Good news for Trump, Clinton in latest polling

    By Steve Benen

In recent interviews, Donald Trump has fielded a few questions about what it would take for him to give up on his presidential ambitions. It’s an odd line of inquiry – he’s still winning.

Consider, for example, the latest results from Public Policy Polling:

    1. Donald Trump: 27% (down two points from late August)
    2. Ben Carson: 17% (up two points)
    3. Marco Rubio: 13% (up six points)
    4. Jeb Bush: 10% (up one point)
    5. Ted Cruz: 7% (up one point)
    6. Carly Fiorina: 6% (down two points)
    7. Mike Huckabee: 4% (down one point)
    7. John Kasich: 4% (down two points)

Chris Christie, Rand Paul, and Rick Santorum are tied for ninth place with 2% each in the poll, while Lindsey Graham, Bobby Jindal, and George Pataki are each at 1%.

The PPP analysis added, “Trump continues to lead with every subgroup of the GOP electorate.”

A new Quinnipiac poll, meanwhile, shows Trump leading in Florida with 28% of the Republican vote, up seven percentage points from late August. The New York developer also leads in Ohio with 23%, up two points from five weeks ago, and Trump leads in Pennsylvania with 23%, down a point from late August.

In each of three battleground states, Ben Carson is in second place. In Florida, Jeb Bush is running fourth in the state he led for eight years.

Among Democrats, PPP shows race for the nomination shaping up this way at the national level:

    1. Hillary Clinton: 42% (down 13 points from late August)
    2. Bernie Sanders: 24% (up four points)
    3. Joe Biden: 20% (N/A)

Note, when Biden is removed from consideration, Clinton’s lead over Sanders grows to 51%-28%.

In the Quinnipiac poll, Clinton also has a 24-point lead in Florida, a 19-point lead in Ohio, and an 11-point lead in Pennsylvania.

There’s a fair amount of chatter in political circles about Trump and Clinton facing real trouble, though nearly all of the recent data appears to show them in fairly strong positions. While there’s reason to believe each of the frontrunners had greater support a few months ago, it’s nevertheless clear that any of their rivals would gladly trade places with the leading candidates.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump just got some good news in a new batch of polls
    Business Insider By Colin Campbell

The Democratic and Republican presidential front-runners are holding onto their primary leads in three key states, according to a set of polls released Wednesday.

The Quinnipiac University surveys found former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and property magnate Donald Trump leading their primary rivals in Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

In Pennsylvania, Clinton garnered 36% of the vote — ahead of Vice President Joe Biden, who is still mulling a run and got 25%, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), who had 19%.

Trump's Pennsylvania edge wasn't as strong. He got 23% of the Republican vote there, ahead of retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson's 17%, Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-Florida) 12%, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina's 8%.

Clinton and Trump's leads in both Ohio and Florida were similar.

On the GOP side, those two states' results were especially notable because three major local candidates are in the presidential race: Rubio, Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R).

"Those who were waiting for Donald Trump's campaign to collapse will need to wait longer – at least in the three key states of Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania," Peter Brown, Quinnipiac's assistant director said in a statement.

The Quinnipiac polls also had some clear warning signs for both Trump and Clinton.

Neither front-runner performed especially strong in general-election matchups. Indeed, the pollster's write-up of the results noted that Trump and Clinton "continue to have the worst overall favorability ratings among all voters of any of the leading candidates, and the lowest scores for being honest and trustworthy."

In the three states tested, Quinnipiac found that Biden and Carson were the strongest nominees, though it's possible both could decline in future weeks under the media spotlight. In Florida, Biden beat Carson 45% to 42%. In Ohio, Carson got 46% to Biden's 42%. And in Pennsylvania, Carson edged Biden, 47% to 42%.

"When we get past the playoffs to the World Series, the general election face-off, Biden does better against leading Republicans than does Clinton or Sanders," Brown said.

"Trump, despite his strong showing in mock Republican primaries, fares worst among the GOP candidates matched against the three Democratic aspirants – giving some credence to pundits who say the billionaire could be every Democrats' favorite GOP nominee."

Donald Trump Dominates GOP Field; Weakest Against Hillary

Donald Trump Dominates GOP Field; Weakest Against Hillary

    by John Nolte7 Oct 20151,254

As Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump gears up his campaign with a $20 million ad buy (his first), the latest round of national and swing state polls show that the media narrative surrounding his imminent demise has been greatly exaggerated. The polls also show that Trump is the weakest of the top five Republicans in a general election campaign match-up with Hillary Clinton.

The media has spent the last week speculating if Trump will drop out of the race. These polls show that it is Jeb Bush who should be fielding these questions. Bush is not only drowning, he is doing so while spending millions and millions of dollars.

On “Morning Joe” this morning “Weekly Standard” editor Bill Kristol said that “Donald Trump has probably destroyed Jeb Bush.” These polls back that up.

    NATIONAL

The latest national polls show Trump with a commanding lead over his Republican opponents. The left-leaning Public Policy Polling firm has The Donald way out front with 27%. His next closest rival, Dr. Ben Carson, is -10 down at 17%.

The latest Ipsos /Reuters national poll has Trump at 33%, beating second and third place (Carson, Jeb Bush) combined.

    SWING STATES

In Florida, Quinnipiac shows that Trump is crushing his rivals with 28% support. Carson is second with 16%. Florida sons Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) sit at 12% and 14%, respectively. Trump’s support in Florida beats Bush and Rubio combined. That’s extraordinary.

In Ohio, Trump is crushing favorite son and current Republican governor John Kasich, 23% to 13%. Trump leads in the state. Carson is in second place with 18%. Cruz 11%; Fiorina 10%; Rubio 7%; Bush sits at a pathetic 4%.

The song is the same in Pennsylvania. Trump leads with 23%. Carson is in second place with 17%. Rubio 12%; Bush 4%; Fiorina 8%; Cruz 6%%.

    AGAINST HILLARY

In the general election, as of now, Trump is by far the weakest of the top five candidates when polled against Hillary.

Per Quinnipiac, in head-to-head match ups, Clinton beats Trump in Florida by +5 points, by +1% in Ohio, and +2% in Pennsylvania.

Bush and Rubio beat Hillary in Florida by +1%.

In Ohio, Bush +2%; Fiorina +2%; Rubio +4%, and Carson +9%, beat Hillary.

In Pennsylvania, Bush +6%, Fiorina +4%, Rubio +3%, and Carson +9% beat Clinton.

The other news out of these polls is that the once safe Blue State of Pennsylvania is a definite swing state.
