Anti-Christ shooter left note saying he’d ‘be welcomed in Hell’

The 26-year-old killer who singled out Christians during a bloody rampage inside an Oregon community college Thursday left a rambling, hate-filled note behind saying he would be “welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil.”

Gunman Chris Harper-Mercer — who “felt the world was against him” — left the note at blood-soaked Umpqua Community College in Roseburg where he killed nine people and left seven wounded.

    Modal Trigger
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin at a news conference on Oct. 2.

Harper-Mercer, who was killed in a shootout with police outside one of the classrooms, added that he was in “a bad way” and bemoaned the fact that he didn’t have a girlfriend. “He said he had no life,” an official told NBC News.

Harper-Mercer’s family said he suffered from mental issues, and sought out treatment at one point, according to CNN.

On Thursday, Harper-Mercer, clad in body armor with steel plates, burst into an English class at UCC’S Synder Hall, demanding to know students’ religious affiliations before he carried out the carnage and gunned them down.

Harper-Mercer then moved on to other classrooms, according to reports.

Officials recovered a total of 13 weapons – six guns were recovered at the school, another seven were discovered at his home, said ATF special agent Celinez Nunez on Friday.

All of the weapons were legally purchased by Harper-Mercer or by members of his family.

Investigators say it is too soon to identify a motive for the mass murder. “This is a very active investigation still,” said Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin at a press briefing Friday.

Hanlin still refused to name the killer despite a swath of media outlets publishing his name.

“I continue to believe that those media and community members who publish his name will only glorify his horrific actions,” he said.

“Eventually this will only serve to inspire future shooters.”

Apparently. Let's not jump to conclusions until the facts have been revealed. The guy had divorced parents, and had moved from LA to a very small remote town on Oregon Coast. The 30 year old vet who rushed to stop him was wounded 7 times! Amazing!

His family knew he had mental issues and let him have 13 guns at home. Same story with other shooters; many families are dysfunctional. Perhaps a prescription from a mental health doctor should be required for gun purchases.

Army records indicate that Mercer was in service at Fort Jackson, S.C, from November 5 until December 11, 2008 but was discharged for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards to serve in the U.S. Army.

His father is from England, speaks with a British accent, but lives in California now. He lived with his mother in Winchester, Oregon just a few miles from Roseburg. The shooter was born in England, so depending on the immigration status of his parents, he might be an illegal alien!

He might be an illegal alien from Ireland, there are 40,000 of them in the US. I think that's the accent of his father that I couldn't quite pin down as English or Australian. It may be Irish brogue.

Sheriff: Oregon gunman was enrolled at college, attacked his classmates

Nine people were killed and at least 10 injured by a gunman at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday. The gunman was later killed in a shootout with police.

Michael Muskal, Marisa Gerber and Richard Winton Contact Reporters

The gunman who carried out the deadly community college attack in Oregon was a student at the school and a classmate of those he targeted in Thursday’s mass shooting.

"He was a student at Umpqua Community College and was enrolled in the class where the mass shooting took place."
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said Friday.

It had earlier been reported that he had no connection to the school.

The nine people who were killed in the deadly attack on Umpqua Community College were identified Friday, a list that included freshmen students who had just started their college careers and a teacher.

“This is one of the hardest things that anyone has to do,” said C. Lance Colley, the city manager in tiny Rosenburg.

“Something that we hoped won’t happen anywhere much less our community.”

Those killed were identified as Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18; Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; and Lucas Eibel, 18, all of Roseburg, Ore.; Jason Johnson, 33, of Winston, Ore.; Lawrence Levine, 67, Glide, Ore.; Sarena Dawn Moore, 44, and Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18, both of Myrtle Creek, Ore.; and Treven Taylor Anspach, 20, of Sutherlin, Ore.

There has been nearly one school shooting per week since Sandy Hook

Authorities offered a brief glimpse into the live of one of the victims. “We have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing Lucas was, but that would take 18 years,” the statement from the Eibel family said.

