Thread: Spanish television news...

I am a anglo who is pretty much fluent in Spanish. My wife is South American, LEGAL, and we do speak a lot of Spanish at HOME. My daughters speak only English to me as I have told them NOT to speak Spanish with me. The burden is on my wife to learn English NOT on the US to cater to her. WE GET IT!

We watch a lot of Spanish television and I enjoy watching the Spanish news on UNIVISION and TELEMUNDO. I like to get the news from South America. However, I always have to turn it off towards the end. I am so sick of these reports they continually run trying to portray us as RACISTS because we want our immigration laws enforced. You know, sob stories where the parents get deported and the kids are left here with a relative. Too bad! Very few are the reports I see where these Hispanic reporters will admit that Mexico and the other Latin countries HAVE failed their people so they run north. Then of course they hardly ever say ILLEGAL it is indocumentado in Spanish. Undocumented. Just like the English press refuses to say illegal.

Of course, this is Spanish television so what would I expect? However, TELEMUNDO, which is owned by NBC which is a part of GE, I think, (Confusing?) is a little less biased then Univision.

The so called Hispanic community lives in denial.

I have mentioned this before but I will mention this again. I have seen many Hispanic businesses open where I live. I am sure that the federal government is giving SBA loans to illegals because Hispanic citizens have gotten to positions in the government where they can do this. However, if we have "diversity" to make America a melting pot then how come the grand majority of the employees in these new business ventures are almost %100 Hispanic. No African Americans, no Asain Americans and no anglos. The press says nothing and we hear of no lawsuits about discrimination.

They can build a communtiy within the community. Then another Spanish term I hear is "Nuestra communidad" Our community. Is this not racist? If I as an Anglo said this then of course I am racist right? Yet, this is a common term I hear from Spanish media.

So, I watch Spanish news until the sob stories start...then I turn it off! What part of the word ILLEGAL do they not understand? Cual parte de la palabra illegal no comprenden ellos?

Alipacdude, my wife is also native South American (yes, also legal) and fluent in English. She unfortunately gets the Latin American news alone as my Spanish is terrible. She does however share what she learns with me (translated of course).

I'm curious if you have seen the telecasts on Venezuelan state-run TV by Hugo Chavez directing his countrymen within the US to assist and contribute to the Obama campaign? He calls Obama a "brother in the revolution" and a "true revolutionary" who is going to change America and align us more closely with Chavez' ideals. Not only is my wife concerned over this affiliation through support of Obama, but also she points out that surely Chavez is somehow funneling money to the campaign if he is supportive enough to ask resident Venezuelans and other South Americans to do so. I take it as a good point, especially since he reportedly socked away in excess of $50M last month alone.

Has anyone else heard about this or seen it in the media?

Hugo is a nut job. A funny little man with a big mouth and napoleanic mentality. I laugh everytime he says something.

Well, the Colombian government killed a top guerilla leader, Raul Reyes, a few weeks ago and confiscated some lap tops that talked about Hugo Chavez supporting Barack Hussein Obama. So, it would not surprise me if Chavez is funneling money to Obama.

The president of Ecuador is a little socialist too! He studied in IL by the way, this Correa yet attacks the US government. If the FARC Colombian guerillas are in Ecuador then why has not Correa destroyed them in Ecuador and only after Colombian (CIA) military attacks in Ecuador does he send in 3,000 Ecuadoran troops? Too little too late Correa!

I hated NAFTA and I hate NAFTA but I support free trade with Colombia because so much of our industry is now in China that a free trade deal with Colombia will not matter in my opinion. The US government basically destroyed US flower production by allowing the Colombians to set up flower plants with USAID funds (your taxes) in the name of stoping Coco leaf production and I think this has been a farce since the flowers are grown right next to Bogota's airport. (Good for Wal-mart and proflowers.com)

Chavez, I think is ignorant and is a "Marionetta" of Castro. Puppet! But, when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002, Washington briefly recognized the new government of Carmona. The Venezuelan military men should have thrown him out of a helicopter which is what the Argentinains would have done. Chavez has a right to hate Bush and Washington and I support Chavez when he speaks for the poor because Venezuela has had BILLIONS of dollars in wealth from oil since the 1950s and little has has gone to the majority of the people. Only 26 million people in Venezuela mind you! There should be no slums in Caracas and they ring the city. POOR PEOPLE! However, when Chavez then buys 30 Russian Mig 30's, submarines and helicopters from Spain and 100,000 AK-47's then tell me he cares about the poor? He is on a ego trip! Spend that wealth on the poor Hugo!

Obama? Well Billary looks good and Obama's 20 years in that guys church.

McCain, Billary, or Obama on immigration? I can't vote for any of them but McCain looks better overall. (Billary is such a smart woman and her husband cheated on her how many times and she will not divorce him? Go figure!)

Same here......no equal oppertunity for any other citizens for employment either. They'll hire illegal relatives before a single citizen is hired. Lately it's not even "bi-lingual"....just Spanish mandatory......to fold clothes....yet it was unfair and racist for them to speak English.

Welcome Alipacdude! I also don't feel racist. I have no problem with legal immigration, now the H1B Visa's are a different thing. They take Americans jobs, such as the scam Bill Gates is trying to pull.

There should be one site where people with lots of degrees that have been laid off can post their story. Gates says there aren't any Americans qualified??? Be serious, he doesn't want to pay regular wages to them. This is a form of the 21st Century slavery.

We can not afford to take care of Mexico's and other countries problems. We are knee-deepin our own here.

Once again, why can't Mexico, Venezuela, and other oil rich, resource rich countries take care of their people?

Why don't the people of those countries revolt and demand their rights from their own countries?

Why does the USA owe them cart blanche, citizenship and free benefits? Why are we having to adapt to them? Why are we giving them loans for businesses? Why are we allowing them to take our jobs and benefits?

Why can these people come here and openly discriminate against others, but Americans are villains and racist if we do the same?
