The GOP Must Embrace Ron Paul or Lose

Political campaigns typically serve one of two purposes: 1. To win elections. 2. To build coalitions. The former is as important as the latter precisely because it is typically impossible to win elections without first building coalitions. Barry Goldwater was no doubt disappointed when he lost. Ronald Reagan was no doubt happy Goldwater ran.

In 2008, Ron Paul ignited a movement. Between then and 2012, Paul has amassed an army. Paul and his supporters’ growing numbers, whether in actual warm bodies or vote totals, have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled depending on how you gauge it. Paul and his movement now influence the Republican Party, it’s direction and it’s rhetoric in a way for more significant than anyone ever expected. And this has been true since the beginning of this election—where when many thought Paul might win Iowa and other early contests, they attempted to slander Dr. Paul or even make voters fear him (“he can’t win,” “he’s too extreme,” etc.). If that didn’t work, they tried to ignore him, with the media talking incessantly about eventual 2012 nobodies like Tim Pawlenty after the Iowa Straw Poll—even though Paul almost beat Michelle Bachmann for the top spot.

Whether they have feared Paul or tried to ignore him, the message of constitutional liberty has so pierced America’s political discourse that at this point it simply will not go away no matter how much Paul’s critics would like it to.

What the Republican Party is desperate for is a coherent conservative message that can excite its base. What the Republican Party is desperate for is a substantively conservative message that can also have broad appeal to independents and disenfranchised Democrats. What the Republican Party is desperate for is a candidate with a message that can beat Barack Obama.

What the Republican Party is desperate for is Ron Paul, who has built a movement, stuck to his conservative principles, appeals to independents more than any other Republican, and who defeats Obama in most head-to-head polls. In being the only candidate to represent the oldest constitutional ideas imaginable, Paul also represents the freshest and most promising political brand on the scene today.

What Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are now fighting over is who might get to be the leader of the shell of a GOP left behind in George W. Bush’s wake. All of these guys are yesterday’s news, as is their version of the Republican Party—no new ideas, no respect for the Constitution, nothing but sheer partisan bluster. As 2008 proved, Americans want nothing to do with that Republican Party anymore. No matter what else happens in this election, that GOP is through.

The 18-30 year olds who vote for Ron Paul overwhelmingly in every contest right now point the way toward the future. The coalition Ron Paul has built represents the only coherent philosophy the GOP even has at this point, and it represents the only conservative philosophy capable of winning elections with broad support.

If the GOP wants to win in 2012—hell, if the GOP wants to win period—it better learn to embrace the popular limited government philosophy of Paul. The biggest losers in this election are the ones you will probably continue to hear the most about in this election. But the biggest winner is already Ron Paul—whose influence and movement you will continue to hear about today, tomorrow and in the future.

BREAKING: Romney wins Wyoming caucuses, CNN projects

    Posted by CNN Political Unit

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has won the Wyoming caucuses, CNN projects.

Based on straw-poll results compiled and released by the Wyoming Republican Party, Romney won 39% of the votes cast in straw polls conducted at county-level caucuses.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum came in second with 32% of the straw poll vote, followed by Texas Congressman Ron Paul with 21% and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 8%.
The delegate count may be closer. Of the 26 delegates at stake, CNN estimates Romney will pick up 10 delegates, while Santorum will take in nine delegates, Paul will receive six, and Gingrich one.
    ---------------------------------------
But only 2,000 people participated? Less densely populated state, but still, that's less than what Dr. Paul is regularly attracting at just one campaign rally or townhall these days, dang it!
    YES! Beat Grinch, again.o)

But really? 32% for Frothy X( Come on America! Really???

Mitt Romney won Wyoming’s Republican presidential precinct caucuses Wednesday, a non-binding straw poll that gives him a third victory in two days.
The caucuses had been running from Feb. 9 through this week, and with voting finally closed Mr. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had 39 percent of the 2108 votes cast. That topped former Sen. Rick Santorum’s 32 percent, Rep. Ron Paul’s 21 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s 8 percent.
Delegates selected at the caucuses are not bound to vote for the winners in subsequent county and state conventions, so the actual breakdown of delegates each candidate will win toward the nomination in Tampa in August won’t be known until later.