The gunman who carried out the deadly attack on Umpqua Community College was described Friday as a “hate-filled” individual, with anti-religion and white supremacist leanings who has long struggled with mental health issues, law enforcement sources said.

Officials said Friday they had recovered 13 weapons tied to the shooter, Chris Harper Mercer, 26. Six were found at the college, seven were found during a search of his apartment -- and all were legally purchased, officials said.

The family of Chris Harper-Mercer, who is suspected of killing at least nine people Thursday in Oregon, says they are in shock.

During the Thursday rampage that left nine dead and 10 wounded, Mercer wore body armor and had extra ammunition, although it was unclear whether he carried it during the shooting or left it in his car, a federal source said Friday.

Mercer was killed in a gunfight with sheriff's deputies.

LIVE UPDATES: Oregon college shooting >>

Armed with three handguns and an assault rifle, he stormed the college’s Snyder Hall about 10:30 a.m. Thursday and started firing. As the shots erupted, students cowered in their classrooms and frantically called 911, sending a stream of ambulances, their sirens screaming, to the campus.

A close friend of one of the survivors offered a dramatic account of the unfolding violence.

Jayme Skinner said Chris Mintz rushed toward the sound of the bullets popping and pleaded with the gunman. "It's my son's birthday!" Mintz told the shooter as he collapsed to the ground, Skinner said.

Bullets hit Mintz in the upper back, hip, abdomen and left hand, Skinner said, but he is in stable condition at the hospital.

Mintz and Skinner's son, Tyrik, turned six Thursday and he has autism, Skinner said, and doesn't understand what happened to his father.

Hanlin on Friday refused to use the gunman’s name, saying he did not want to “glorify” the man whose actions have stunned the rural timberland community 180 miles south of Portland.

During a briefing, Hanlin tried to keep the focus on the victims. “These families are currently living through the nightmare in the most personal way possible,” Hanlin said.

Meanwhile, new details were emerging about Mercer, who was apparently obsessed with guns, held anti-religion views and liked to discuss military history. Sources said he left behind an angry, hate-filled note.

Through interviews, investigators said they discovered that Mercer struggled with his mental health since he was a teenager and that his condition undermined his ability to succeed in life, a law enforcement source said.

One of the setbacks occurred in 2008, when he was discharged from the Army after only one month for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards to serve, according to records. He had been stationed at Ft. Jackson, S.C, from Nov. 5 to Dec. 11 of that year.

The community college remained closed and cordoned off to traffic on Friday.

“Yesterday was a challenging day,” Dr. Jason Gray of Mercy Medical Center told reporters in the morning. “The days and weeks ahead will be the most challenging” as the community of about 22,000 people tries to deal with the aftermath of the shooting that touched almost everyone’s life. Ten people were treated at Mercy Medical Center, he said.

“The initial emotions are disbelief,” Gray said. “It's still very raw.”

But he found some comfort, he said, in the outpouring of support from people across the country.

None of the victims have been officially named. Gray said they were men and women of varying ages, saying the average age skewed young. Some of the victims' injuries, he said, included gunshot wounds to the abdomen and head.

Of those treated at Mercy, one died, two were quickly treated and released and three were transferred to a hospital near Eugene for higher-level care, Gray said. Hospital officials in Eugene said two patients were stable and one was being moved out of the intensive care unit.

Of the four remaining patients at Mercy, one was discharged late Thursday and one is expected to leave Friday.

One patient was listed in critical condition and one in stable condition, Gray said.

The shooting is the latest in a series of attacks that has prompted calls for tougher gun control laws.

Hanlin spoke out against gun control legislation last year, telling a state legislative committee that mandating background checks for private, person-to-person gun sales would not prevent criminals from getting firearms.

Hanlin also sent a letter to Vice President Joe Biden after the 2012 shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Hanlin said he and his deputies would refuse to enforce new gun-control restrictions “offending the constitutional rights of my citizens.”

On Friday, Hanlin said he he hasn’t changed his position on gun control, but refused to discuss any details.

“My focus right now is on getting this investigation completed,” he told reporters. “This is not an appropriate time to have conversation” about gun control.
