Former CIA Agent in Charge of bin Laden Unit Endorses Ron Paul

Foreign policy and national security expert Michael Scheuer regards Paul as the presidential candidate best able to keep America strong and secure

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul was endorsed by the CIA’s former lead agent in charge of tracking Osama bin Laden. The endorsement was made in a recent column Mr. Scheuer published on his website.

The former high-ranking intelligence officer Scheuer and the 12-term Congressman from Texas, both with decades of experience working on and witnessing the costly interventionist foreign policy of the past decades, agree that a foreign policy that puts America first keeps America safest.

The endorsement by Michael Scheuer is certain to cause a ripple effect of discussion throughout the political establishment, especially in foreign policy circles where policymakers promote endless U.S. military involvement and subsidization of global security as the solution to conflicts often having an unclear connection to U.S. national security. An endlessly interventionist foreign policy like the one practiced by the Obama administration is certain to result in bankruptcy and increased hostility toward the U.S., a prediction Mr. Scheuer and Dr. Paul both make and endeavor to share with the American public.

“We’re pleased to have the endorsement of Michael Scheuer, who is the world’s leading expert on the notorious terrorist Osama bin Laden and who like Ron Paul understands the connection between U.S military adventurism and emerging threats against America,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“Michael Scheuer understands that only Dr. Paul will put our national security first and stop the foreign wars and nation building. Our campaign is very proud to have his support,” said Mr. Benton.

Mr. Scheuer is a former CIA intelligence officer, American blogger, historian, foreign policy critic, and political analyst. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Peace and Security Studies. Throughout his 22-year tenure with the CIA,he served as the Chief of the Bin Laden Issue Station (aka “Alec Station”), from 1996 to 1999, the Osama bin Laden tracking unit at the Counterterrorist Center. He then worked again as Special Advisor to the Chief of the bin Laden unit from September 2001 to November 2004.

In Case You Missed It: Ron Paul a ‘Rock Star’ at West Des Moines High School Rally

Rock the Caucus’ attendees greet Dr. Paul and by applause judge him to be their favorite
ANKENY, Iowa – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul got rock star treatment at a ‘Rock the Caucus’ youth rally held today in West Des Moines. The 12-term Congressman from Texas addressed 800 caucus-eligible seniors and juniors at Valley High School.

The Des Moines Register’s Mary Stegmeir gets it spot-on when she says the energy and admiration for Paul were appreciable.

West Des Moines, Ia. — Ron Paul enjoyed a rock star reception this morning during a get-out-the-vote rally at Valley High School in West Des Moines.

Throngs of reporters snapped photos and yelled out questions as he made his way into the school’s gymnasium. Once inside, the students offered the 76-year-0ld congressman their warmest welcome of the day.

Roughly 800 juniors and seniors gathered clapped and cheered for the Paul, who briefly sported a pair of shades. Chris Moody, a political reporter with Yahoo! News tweeted this gem: “Iowa HS girl on Ron Paul when he enters rally: ‘He’s got his glasses on. Like a BOSS.’”

U.S. Congressman Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and the sons of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also addressed students at this morning’s rally — but were not treated to as enthusiastic of a welcome.

Paul had traded in his signature suit and tie for slacks and a button-down navy blue shirt. He also departed briefly from his standard stump speech.

“I’m wondering, does anyone here know the name Kelly Clarkson,” Paul started out by asking.

The congressman went on to tell students that the former American Idol contestant had recently endorsed him.

“I have to admit, I didn’t know a whole lot about her,” he said. “But I do know that our supporters were so enthusiastic about that, that they went out and bumped up the sales of her records by 600 percent.”

From there, Paul returned to the key policy points that have propelled his front-runner status in Iowa. The congressman said he would bring American troops home from Afghanistan and end “run-away inflation.”

Paul asserts that the Federal Reserve has over-produced U.S. currency. He told students today that because dollar bills are not backed by silver or gold, “the value of the money goes down, and the prices go up” when more currency floods the market.

“If you can destroy the money, you can then destroy the economy, and that’s what we have been doing,” Paul said.

