Elon Musk threatens to leave White House advisory councils if Trump drops Paris accord

Tesla CEO Elon Musk threatened Wednesday to stop advising President Donald Trump if the White House withdraws from the Paris climate accords.

Asked on Twitter what he would do if Trump pulled out of the landmark global deal to curb emissions, Musk said he would "have no choice but to depart [the] councils in that case."

Trump tweeted Wednesday that he will announce his decision on the Paris deal "over the next few days" as he faces intense pressure from the deal's supporters and detractors. Reports Wednesday indicated that he is expected to withdraw from the climate agreement, though some news outlets cautioned that he had not made a final decision.

Musk, who also founded SpaceX, is on Trump's manufacturing jobs council, his strategic and policy forum, and his infrastructure council. Musk has defended his role advising Trump in the face of some criticism from anti-Trump activists, arguing that they should want his voice in the discussions to offer views that differ from those of the president's other advisors.

Musk, among other CEOs of major American companies, urged Trump to uphold the agreement. He tweeted Wednesday that he has "done all [he] can to advise directly to [Trump]," through White House officials and advisory councils, to remain in the accord.

Since taking office, Trump has started to roll back Obama administration energy regulations that he and some advisors say hold back American energy companies. While officials like Secretary of State Rex Tillerson support the Paris deal, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt had pushed against it.

A group of top Republican senators including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also urged Trump to withdraw from the agreement.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request to comment on this article.

Asked about Musk's tweet Wednesday, press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters to wait to see what the president does.

I found this so strange. Why would an American withdraw from the manufacturing councils because the US withdraws from a stupid Paris Accord? Sure, it removes some of the forced market for Teslas, (Elon Musk owns Tesla among other companies) but in that price range of $70,000 to $138,000 for an electric car, you aren't talking about the average American as your car buyer even with tax credits to subsidize your product sales.

So I decided to look him up on Wiki. Well, he's not really an American that's why. He's an immigrant naturalized American, became a US citizen in 2002, was born in South Africa, then lived many years in Canada and became a Canadian citizen and some years into college he transferred to colleges in the US and after graduating from Wharton moved to California to attend Stanford but dropped out and started his businesses. Then in 2002, he became a US citizen. I guess he came here on a student visa, then ... I guess some other kind of visa, so I'm really not sure how a student visa leads to citizenship. How does that work?

In any event, he's a globalist ... lived in 3 countries ... his heart is in himself and his money, that's why the Paris Accord is so important to him. It's about his businesses, not our workers, citizens or nation.

I don't know what the final decision is by the President on the accord, but I sure hope he withdraws from the Paris Accord and puts America First to Make America Great Again!!

Withdrawing from the agreement doesn't mean we're not going to continue to protect the environment. The United States has been protecting its environment since the 1970's. Even before that actually. But it was in the 1970's when we Republicans through Richard Nixon established the EPA to do more. And the results have been very good. The Paris Accord has had nothing to do with the major reduction of US air emissions, Americans did that, all by ourselves. And we'll determine how, when and by what means and at whose costs we'll continue to deal with this important issue in the future.

Global Leadership begins at home, taking care of your own business, your own economy, and your own citizens. We are a nation of citizens, not oligarchs exploiting fear and government reaction to enrich select businesses at the expense of others. At least we never intended to be so.

While Elon Musk is trying to get to Mars to build a "colony" (swear to God, it's in Wiki), most Americans are trying to gather up enough money to go to the store.
