Defeating Lyme disease with essential oils

    11/18/2024 // News Editors // 370 Views

Tags: #nutrition, alternative medicine, disease treatments, essential oils, healing foods, Lyme disease, nutrients, Super foods, Xpost

Prevention is the best medicine, and essential oils work to both prevent and help control Lyme disease.(Article republished from GreenMedInfo.com)
Northern US coastlines, the Mid-Atlantic, Wisconsin, and Minnesota are areas especially prone to Lyme-carrying ticks, though all states are vulnerable. (2) In order to prepare your family for the possibility of tick bites and prevention of Lyme, consider applying a diluted blend of these essential oils in addition to your typical lemon, eucalyptus and citronella oils, for a varied approach that will keep ticks guessing.
    1. Clove
Citronella is usually the first that comes to mind when we think of bug repellants, because it is included in most store-bought candles and sprays as the go-to bug repellent. For ticks, though, citronella may not be the first go-to.
Case in point, a 2014 study of the effect that citronella and clove oils have on ticks, clove came out on top. While citronella was reasonably effective, clove outperformed it substantially with over 90% efficacy! (3)
DIY Tip: Clove oil can be used in outdoor diffusions where ticks may be prominent, direct sprays, ground/surface treatments, and diluted in topical prevention applications. Try adding 8 drops of clove essential oil per 1 oz of coconut oil and apply throughout your body before hiking and spending time outdoors.
    2. Oregano
Oregano is a popular kitchen herb that has a strong essential oil profile. Known as an antibacterial/antibiotic oil with strong effects on the skin that require dilution, oregano essential oil finds its way into bug control and Lyme prevention, as well.
Sharing major compounds carvacrol and eugenol with clove oil, it has also tested well against ticks in at least one recent study. (4)
As a bonus in topical applications, oregano has antibacterial effects to bring to the table – important when Lyme is a bacteria! Topical applications could give you a head start in warding off Lyme before it has a chance to settle in.
DIY Tip: Because oregano can be harsh on skin, be sure to dilute it very well and use it as part of a larger blend.
    3. Vetiver
Vetiver and citronella are comparable plants with a similar aroma that can be used in similar ways. And, again, like clove, vetiver essential oil seems to be more effective against ticks than citronella.
In tests against ticks and their larvae, vetiver essential oil was tested for its effectiveness. Whether it is because of resistance built up against the more commonly used treatments or whether vetiver has always been this good, vetiver was able to keep ticks at bay even better than standard treatments. (5)
DIY Tip: Mix 30 drops of vetiver in a 16 oz spray bottle with tap water. Spray around the openings to your home (windows, doors, etc.); use diluted topically with clove.
    4. Garlic
If you’ve intentionally eaten garlic to keep the vampires and mosquitoes away, you already know about its potent aromatic effects. Researchers looked into this more closely by extracting the essential oil from garlic bulbs to test against ticks. Upon exposure to garlic essential oil, tick mortality rates were nearly 100%! (6)
DIY Tip: If garlic essential oil is not available, consider including a DIY garlic oil infusion in your ground and surface treatments. And when all else fails, some extra homemade fresh garlic bread is always warranted!
    DIY Lyme Prevention Plan

You can't go unprotected if you’re going to be in areas of high risk and exposure to ticks. With so many oils appearing more effective than commercial options, it seems essential oil formulations are the smarter choice.
Effective Strategy For Fighting Ticks and Lyme Disease

Keep this simple “lotion” of diluted oils on hand to apply on exposed skin whenever tick exposure will be high. Hikers, campers, and others enjoying outdoor activity that will take you into the woods should be considered at risk. Remember that these oils are powerful, so you should keep them away from your eyes and mouth.
    Simply blend:

    • 4 oz carrier oil of choice
    • 40 drops total of a blend of tick-repelling essential oils (vetiver, clove, oregano, ylang ylang, and some citrus for scent balance are all useful)
    • Blend, pour into a glass spritzer bottle, and spray periodically to ankles, arms, etc.

