Breaking: Michael Flynn Resigns Amid Uproar Over Russia Ties

Michael Flynn resigns amid uproar over Russia ties

President Donald Trump's National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has resigned, amid an uproar over conversations with a Russian ambassador to the US, according two sources cited by CNN.

The news comes after an earlier report that Flynn may be susceptible to Russian blackmail, according to an assessment from the Department of Justice that was compiled late last month.

A report from The Washington Post on Monday night said Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates warned the White House that Flynn had misled officials about his correspondence with Russia's ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak.

Yates was fired by Trump at the end of January after she defied him on his now-suspended travel ban.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan both said at the time that “Flynn had put himself in a compromising position,” with Russia and agreed that Vice President Mike Pence deserved to know he had been misled, according to officials cited by The Post. It remains unclear what White House counsel Donald McGahn did with that information.

Flynn reportedly apologized on Monday to Pence, saying that he may have discussed the Obama administration’s sanctions with Kislyak before Trump was sworn in. Prior to this, Flynn contended that US sanctions never came up during his conversations with Kislyak.

President Barack Obama announced new sanctions on Russia in late December for that country's role in election-related cyberattacks.

    Major fallout
As the evidence of Flynn's discussions mounted, including transcripts of calls, a spokesman said that Flynn "indicated that while he had no recollection of discussing sanctions, he couldn't be certain that the topic never came up."

The damage had already been done, however, as The New York Times reports that three administration officials familiar with the situation reportedly said Pence, who made several television appearances to defend Flynn, was incensed at the national security adviser for allegedly withholding information.

Earlier Monday, press secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement that the White House was “evaluating the situation” with Flynn. A senior Trump administration official also said that they were aware of the matter and that they were “working on this for weeks.”

    Mounting pressure
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers had urged Flynn to resign. On Monday, Republican Rep. Mike Coffman of Colorado released this statement:

"As national security advisor, Michael Flynn is responsible to the President, Vice President, and the American people. It is his duty to be fully transparent and forthright in his actions — anything less is unacceptable. If in fact he purposely misled the President, he should step down immediately.”

Rumors of Flynn’s removal were also fueled when sources close to the White House told Politico on Monday that Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner was taking party in the search for potential replacements for Flynn. One of these replacements could be retired Gen. David Petraeus, according to Politico, is scheduled to meet with Trump this week.

“They are trying to figure out the solution to Flynn right now,” said one of Politico's sources. “The problem is they don’t have it yet. They need to get a solution.”

Michael Flynn Resigns as National Security Adviser

by RICHARD GREENBERG, ALEX JOHNSON and KRISTEN WELKER

    February 13, 2017

Michael Flynn abruptly resigned as President Donald Trump's national security adviser Monday night, hours after it was learned that the Justice Department informed the White House that it believed he could be subject to blackmail, two senior Trump administration sources told NBC News.

Retired Army Gen. Keith Kellogg, a top policy adviser for Trump's preidential campaign, was appointed acting national security adviser, the sources said.

Flynn's status was considered perilous after it was disclosed that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other senior officials about his communications with Russia's ambassador to the United States, a senior U.S. official told NBC News.

The U.S. official confirmed part of a report in The Washington Post, which quoted current and former U.S. officials Monday as saying Sally Yates, then the acting attorney general, delivered the message to White House counsel Donald McGahn.

The Post reported that Yates was privy to FBI monitoring showing that Flynn discussed sanctions on Russia with Ambassador Sergei Kislyak — even though Flynn told administration officials that he hadn't. Pence repeated the misinformation in national television appearances.

Trump fired Yates as acting attorney general late last month after she directed Justice Department lawyers not to defend his executive order on immigration.

A senior intelligence official confirmed to NBC News last week that Flynn discussed the sanctions, which the Obama administration imposed to punish Russia for its campaign to interfere in the presidential election.

The intelligence official said there had been no finding inside the government that Flynn did anything illegal.

But Monday, the only clear thing about Flynn's status was that it is unclear.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway told NBC News on Monday that Flynn still has the full confidence of the president, appearing to signal that Flynn's job is safe.

But moments later, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the president was "evaluating the situation" and was talking with Pence about his discussions with Flynn.

Spicer confirmed reports that Flynn had called Pence to apologize.

Trump pointedly declined to answer reporters' questions about Flynn on Monday afternoon, saying only, "We just put out a statement."

By contrast, he was effusive in his praise for White House CHief of Staff Reince Priebus, saying: "Reince is doing a great job. Great. Not a good job. A great job."

It is a shame this situation occurred. Mike Flynn stood by President Trump from early on in the campaign season through this time.

From speeches, Lt. General Flynn also seemed to strongly support efforts to enforce our immigration laws that America so desperately needs. There are sadly not too many people like that hanging around.

And he also wants to improve our relations with Russia, something I want very much and I think a lot of Americans would want when they know the real truth about Russia. They are actually a lot like US in many ways. Their situation is a lot different than ours because they have it a lot harder than we do and always have, so how they approach things is different than how we can approach a lot of things, but they're doing really good right now.

The situation of Vice President Pence defending him with the media and then finding out he most likely spoke about the sanctions to The Russian ambassador was not good. Then there was the mention of blackmail.

Kinda funny that General Petraeus would be considered for the job after his past problems, sharing information, especially right after this Mike Flynn mess up.

The CORRUPT MEDIA AND INTEL COMMUNITY did this. Flynn was set-up, framed. But what do you do? Let them win a battle so we can win the war? I guess that's what Flynn and Trump decided.

We'll see who they replace him with. This is sad though, it really is. Our intel community is rotten to the core. Trump is going to have to bust it or a lot of problems we want to fix are going to go down the tubes.

CNN guests are all saying it wasn't what Flynn actually did, it was the misinformation he gave Pence before he went on that TV interview. It's also saying that Trump didn't fire him, Trump was standing by him, but Flynn felt it was too much of a distraction and decided to resign for good of the Presidency.

What exactly are you basing your allegation on? I see absolutely no evidence in the articles that have been posted to suggest Flynn was framed or set up. To me it appears he very well may have made a mistake. I hate that this happened, but to play the blame game and make excuses for it doesn't help anything. I feel fairly confident that President Trump wouldn't have released Flynn if he thought he was innocent. Trust me, Trump has a lot more knowledge on this than the public is privy to. Besides that, Trump doesn't repay loyalty in such a manner. There is obviously something there.

    This is very damning:
