still unknown, but increased disease, infertility and birth defects appear to be on the top of the list of most likely side effects.
As was recently stated in the NY Times:
"A majority of our foods already contain GMOs and there's little reason to think more isn't on the way. It seems our "regulators" are using us and the environment as guinea pigs, rather than demanding conclusive tests. And without labeling, we have no say in the matter whatsoever."
Are You Ready to Avoid GMOs?

If you don't already have a copy of the Non-GMO Shopping Guide, please print one out and refer to it often. It can help you identify and avoid foods with GMOs. Also remember to look for products (including organic products) that feature the Non-GMO Project Verified Sealto be sure that at-risk ingredients have been tested for GMO content.
You can also download the free iPhone application that is available in the iTunes store. You can find it by searching for ShopNoGMO in the applications.
If you're feeling more ambitious, you can also order the Non-GMO Shopping Tips brochure from the Institute of Responsible Technology in bulk and give it to your family and friends.
When possible, buy your fresh produce and meat from local farmers who have committed to using non-GM seeds and avoid non-organic processed foods as much as possible, as again these are virtually 100-percent guaranteed to contain GM ingredients.
Genetically modified foods are, from my perception, one of the most significant threats that we have against the very sustainability of the human race, so everything you can do to avoid them is a step in the right direction for humankind.

Health Rangers predictions for 2011 - 2012; an era of self reliance and human awakening

    Monday, January 03, 2011
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) What's ahead for 2011 - 2012? This time in human history promises to bring forth more changes than any other similar duration of time known to our civilization. I believe the changes that will occur in the next two years will rock the foundations of our economies, governments and belief systems. In the end, after considerable turmoil, I see a great expansion of human consciousness and a maturing of the human race. Here are the details...

More people growing their own food

Beginning in 2011 and continuing for many years beyond, we will see an explosion in the number of people growing their own food. People see the big trends in the food supply fast approaching: GMO contamination of crops, the loss of local food production due to FDA interference, the crackdown on small farmers, and even disruptions in the global food supply.

As people realize the importance of having their own home-grown source of food, we will see a surge in backyard gardens, food storage and in-home production methods such as sprouting and food dehydrating.

We will see a strong "back to basics" interest surge leading up to 2012, with many people choosing to move out of high-density cities (or even high-density nations) and seek self-reliance in more rural areas.

This will also reveal renewed interest in home-grown meat production with more people growing (and eating) their own chickens and cows rather than relying on processed, factory-farmed meats.

Increased awareness of natural remedies and health freedom

The natural health community will achieve significant victories over the next two years in awakening people to natural remedies, medicinal herbs and the core ideas of health freedom. The monopolistic pushers of pharmaceuticals are fighting a desperate, losing battle to try to keep people ignorant, but they will lose that fight and natural medicine will ultimately emerge as the healing method of choice for an increasing number of people.

Natural childbirth will continue to gain recognition around the world, and more parents will begin to question the ADHD drugging of their children. The industry of psychiatry as we know it today will continue crumbling under the burden of fraud and criminal behavior, finally collapsing well before 2020 thanks to the efforts of a few groups, notably CCHR.

The global shift away from pharmaceuticals and toward disease prevention and nutrition will accelerate in 2011 - 2012, with vitamin D leading the charge. An increasing number of people will learn about top nutrients such as resveratrol, astaxanthin and omega-3s. Nutrition education will become increasingly evident in public schools, and many school lunch programs will be reworked to remove more processed dead foods and increase real nutrition.

Significant victories will be achieved over water fluoridation, mercury fillings and GMOs (see below). The vaccine issue, however, will remain highly contentious. Victory over seasonal flu vaccines will take many more years...

More people waking up to reality

Today, most people are sleepwalking through their lives, functioning as cogs in a giant machine of which they have no knowledge and no control. Over the next two years, that will significantly change. More and more people will be awakened into a state of awareness. They will realize that living out their lives working mundane jobs, watching television, eating junk food and taking pharmaceuticals is not fulfilling their true purpose in life, and many will seek a higher purpose.

An increasing number of people will come to understand that their lives are mere illusion -- that they've been following programming set out for them by others, and that if they wish to truly achieve freedom (of mind), they must break out of the patterns that have been constructed for them.

As a result, we're going to see more people rebelling against the status quo while simultaneously expanding their own awareness of the bigger picture -- how things work in our world and what their role might be in uplifting our shared reality.

In the short term, this might result in a tremendous amount of strife, but in the end, it will give rise to a true uplifting of consciousness among the people in our world.

Specific upcoming victories in the world of natural health

    • The People will achieve significant victories over GMOs. I believe that We the People will ultimately win this battle against GMOs in America. As information about the dangers of GMOs continues to spread, people will increasingly demand that GMO foods be labeled. With enough support (perhaps in 2012, but probably later), a law will be passed requiring that GMO foods be labeled as such, and that will spell the beginning of the end of the GMO era in America.

    • The FDA will, one way or another, be forced to admit that mercury fillings ("silver fillings") are dangerous for human health. At the very least, the agency will warn that children and expectant mothers should not be exposed to silver fillings. If this does not happen, you can expect a popular revolt against the FDA and a loud cry for the dissolution of the entire agency.

    • The next big public health battle will be over water fluoridation, and you can expect NaturalNews, the Fluoride Action Network and many other organizations to turn up the heat on the dangers of water fluoridation. Expect to see the fluoride pushers eventually forced to back down and admit that the fluoride dripped into the municipal water supplies is actually collected as a toxic waste byproduct of the phosphate mining industry. (We are releasing a significant mini-documentary on this topic in the next 30 days.) The reputation of the ADA -- which has backed mercury fillings for decades -- is headed into the dumpsters.

    • On the issue of freedom and liberty, I predict a surge of interest in Libertarian political philosophy from both former Democrats and former Republicans who realize that the path to prosperity and freedom is found in individual liberty and personal responsibility. I see the Tea Party suffering from disillusionment as its own elected members betray its supporters with more taxes and Big Government spending. Expect to see Ron Paul and Rand Paul do extraordinarily well in the coming years (as long as they stay on principle), and watch for a groundswell of popular support for the once-again-new idea of sensibly limited government.

    • Watch for a rise in the Tenth Amendment movement in America as an increasing number of Americans fight back against what they see as a dangerous expansion of the power of the federal government. With the TSA in your pants and the FDA in your greenhouse, there's no telling what part of your life Big Brother wants to control next. America was founded on the idea of limited government, and I believe we'll see a powerful, passionate movement that seeks to bring the federal government back down to its Constitutionally-mandated size (which is a fraction of its current size and scope). The Tenth Amendment, by the way, specifically reserves all rights not specifically granted to the federal government to be held by the States or the People. The Constitution, for the record, never granted the federal government the right to run a health care system, nor to give away the power to coin money to a private banking cartel, nor to inspect your backyard food production operation that you use to produce jams and jellies for the local farmers' market.

    Specific short-term predictions

    • Expect a new Big Government war on internet freedom. Mostly due to the Wikileaks releases, governments around the world are going to desperately attempt to police the internet and clamp down on web-based free speech. This will likely result in an online war between the "empire" (the USA and the UN) and the "rebel alliance" (the internet hackers such as 'anonymous').

    • By the end of 2012, I predict significant food supply disruptions in North America, brought about either by radical weather affecting crop yields or perhaps the invasion of disease indirectly caused by the over-use of pesticides or GMOs. The number of people in America struggling to feed themselves and their families will rise along with food prices (see next). This will inevitably result in a huge increase in crime (burglaries, thefts) at precisely the same time that cities are laying off local law enforcement officers due to budgetary restrictions.

    • Expect to see food prices climb with alarming speed over the next two years. Wheat is already on the rise, and even meat prices will surge up sharply before the end of 2012. While food won't disappear, it will become significantly more expensive, causing more people to shift to subsidized foods (corn, sugar, etc.) which also happen to be some of the worst foods for your health. GMOs are cheap in the short run... until you get your hospital bill.

Oil prices will also trend sharply upwards over the next two years. We will almost certainly see oil at $150 per barrel and possibly even at $200 for a brief time. This will of course impact food prices, the transportation industry and virtually the entire economy.

    • By late 2012, the economic downfall of the United States will have accelerated, and the inevitable collapse of the U.S. dollar will by that time have become apparent to virtually everyone. The ability of the U.S. Treasury to auction its debt will drop sharply as ratings institutions either downgrade U.S. debt or publicly threaten to.

    Long-term predictions

    • Over the next decade, I predict a disappearing "health middle class" and a great divide between the healthy and the sick. The healthy, you see, are consuming superfoods, getting sunshine on their skin and taking nutritional supplements on a daily basis. The unhealthy are eating processed foods, taking prescription medications and following the advice of their ignorant doctors even if it kills them. There will be fewer people of "average" health in America in the coming years. The masses will gravitate toward disease and sickness while the informed few (such as NaturalNews readers, raw food vegans, superfood fans and so on) will get healthier and more productive.

    • By 2025, the FDA as we know it today will be ancient history, and a new era of food freedom and health freedom will have swept across the former United States of America. Marijuana will become a key crop for raising revenue for the states (or the equivalent governing entity), the pharmaceutical industry will have severely downsized, and the scientific censorship of the FDA will have been abandoned to a chapter of the dark history of America. Millions of doctors, oncologists and useless government bureaucrats will find themselves out of work or, in the most extreme cases, subjected to court trials for their crimes against humanity.

    • By 2030, it will become obvious that all those people treated with vaccines, chemotherapy, pharmaceuticals and conventional medical procedures are largely infertile and dying from degenerative disease. Also by this time, those individuals who ate diets largely made of GMOs, processed foods and artificial chemical additives will discover they, too, are infertile and diseased. The dying, diseased people of the western world will look back upon the "age of medical science" with hatred and disbelief, and the vaccines, chemotherapy, mercury fillings, water fluoridation and other poisons that are common in our world today will, by 2030, be written up in the history books as examples of humanity's incredible capacity for self-deception and faulty thinking, even in the realm of so-called "science."

Health Ranger predictions are already coming true

Many of the predictions I made a year ago have already come true, by the way. These include:

    • China unleashes armies of corporate espionage hackers onto western nations (now verified as true through Wikileaks cables)

    • A worldwide shortage of rare earth metals (already under way)

    • Food supply disruptions (disruptions have been widely reported throughout 2010)

    • Honeybee population collapse spreads to other species (bats are now threatened, too)

    • Weather patterns become increasingly radicalized (also widely reported in 2010)

    • Medical imaging scandal unfolds as older patients begin to show serious health damage from radiation via mammograms, CT scans and more (widely reported in medical journals in 2010)

    • War on health freedom ramps up, targeting raw milk, homeopathy, herbs and supplements (major raids have been conducted this year on food co-ops and raw milk producers)

    • New attempts are made to destroy internet freedom (the UN is now planning to roll out internet police, and the U.S. customs department has been seizing websites for the last several months)

These are just some of the many predictions I made one year ago. Many more will yet come true in the years ahead. Overall, by the way, I remain optimistic about our future, if only because it is evident that by living through suffering, oppression and slavery, enough members of the human race will finally see the importance of health freedom and take the necessary action to regain it and defend it for generations to come.

In the grand experiment of nations and civilizations now playing out across our tiny planet, those nations which forget the importance of health and freedom are doomed to eventually destroy themselves. Only those nations which recognize freedom and invest in the health of their citizens have any sustainable future. And one day, such a nation of truly free people will undoubtedly rise from the ashes of whatever is left after the current global miscalculations run their course.

Inspiration to Action: How Food, Inc. Prompted One Family to Start a 30-Acre Farm

    27 April 2011

    (Photo c/o Rosie Bolin)

A week ago, we noticed a comment our Food, Inc. Facebook wall from a commentor called "Road to Simplicity":
We were VERY inspired by Food, inc to the point that we moved to a 30 acre farm and started growing/raising our own food....
We love stories like these. We followed up.
The commentor, Rosie Bolin, is a mother, a farmer, and—in our eyes—an activist. She has a great story to tell, and she shared it with us so we could share it with you. Prepare to be inspired. You might just find yourself digging into the dirt any day now...
TakePart: You told us that Food, Inc inspired you move to a 30-acre farm and start growing and raising your own food. Was seeing the movie the first time you had thought about farming your own food?
My husband, Lee, grew up on a small farm in the foothills of the North Carolina mountains. His family has farmed in that part of the state for countless generations. He really wanted no part of that life, went to college, moved to the “Big City” and became an engineer with IBM.
I, conversely, grew up in a more urban setting, and always wanted to be a farmer’s wife. I won, and Lee has discovered that you can’t escape your roots, which is a good thing, because they not only keep you grounded, they nourish you.
So…we had decided, prior to watching Food, Inc. that we wanted to seriously simplify our lives. We wanted to move out of the suburbs, but were on the slow train. After we watched Food, Inc., we hopped onto the bullet train and made the move.

Which parts of “Food, Inc” affected you the most?

We knew about animal cruelty on factory farms, but the only way we, personally, were making a stand was not eating at KFC. After seeing the film, we just couldn’t, in good conscience, support an industry that so mistreated animals.
Joel Salatin [one of the farmers in Food, Inc.] said that his animals are happy every day but the last. That’s what we wanted. The other thing that horrified us was learning about GMOs [genetically modified organisms], specifically Monsanto. We are so impressed at the public outcry that was inspired by Food, Inc. shedding such a prominent light on this issue.