    Treating Lyme with Essential Oils

Sometimes, even when we do all we can, the worst happens. Lyme disease can strike at any time, and you should be prepared to find a physician who can work with you in that worst-case scenario. These doctors are referred to as Lyme Literate, and as Dr. Cindee Gardner pointed out in an interview, they still may not be aware of the range of alternative treatments that are available for Lyme.
In Dr. Gardner’s practice, she uses everything from homeopathy to herbs to essential oils. (7) Some of it is directly connected to Lyme as a bacteria, while a lot of it is related to symptom control. You should find these oils beneficial in your plan of attack:

    • Chamomile for relaxation and mood
    • Vetiver for focus
    • Citrus for antimicrobial as well as energizing effects
    • Various blends of your favorite oils into massages for pain

With the vast variety of symptoms and broad actions of essential oils, the list of symptoms and useful oils could continue on for days. To defeat Lyme disease, simply remember to begin with prevention, seek help promptly if infection is suspected, and use your carefully selected essential oil medicine cabinet.

Prepper supplies: 30 Survival uses for coffee filters

Tuesday, January 17, 2023 by: Zoey Sky
Tags: bugout, coffee filters, Gear, homesteading, off grid, preparedness, prepping, prepping tips, self sufficiency, self-reliance, survival, survival gear
    2,220VIEWS

(Natural News) Non-preppers use coffee filters to make coffee, but preppers know that this useful item is a must-have for your survival stockpile.
If you’re looking for a firestarter or makeshift insulator, stock up on coffee filters and learn about this item’s many survival uses. (h/t to AskAPrepper.com)
    Absorb spills

If you accidentally spill something and you have to clean it in a hurry, place a coffee filter over the spill and blot it up with a paper towel.
A coffee filter is absorbent and it will help soak up the majority of the liquid, which can help prevent clothes or furniture from being ruined.
    Alternative for rags and towels

You can use coffee filters to dust furniture or clean windows instead of rags or towels.
    Apply calamine lotion

If you hate getting calamine lotion all over your hands, place a generous dollop on a coffee filter and use that to apply the lotion to your skin instead. The filter will help absorb any excess lotion so it doesn’t end up on your skin or clothes.
    Bug protection

If you don’t have any bug spray, you can use coffee filters as a makeshift mosquito net.
Poke holes in the center of the filter and wear it over your head like a hood. The tiny holes will keep bugs out while still allowing you to breathe comfortably as you work outdoors.
    Cloth diaper liner

If you use cloth diapers for your baby, use clean coffee filters as a liner. Coffee filters are great liners because they’re cheap, disposable and biodegradable.
Place a filter inside the diaper before putting it on your baby to catch solid waste. When the diaper is dirty, remove the liner and its contents, then wash the diaper.
    DIY bandage

If you don’t have a first aid kit, use coffee filters as bandages or dressings for wounds.
The absorbent nature of the filter will help to soak up blood and other fluids and the paper material will keep the wound clean and protected from infection.
    Dry wet clothing

Place small wet items inside a coffee filter and leave them to dry in the sun or close to a fire to dry out. The coffee filter will help absorb some of the moisture so your clothes dry faster.
    Emergency toilet paper

If you run out of toilet paper, use coffee filters as an alternative. Make sure you dispose of the used coffee filters properly.
    Firestarters

Coffee filters soaked in wax are great DIY firestarters because they light easily and burn for a long time.
To make coffee filter firestarters, soak the filter in wax, let it dry and store it in an airtight container. Keep the container in your bug-out bag or firestarting kit so you can start a fire quickly when SHTF.
    Keep insects out of food

Place a coffee filter over the top of food supplies in your stockpile to keep insects out.
    Keep produce fresh

Line a fruit bowl or vegetable crisper with coffee filters to help keep produce fresh longer. The filters will absorb excess moisture, which helps prevent mold and rot from setting in.
    Keep soil in the pot

Use coffee filters as transient liners for pots full of soil. Line the pot with the filter before adding your soil and plants.
When it’s time to transplant them into a larger pot or into the ground, the filter will prevent the soil from falling out as you work.
    Make a cold compress

Soak a coffee filter in cold water to make a temporary cold compress and apply it to a bruise or insect bite to help reduce swelling.
    Make a funnel

