Victim killed by alleged ‘illegal alien’ in Hamilton identified

HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) - The victim killed by whom the Butler County sheriff described as an “illegal alien” has been identified.

Fernando Reyna Oviedo, 41, died from a gunshot wound around 4:30 p.m. on April 1, according to the Butler County Coroner’s Office.

Oviedo died in the 1100 block of S. 13th Street, the coroner’s report shows.

The coroner said they are still searching for Oviedo’s family. Call the coroner’s office at 513-785-5860 if you have any information.

Two days after Oviedo’s death, Hamilton police announced they had arrested a suspect, 46-year-old Fermin Garcia-Gutierrez, in the case.

Jail records show Garcia-Gutierrez is charged with aggravated murder and other charges.

The 46-year-old was the subject of Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones’ press conference on March 29.

The sheriff said Garcia-Gutierrez is jailed on an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) holder.

“Garcia-Gutierrez has been deported seven times and he has been in our jail 11 times using seven different names and three different date of births,” Sheriff Jones said.

When discussing Garcia-Gutierrez’s case, the sheriff brought up concerns about illegal immigrants and border security.

Sheriff Jones said they have seen nearly 1,000 “illegal aliens” facing state charges in their jail since July 2021.

The Ohio Immigration Alliance said in response to the sheriff’s concerns that “immigrants commit crimes at a far lower rate than people born in the United States. That is the finding of every study conducted by credible institutions, not an advocacy group like the Center for Immigration Studies.”

Hamilton police say they are not looking for any other suspects in Oviedo’s death.
On July 11, a judge set Garcia-Gutierrez’s bond at $5 million.