What was it like transitioning to farm life? How did you get started?
We did a great deal of research. We homeschool our teenage boys, so we had them do presentations on raising animals. We bought several homesteading books, joined a local homesteading meet-up, and scoured the internet for any information we could find.
We started very slowly, adding just one type of farm animal at a time. Our first was a bull calf. Because Holsteins are primarily dairy cows, we found that buying young bulls is very inexpensive. Ours was only $75. Grass feeding is pretty much free, so that has been an amazing return on investment.

The Bolins managed to get most of their materials for building and landscaping for free on Craigslist. Talk about sustainable! (Photo c/o Rosie Bolin)

Next, we got goats. We found that there were many goats, mostly male, that were free or cheap on Craigslist. We got two females and four males that way. We mated both of the females; one gave birth to two kids in March, and the other is due in July. Whew, what an adventure that has been. Goats are fun, hysterical to watch, and very friendly, but they sure have a tendency to get themselves into trouble!! If there’s a fence, they’ll either leap it, or get stuck trying!
Our chickens came next. We bought seven-week-old Rhode Island Red and Buff Orpington pullets. We love the chickens and keep them in fully-enclosed tractors, which we move every two weeks so they are both protected from predators and have constant access to fresh grass.

We also feed them table scraps. When we toss in their favorites, one piece at a time, it’s like a football game. One will grab it and run across the yard, dodging the others. There is, inevitably, at least one turnover, where the competition will grab it and run the opposite direction. We find this much more entertaining than actual football.
This month we’ve added 20 more pullets and 6 breeder rabbits, which are also housed in mobile tractors. We should have our first baby bunnies in two weeks. Can’t wait for the show!
As for gardens, last year we were way too ambitious and planted two acres of everything. We didn’t have irrigation (other than me with a hose), so I ended up watering, by hand, for two hours every night during one of the hottest, driest summers in North Carolina history.

'Our big lesson was to shift to a lower-impact, higher-yield method, so we’re moving most of the crops to aquaponics.' (Photo c/o Rosie Bolin)

Sadly, the two hours weren’t enough, so some of the late crops never came in. While we were thrilled with our tomatoes and cucumbers, we only got a handful of peas and beans, and the 100 pumpkins we planted failed to fruit. Our big lesson was to shift to a lower-impact, higher-yield method, so we’re moving most of the crops to aquaponics.
In July, we plan to start selling our eggs on the property. We’re making educational trails so people can view and learn about the various animals. We have been so inspired to make a positive change that we are anxious to share this journey with others. If people would like to follow our farm online and get tips on simplifying their own lives, they can go to Road to Simplicity on Facebook. The cool thing is, regardless of your living situation, you can incorporate some of the farm into your life.

Paint us a picture of your farm. What does it look like? Which animals do you raise? Which crops?
Our farm was formerly a commercial dairy farm on 30 acres just outside Raleigh, NC. The property was owned by the same family for generations. My favorite outbuilding is an old tobacco barn made from hand-hewn logs cut down on the property. Funny, the previous owners added a stable around the tobacco barn many years later. The stable is about to fall down, but the tobacco barn is still standing strong—a real testament to old-fashioned craftsmanship.
We have two other well-used old barns, two of the most beautiful stocked ponds I’ve ever seen, and acres of rolling field and woods. When I look out my kitchen window while washing dishes, I can see the pond, rabbits, goats, chickens an old pear tree, more birds than I can name, barns that look like they inspired Norman Rockwell, and if I’m lucky, a herd of deer. That’s the payoff, and I wouldn’t want any other job!!
What do your kids think of the change?

They love it. Riley, 13, wants to be a vet, so he really enjoys the animals. Just as they showed Joel Salatin doing on his farm in Food, Inc., we process animals on our property. Riley has taken part in this with curious amazement. Sheesh, talk about a biology lab!
Adam, 16, is much more interested in the gardens and fields. He loves nature photography and spends a great deal of time noticing things in the grass that most of us would pass by.
More importantly, this experience has taught them responsibility and work ethic. It doesn’t matter if you stayed up until 2 a.m. talking to a girl on the phone. When the sun comes up, the animals need food and water. When we first moved here, they complained about how physical, hot and dirty the work was. Now, they brag about their muscles. (Farmers don’t need to join a gym.)
What advice do you have for someone who wants to opt out of the industrial food system and grow their own food?
The internet is an amazing source of information. A lot of it is contradictory, so much of what you learn is through trial and error. If your beans don’t grow this year, try again next year. Life doesn’t happen in half-hour increments, but in seasons. Enjoy them all!