Prevent spills by using a coffee filter to make a funnel.
Cut the bottom off of a coffee filter to make a funnel so you can easily pour powders or liquids into small containers.
    Make an oil lamp

Use coffee filters to make an oil lamp if you need light.
First, take a coffee filter and roll it up. Next, fill a glass jar with some vegetable oil and soak the coffee filter all the way inside.
Light up the filter and you will have light for a few hours.
    Make a pair of gloves

If you need gloves for chores that will make your hands dirty and you don’t have an extra pair, cut two holes near the top of two separate coffee filters large enough for your hands to fit through.
Wear these “gloves” while finishing your task and dispose of them when you’re done.
    Make tea

If you love tea but you’ve run out of tea bags, improvise by using a coffee filter instead.
Place loose tea leaves inside the filter, then secure it with string or a rubber band before steeping it in hot water to make your tea.
    Remove odor

If you spilled ashes on your clothing or in your hair, rub them away with a dry coffee filter.
Coffee filters can also be used to remove unwanted odors like shoes. If you have a pair of shoes that are smelling funky, place one inside a shoe to absorb unpleasant smells.
For a better result, add baking soda inside the coffee filters and secure it with a bit of string or a rubber band.
    Pet food dish

If you need to feed your pet dog but don’t have a pet bowl on hand, use a coffee filter. Just place the food in the center and your pet should be able to eat without making too much of a mess.
You can also use a coffee filter as a pet poop scooper. Bring coffee filters while hiking or taking your dog on a walk to the park so you can easily clean up their poop.
    Portable food wrapper

If you’re going camping and you ran out of sandwich bags, use coffee filters to wrap your food in.
The paper is strong enough to prevent leaks and tears, but lightweight enough that it won’t add too much bulk or weight to your bag.
    To pre-filter water you’ve collected

When SHTF, use a coffee filter to pre-filter the water you collected. Use coffee filters to remove large particles from water before running it through your main water filter.
    Protect skillets from rust

Cast-iron skillets are prone to rusting while in storage.
Place a coffee filter in the bottom of your skillet before storing it for a long time to protect it from rusting.
    Sore throat relief

If you have a sore throat, soak a coffee filter in warm water, then lay it over your throat like a compress. The warmth and moisture from the compress will help to soothe your sore throat.
    Sprout garden seeds

If you want to sprout seeds for your garden, soak the seeds overnight. Next, place them on a coffee filter moistened with water then fold up the filter and place it in a resealable baggie.
    Store garden seeds

Once the gardening season is over, save some seeds from your best-performing plants so you can replant them next year.
Place the seeds on a dry coffee filter and fold it up. Store the filter in an airtight container in a cool, dark place until spring arrives.
    Temporary insulator

If you need a temporary insulator, use coffee filters to insulate your home.
If you have a drafty window or door, cut a coffee filter to size and tape it over the opening to help keep the warm air in and the cold air out.
    Temporary survival straw

Use a clean coffee filter to make a temporary survival straw so you can filter water on the go. Cut the top and bottom off of a coffee filter and roll it into a cone shape.
Cut a small slit in the bottom of the filter and insert one end of a drinking straw. Suck the water up through the straw to drink filtered water wherever you are.
    Trap cooking grease

Top emergency water storage tips for preppers

    11/19/2024 // HRS Editors // 1.3K Views

Emergency water storage might seem simple for non-preppers, especially if they think all it takes is pouring water into big containers. And while it is not complicated, preppers know how to avoid common mistakes so you don't ruin your entire water supply. (h/t to SkilledSurvival.com)
Water is one prep item that's overlooked.
According to a poll of U.S. adults, at least 53 percent don't have at least three days' worth of non-perishable food and water in their homes. This is bad because when disaster strikes, water and power will be the first two resources to shut down.
Humans can survive for a long time without electricity, but they cannot survive long without water.
    Water storage tips

