Mendon infant killed in drunk driving crash

MENDON, Mich. — A suspected drunk driver fled the scene after he caused a fatal crash that killed a 6-month-old Mendon boy last week, according to investigators.

Jimenez Lopez, 24, was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident-causing death, operating under the influence causing death and driving with a suspended license, in the Nov. 1 fatal crash that killed Alden Adams.

Lopez's bond was set at $150,000 during his arraignment in St. Joseph County District Court Monday.

Lopez admitted that he had been drinking when he rear ended a minivan that was preparing to turn left from M-60 onto Angevine Road in Mendon Township at 6:55 a.m. Nov. 1, according to the St Joseph County Sheriff's Office.

"We just heard a big crunch and the window shook in the house being close by," a neighbor told News Channel 3.

Six month old Alden suffered critical injuries and died at Bronson Methodist Hospital, according to investigators.

Detectives say Lopez ran into a cornfield to escape police but was quickly located and arrested.

Lopez did not have a valid driver's license and was identified as a Mexican citizen living in the United States illegally, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office.
Lopez is due back in St. Joseph County District Court for a preliminary hearing November 22.

Alden's mother Samantha Adams, 30, suffered minor injuries.
