The comprehensive immigration plan the US should study
Posted by C.A. Morrison

Tough immigration reforms are impossible to implement, unfair and bad for the economy, right? Not according to Britain's conservative Prime Minister David Cameron who detailed the UK's comprehensive immigration policies in an important speech this week. Cameron opened by validating the concerns of British citizens and also the contributions of legal immigrants to the UK.

Cameron then detailed the steps his government is taking which include:

• Instituting tough border controls and deporting illegal aliens.

• Cracking down on sham marriages, students overstaying visas, smuggling and employers hiring illegal aliens.

• Requiring immigrants who apply to enter the UK to know English and integrate into local communities.

• Capping immigration to tens of thousands from hundreds of thousands

Cameron also shot down the notion that immigrants do jobs that Brits won't do by pointing out that immigrants displace Brits who then go on welfare which he described as woeful and two sides of the same coin. He also laid out strategies for admitting those whose skills would enhance the British economy, including an entrepreneur visa.

Predictably Cameron's speech was roundly slammed by liberal critics to whom he responded, "[It was] an important attempt to explain why we are doing what we are doing, why it's right and why some of the critics of it, actually, are off beam."

Britain's comprehensive immigration policies are worth the US studying. We also need conservative leaders like David Cameron who have the courage to act on principle on this important issue.
