Thread: CSpan2 - Sen Vitter speaking on new Immigration Enforcement

7:22am PT - Vitter is announcing creation of new Senate Caucus on immigration enforcement and following bills to deal with problem.

"We want enforcement first"

"This caucus will continue to follow the lead of the American people".

"Push for border security and interior enforcement first."

'Attrition through enforcement.'

False choice: 'amnesty or deportation'

Zogby poll : Most Americans prefer 3rd option (attrition through enforcement)

Most polls leave this 3rd option out.

How do we get there? there are 2 components:

1. Border security first. We've done a lot in this area, and more can be done.

2. Interior enforcement - esp. at workplace. (this is the missing link)
We need a real system that is void of dependence on paper docs; a real-time system that can be used instead. Violators should be hit with significant criminal penalties.


I'm glad to announce the creation of this caucus to address this problem.

We don't want an Amnesty - we want enforcement first.

Good for Vitter. It's about time somebody in the Senate took the lead on this.

Does this mean that we could deal with our illegal immigration problem NOW, before the November election and if this passed that President Bush would sign it, and we would be able to focus on other issues at election time?

If so, I believe that would be the best thing for our country.

Exactly! This is what I've been waiting for. Offense instead of defense. Now from what I hear, they don't expect to get anything really accomplished with the Democratic House and Senate but it will bring illegal immigration back to the Presidential debate. Woo Hoo

Maybe we should call Vitter and Sessions offices and ask if a weekly bulletin to their offices of victims of illegals would be helpful?

I heard on Fox News that about 12 Senators are going to make an announcement on this. They will hold that news conference. Woo Hoo

As long as the bill progresses through both houses, there's no reason why we shouldn't be able to deal with this issue even before the elections, that is unless they pass the bill with a start date after the elections.

I missed this. Thank you Phred for outlining the basics. I will listen to FOX to see if they repeat the story Gogo. Sounds like good news.