Water storage needs to be protected against viruses, contamination and bacteria, so you must take different measures to protect your water from these threats.
Do not store water in food-grade containers that have previously stored other items. It is difficult to rinse all the sugars and bacteria left over. Trace amounts of sugar or bacteria will taint the water.
Do not store water in cardboard containers. While you can buy bottled water, cardboard containers won't last forever.
Do not store water in metallic containers that aren't stainless steel. Other metals will corrode, and water will go bad. This will result in rusty water that isn't safe for drinking.
Do not store water in containers that cannot be sealed. There are some exceptions, but this is risky because unsealed containers are at risk of contamination. For example, particles from the air, animals and insects can fall into the water.
Do not store water in direct sunlight or heat. Keep all water containers in a shaded, temperature-controlled room if possible. Sunlight, heat and temperature changes are the enemies of long-term water storage and will contribute to spoilage. Additionally, UV rays and heat are hard on plastics. Sometimes, glass can also leach chemicals. (Related: Prepping tips: Stockpiling non-perishable foods and water.)
    Best containers for water storage

Use containers that have tight-fitting lids or caps to prevent contamination from insects, dust or other pollutants.
    Food-grade plastic containers
Plastic is lightweight, durable and cheap. It is also easy to come by and replaceable.
However, plastic also has some disadvantages. Some food scientists have warned that plastic can leach chemicals into water, particularly if the containers are exposed to direct light or heat.
    Plastic bladders
With a large plastic bladder, you can easily store a lot of water in your bathtub when SHTF.
Since a plastic water bladder is sealed, you don't have to worry about contamination. Some bags can hold as much as 100 gallons and can be emptied and packed for easy transportation.
    55-Gallon plastic drums
55-Gallon plastic drums take up a lot of space and are heavy when full, but they also guarantee that you have one of the most reliable ways to store water for a long time.
    Food-grade stainless steel drums
Food-grade stainless steel drums may be the safest bet when it comes to storing water long-term. Steel drums contain no chemicals that can leach into the water.
The drums also protect contents from sunlight, and they are durable. However, steel drums are also the most expensive option.
Where to buy water filters before SHTF

The Health Ranger Store is committed to helping you prepare for any emergency.
That's why we're proud to introduce an assortment of water filters for your water storage systems such as the AquaPail Water Filter and Berkey PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements.
The AquaPail Water Filter is a necessary addition to your emergency supplies. It is the world's only Gravity-Fed Emergency Water Filter with "End of Life" testing. This means that the DuraFlo™ Water Filter used in the AquaPail has been tested and certified by top U.S. independent laboratories to establish the water filter’s "End of Life," or its actual usage capacity.
AquaPail filters do exactly what they say they can do at verified amounts without false claims or exaggerated quantities without proof.
Aquapails are available in three sizes:

    • Small - 1,100 Gallons = Equivalent of one person's total water needs for one year.
    • Medium - 3,300 Gallons = Equivalent to three people's total water needs for one year.
    • Large - 5,500 Gallons = Equivalent to five people's total water needs for one year.

While most water filtration systems remove only some of the many dangerous elements from your drinking water, the AquaPail™ Water Filtration System will remove or deactivate virtually all harmful substances from any non-salt water source.
Within minutes, the AquaPail™ water filter deactivates toxic bacteria, viruses, and cysts (such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia). It can also remove heavy metals.
The Duraflo proprietary filtration method deactivates and removes waterborne microbes from even the most contaminated water source.
Prefilter the contaminant particles as much as possible first, then use the AquaPail™ water filter to remove hydrocarbons, fluoride, chlorine and other harmful substances. The water filter is certified to filter out 99.99 percent of viruses for up to 550 gallons; and safely filter out 99.9999 percent bacteria and 99.99 percent of giardia and cryptosporidium for up to 700 gallons from highly contaminated water.
This provides clean, purified drinking water for yourself when SHTF.
AquaPail™ Water Filters are perfect for emergency preparedness, camping, boating, hunting and all outdoor activities.
You can also use Berkey PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements (Set of 2 Filters) to reduce fluoride and arsenic in your home water supply.
    Fluoride
Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gallons per minute (GPM) per cubic foot of media.
Results of ‹1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction).
    Arsenic
This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions and arsenic cations.
    Replacement
Under normal conditions, it is recommended that each set of two PF-2 elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons.
The Berkey Light™ is 2.5 gallons therefore the PF-2 filters should be replaced after 400 refills. If the system is refilled about one time per day, the PF-2s should be replaced annually, if the system is refilled about twice per day, the PF-2s should be replaced about every six months.
Actual capacity is dependent on the presence of other competing contaminants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals may reduce the capacity and efficiency of the elements.