College tuition rates have “skyrocketed” not because the actual price of higher education has increased, but “because the value of the money has gone down,” he said.

“And young people know this — they’ve studied it, they’re looking at Austrian economics and they are looking at the Federal Reserve system,” Paul said. “The business cycle can be understood by understanding monetary policy and the Federal Reserve.”

Paul’s case for fiscal restraint connected with 18-year-old Jacob Ogden, who said he started supporting Paul after seeing him in the cycle’s first televised GOP debate. He agrees with Paul that the Federal Reserve system should be eliminated, and replaced the gold standard.

“I just think he has some really strong ideas, and what he’s planning, I think he can accomplish in the time frame he’s set,” said the senior from Clive, who will caucus for Paul tonight. “We’ve been doing the same thing for a long time. We need a change and I think he’s the guy that can do it and turn us around.”

Paul spoke to the students for about 10 minutes. Because of the large number of media members clustered around him, it took another 10 minutes for the Texan to make his way out of the building.

A group of 20 to 25 supporters waited outside the school to get a glimpse of Paul. They held campaign signs and chanted the candidate’s name as staffers escorted him into a white SUV.

The congressman will spend the rest of today doing interviews and relaxing until tonight’s big event, staff members said.

Hundreds of media, tourists and voters at Paul event

    11:25 AM, Jan. 2, 2012

Hordes of journalists and flocks of political tourists have joined Iowa voters waiting to see Ron Paul speak this morning in Des Moines.

The congressman — along with his son U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky — have five campaign stops planned today.

He is expected to speak momentarily at the Marriott ballroom in downtown Des Moines.

Ben Bryan, of Waukee, said he thinks the big crowd gathered at the hotel bodes well for Paul, who recent polls show is a frontrunner in the Hawkeye State.

Political experts and several Republican party members have discounted the congressman’s campaign in recent weeks, saying that his foreign policy views are too far outside the GOP mainstream.

But Bryan, who caucuses for Paul at the Iowa Straw Poll in August, said that reading of the race doesn’t mesh with the colossal crowds the congressman draws in Iowa.

“I think he’s going to get first or second in Iowa, I think the polls are showing that,” said the 28-year-old, who works for the IT company in West Des Moines. “I think past caucuses have shown that if you can win an early state, you’ve got a shot at other states down the road.”

Ron Paul Campaign Airs Final New Hampshire TV Ad ‘Believe’

Ad features prominent Republican surrogates such as State Sens. Andy Sanborn and Ray White

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign announced today that it will begin airing its final television ad ‘Believe’ in the key early voting state of New Hampshire.

The 60-second ad will run beginning today on broadcast and cable television statewide in New Hampshire, and on broadcast television in the greater Boston market. The ad features prominent Granite State surrogates such as political activists and leaders including state Sens. Andy Sanborn (R-Henniker) and Ray White (R-Bedford), both of whom have endorsed Ron Paul for the presidency.

A key feature of the ad is New Hampshire politicians and luminaries condemning the outsize growth of the federal government – calling is “overtaxing” and “overspending” – alongside declarations that the upcoming election is about trust. The ad then presents Ron Paul as an honest and consistent candidate, and the sole alternative to flip-floppers responsible for the costly mistakes of the past. The ad also showcases, in the words of its subjects, the strengths of Ron Paul’s ‘Plan to Restore America.’

“Ron Paul is surging in New Hampshire and is in it to win it. We have a first-class organization and tremendous support from a state where his message of personal and economic liberty resonates well. This ad will serve as the closing argument for why Ron Paul is the only authentic conservative in this race, and the only one capable of bringing authentic change to Washington,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

    Consistent Conservative Ron Paul

Today is the Iowa Caucus. Throughout this election there has been a lot of talk about who is a “consistent conservative.” The following is from a column I wrote in April at The American Conservative:

In 2012, GOP primary voters will generally find a field of candidates willing to bash the White House for basically doing the same things these same candidates once defended a Republican president doing. In fact, most potential 2012 candidates will be as guilty of contributing to big government as the president they’ll criticize. Mitt Romney gave us the blueprint for government-run healthcare. Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich gave Republican support for cap and trade. Rick Santorum ran cover for Bush’s entire statist agenda by touting (President Bush’s) alleged social conservatism. Adding ideological insult to injury, most of these candidates still promote an astronomically expensive foreign policy while they simultaneously and contradictorily claim we must cut spending. By and large, these candidates are conservative in rhetoric only, not their records, as has been the case with most Republican presidential candidates for decades.
    That is, again, except one.