    WASHINGTON | Wed Feb 29, 2012 11:44pm EST
(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won his party's caucus in Wyoming, CNN reported on Wednesday after the last of straw polls in the thinly populated mountain state.

CNN quoted the Wyoming Republican Party as saying Romney emerged from a month-long series of county-level straw polls with 39 percent of the votes cast.

The cable network said former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania came in second with 33 percent of the straw-poll vote. Congressman Ron Paul of Texas followed with 20 percent and Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, came in fourth with 8 percent...

Ron Paul Responds To Comments By Defense Secretary

Ron Paul Responds To Comments By Defense Secretary

“THE RECENT STATEMENTS BY DEFENSE SECRETARY PANETTA ONCE AGAIN ILLUSTRATE THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S BLATANT DISREGARD FOR THE RULE OF LAW AND OUR U.S. CONSTITUTION”

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Today Congressman and 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul issued the following statement in response to comments by Obama Defense Secretary Leon Panetta regarding military options in Syria. See comments below.

“Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s recent statements once again illustrate the Obama administration’s blatant disregard for the rule of law and our Constitution.

“For President Obama’s head of the Defense Department to state that international permission, rather than congressional approval, is what would be needed as a legal basis to initiate a no-fly zone over Syria flies in the face of the guidelines established by our Founders.

“There is no issue more serious than war. And make no mistake, establishing a ‘no-fly zone’ is in itself an act of war.

“Our Founders understood that waging war is not something that should be taken lightly, which is why Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution gives Congress – not the President – the authority to declare war.

“This was meant to be an important check on presidential power. The last thing the Founders wanted was an out-of-control Executive Branch engaging in unnecessary and unpopular wars without so much as a congressional debate.

“But such actions should no longer come as a surprise. During the conflict in Libya last year, we saw exactly what this President thinks of following the rule of law. President Obama consulted NATO, the United Nations, and the Arab League for permission and authorization to use US military force against Libya. But he utterly ignored the one body that has the legal authority to grant that permission—the U.S. Congress. That was, and still is, unacceptable.

“This is a complete 180 from what we once heard when Obama was seeking the presidency, as he spoke passionately about the abuses of the Bush Administration in violating the War Powers Act. But, like many candidates, the rhetoric did not match the disappointing reality of what he would do as President.

“I have fought my entire political career for greater transparency, greater accountability, and strict adherence to the Constitution. If elected President, I pledge to always maintain the sovereignty of the United States and remain faithful to our rule of law.”

I currently am in the US Military and due to the lack of sense this country continually demonstrates, i'm leaving this country as soon as my contract is up. This country is on the wrong path and I'm tired of explaining it. Day in and day out I try to enlighten people, few takers... It's just not worth it anymore, good luck America.

Ron Paul’s Vermont Performance Shows Path to Victory

In a recent post, I made the point that Ron Paul has the only consistently conservative message that can rally the GOP but also that appeals to independents and disaffected Democrats. Paul supporter Mindy Wren of Vermont says her state’s election results were proof of this. In an email to me, Mindy wrote:

I couldn’t agree more with your post today that the GOP must embrace Ron Paul or lose in November – i would like to point to my home state of Vermont as a prime example of this in action.

As you may know, Vermont exceeded expectations on Super Tuesday with an incredibly strong second place finish for Dr. Paul (25% when media was predicting 14%)so how did Vermont achieve this? Our incredibly well organized grassroots movement was able to motivate Independents and disaffected Democrats, along with more ‘traditional’ Republicans, to choose Ron Paul.

Please also see this article from VTDigger on the Vermont results and why Ron Paul did so well vs Romney… From the VTDigger article:

“Exit polls show that about 49 percent of the presidential primary voters were Republican, 41 percent were independents and 10 percent were Democrats..”

In my opinion, Vermont is a case study for your point that the Republicans need a candidate who appeals to independents.

I urge you to use the Vermont example to illustrate the incredible power of your point, that the Republicans ignore the Independent vote at their own peril.

Mindy is right. Romney will continue to have problems rallying the Republican base and Santorum and Gingrich simply do not attract independents.

Some have observed that Ron Paul might have an easier time in the general election against Obama than he’s had in the GOP primary. I think there’s some truth to this and the Republican Party better get the message before it’s too late.