Tarragon: Versatile ancient herb with science-backed health benefits

    11/19/2024 // Olivia Cook // 960 Views

Tags: alternative medicine, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidants, blood sugar, brain health, digestion, fight obesity, food cures, food science, functional food, goodfood, goodhealth, goodmedicine, heart health, herbal medicine, Herbs, natural antibiotics, natural cures, natural health, natural medicine, natural remedy, nutrients, pain relief, tarragon

Tarragon, often called the "king of herbs," is celebrated worldwide for its unique flavor and health benefits.
While it is a staple in many kitchens, adding a subtle sweetness and licorice-like taste to dishes, it has also been valued for its medical properties for centuries. Whether fresh or dried, tarragon is more than just a culinary delight – it is a powerhouse of nutrients and health-supporting compounds.
    Supports overall health

Tarragon is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a great addition to a balanced diet. It is an excellent source of manganese, which supports bone health and brain function, iron, which helps transport oxygen throughout the body, and potassium, which is vital for maintaining healthy heart, muscle and nerve function.
Tarragon is also rich in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins A, C and B vitamins, including riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6) and folate (B9). Additionally, it provides dietary fiber and is low on calories – making it a nutrient-packed choice for health-conscious individuals.
Helps reduce risk of chronic diseases

Tarragon contains flavonoids, such as isorhamnetin, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin and their glycosides, which are known for their powerful antioxidant effects. Additional flavonoids like naringenin and pinocembrin contribute to the herb's anti-inflammatory properties.
The phenolic acids in tarragon, mainly caffeic, chlorogenic acid and vanillic acid, also serve as potent antioxidants that help fight free radicals – reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
    Helps balance blood sugar levels

Tarragon may support healthy blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. In one animal study in Phytomedicine, tarragon extract reduced blood glucose levels by 20 percent. Another study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that individuals taking tarragon before meals experienced steadier blood sugar throughout the day. For those managing blood sugar concerns, tarragon could be a valuable addition to a balanced diet.
    Boosts appetite

For those experiencing appetite loss, whether due to age, illness or stress, tarragon might be helpful. Research suggests that tarragon can lower levels of leptin, a hormone that makes you feel full, thus gently encouraging you to eat more. This effect is beneficial for individuals who struggle to maintain adequate nutrition.
    Helps ease pain

A study published in Clinical Rheumatology divided participants with joint pain into groups receiving either low doses, high doses of tarragon extract or a placebo. Interestingly, smaller doses of tarragon extract worked better. This suggests that tarragon may be a natural alternative for managing mild pain when consumed in moderation.
    Enhances thyroid function

The thyroid gland regulates energy and metabolism by producing hormones like thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Tarragon has been shown to stimulate thyroid activity in animal studies, supporting healthy hormone levels and metabolic balance.
    Fights harmful bacteria

Tarragon's antibacterial properties are another compelling reason to add this herb to your meals. In research focused on food safety in the Iranian Journal of Microbiology, cheese treated with tarragon showed significantly fewer harmful bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which are notorious for causing food-borne illnesses.
Helps build muscle and prevent obesity

Certain varieties of tarragon, such as the Russian type, show promise in preventing obesity and enhancing muscle growth. Studies in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research indicate that tarragon improves the absorption of creatine – a compound vital for muscle energy and recovery. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or simply aiming to stay active, tarragon could complement your health goals.
    Promotes digestive health

Tarragon has been shown to stimulate bile production, which helps break down fats and supports overall digestion. Whether enjoyed as a tea or sprinkled on your meals, tarragon might ease digestive troubles and promote gut health.
    Reduces inflammation