During the periods when conservatives find themselves not defending big government Republicans and instead choose to stress the need for limited government and constitutional fidelity, they echo the sentiments of Ron Paul. The difference is Paul never changes his sentiment. When conservatives are not defending big government Republicans and instead choose to talk about the need to eliminate debt and deficits, they are repeating the philosophy of Ron Paul. The difference is Paul never changes his philosophy.

Paul’s conservative consistency remains true, even when—and perhaps especially when—his fellow conservatives disagree with him. When conservatives attack Paul for his non-interventionist foreign policy views, the Texas congressman is quick to remind them that it is mathematically impossible to reduce the debt or deficits without addressing Pentagon spending. Cutting NPR, Planned Parenthood and earmarks will do nothing to effectively reduce the debt, no matter how much each might excite conservatives emotionally. Likewise, ignoring the need for military spending cuts will continue to help sustain and grow the debt, no matter how emotionally attached some conservatives are in their support for maintaining the status quo…

Many conservatives draw a battle line between Republicans and Democrats. Paul draws his line between those who support limited government and those in both parties who consider it unlimited.

Indeed, Ron Paul is the conservative constant in US politics. To the extent that the American Right is consistently conservative, it is generally in line with Paul. To the extent that the American Right gets distracted from conservative principles—typically in the name of Republican partisanship or some emotional attachment to a particular aspect of statism conservatives generally like—it finds itself at war with Paul…

With an overarching concern for limiting government and eliminating the debt, the now widespread conservative condemnations of “Keynesian economics” and attacks on Ben Bernanke and the Federal Reserve would’ve been unthinkable in 2008. Today, more Americans than ever seem willing to accept substantive entitlement reform and even oppose raising the debt ceiling, reflecting popular sentiments noticeably more radical than anything that could have been conceivable just a few years ago. Not all conservatives are in agreement with Paul’s foreign policy views, but they are significantly more open to them, especially within the context of criticizing a Democratic president’s seemingly foolish interventions and the absurdity of borrowing money from China to pay for them.

Heading into 2012, Paul’s poll numbers equal or exceed those of the perceived major potential candidates, his fundraising abilities equal or exceed those of the same candidates and the once perennial political outsider has now become a household name. More importantly, when it comes to the issues—most conservatives and perhaps most Americans are finding themselves increasingly in agreement with Paul.

Ron Paul is the conservative constant in American politics. In 2012 and beyond, may there be more Americans willing to be as consistently conservative.

EXCLUSIVE: Ron Paul May Have Just Secretly Won Iowa

    Grace Wyler|Jan. 3, 2012, 11:51 PM|32,144|33

    Ron Paul
may have officially come in third in tonight's Iowa caucuses, but if his organizational strategy went off as planned, it is possible that the Texas Congressman is actually the real winner of the state's Republican nominating contest.

Senior advisors for Paul's coalitions team told Business Insider this week that the campaign's organizational strategy was focused not only on getting as many votes as they can, but in making sure that their volunteers stuck around after the voting to make sure that they were nominated as delegates to the county's Republican convention — the first step towards being appointed as a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

That's because Iowa's Republican caucuses are actually non-binding — it's technically just a straw poll. The only thing that will get Paul's — or any other candidate's — Iowa supporters to Tampa next year is if they stuck around and volunteered, or were elected, as delegates.

Sydney Hay, a senior advisor, said Monday night indicated that she was confident Paul's supporters would blow opponents out of the water when it came to the important delegate vote, adding that she has spent the last few weeks criss-crossing the state to ensure Paul's voters knew exactly what to do when the caucuses rolled around.

We will update when we know how it all turned out.