Chronic inflammation can contribute to a host of health issues – from joint pain to heart disease. Tarragon contains compounds that reduce cytokines – proteins that trigger inflammation in the body. Animal studies in International Anesthesiology Clinics have demonstrated its ability to ease inflammation – making it a potential ally in combating inflammatory conditions.
    Supports better sleep

A study in mice in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine found that tarragon extract encouraged relaxation – suggesting it may have calming properties. While more human research is needed, sipping on tarragon tea before bed could be a simple way to unwind after a long day.
    Supports heart health

Studies in the Annual Review of Nutrition suggest that tarragon when combined with other nutritional herbs and spices, supports cardiovascular wellness. Its anti-inflammatory properties and nutrient profile, including potassium, make it a heart-friendly choice.
    Supports brain health

Tarragon's manganese plays a key role in neuronal health and brain function and its antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid and luteolin, help protect brain cells from damage. Some studies also suggest that tarragon may reduce stress and improve resistance to depression.

How to grow your own survival garden

    11/21/2024 // HRS Editors // 770 Views

Tags: backyard gardening, emergency preparedness, emergency stockpile, food freedom, food independence, food supply, gardening, gardening tips, green living, home gardening, homesteading, how-to, off grid, preparedness, prepper, prepping, prepping tips, survival

Gardening is beneficial for preppers because it gives access to fresh produce grown without harmful pesticides and other chemicals. It's also a great hobby if you want to start preserving excess fruits and vegetables for selling or to add to your stockpile. (h/t to Almanac.com)
Choose the right location for your garden

Here are some tips for choosing a good gardening site:
    Find a sunny spot
This is crucial because many vegetables need at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Some, particularly leafy vegetables, will tolerate some shade.
Chose a stable location that's not windy
Avoid locations that receive strong winds that could knock over young plants or prevent bees and other pollinators from doing their job.
You also want to avoid a location that receives too much foot traffic or floods easily.
    Plant in nutrient-rich soil
The soil feeds your plants, and if you grow crops on thin, nutrient-poor soil, your plants will be poor and unhealthy.
Add organic matter to grow strong and healthy plants.
Plant in soil that drains well and doesn't stay wet
If you only have poorly draining soil where water pools, plant your crops in a raised bed or raised row for improved drainage.
Wet soil means wet roots, which can result in rotted roots.
If you are stuck with rocky soil, till and remove the rocks because they will interfere with root growth and produce weaker plants. (Related: Home gardening tips: Guide to harvesting seeds from fruits and vegetables for propagation.)
Start with a small and manageable plot

If starting a garden feels overwhelming, make things easier for yourself and start with a small garden that will be manageable, especially if you are a beginner.
Plan your garden before you plant anything, and start small. Focus on plants that are easy to grow and that you are sure your family will eat.
When planting in the ground, having a 10x10-foot garden (100 square feet) should be manageable. Choose at least three to five of your favorite vegetables and buy three to five plants of each one.
For a raised bed, a 4x4-foot or 4x8-foot one is a good size for a beginner.
After you decide on how big your garden is going to be, leave spacious paths that give you access to your plants so you can weed and harvest. You should be able to easily reach the row or bed center without stepping on the soil.
    Grow the right vegetables

Beginners should start by growing vegetables that are productive. If you're not sure, call your state's Cooperative Extension Service to confirm what plants grow best in your area.
Here are some of the easiest vegetables to grow for beginners. Most are best started by seeds planted directly into the soil unless specified:

    • Beets
    • Cabbage
    • Carrots
    • Chard, kale, or spinach
    • Garlic
    • Green beans
    • Lettuce
    • Onions
    • Peas
    • Peppers (by transplant, i.e. small nursery plant)
    • Potatoes
    • Radishes
    • Squash
    • Tomatoes (by transplant, i.e. small nursery plant)
    • Zucchini

Plant flowers, such as marigolds, to naturally discourage pests and attract pollinators to your garden.
When choosing vegetables, choose crops that your family likes to eat. You should also be realistic about how many vegetables your family will eat when SHTF.
Don't overplant because this can make you feel overwhelmed if you need to take care of too many plants.
Learn how to care for plants throughout the growing season.
Lastly, use high-quality seeds so you don't waste time and money on your garden.
