- French President Emmanuel Macron's June visit to Greenland will focus on Arctic security and climate cooperation, highlighting escalating tensions in great-power competition. Greenland remains defiant, choosing Denmark despite U.S. pressure.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has drawn the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump after firmly rejecting American overtures to bring the autonomous Danish territory under U.S. control. At a joint press conference in Copenhagen on Tuesday, Nielsen declared that Greenland would choose Denmark, NATO and the European Union over the U.S. if forced to decide—a stance Trump dismissed with a warning that it would be "a big problem" for the island's leader.
The escalating dispute underscores the Arctic's growing geopolitical significance, driven by rare earth minerals, new shipping routes and strategic military positioning.
Trump, who first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, has revived his ambitions, arguing that U.S. control is necessary to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.
"One way or the other, we're gonna have Greenland," Trump reiterated last week.
His administration has reportedly explored financial incentives—including surpassing Denmark's annual $600 million subsidy—to sway Greenlanders toward annexation.
However, Danish officials and Greenlandic leaders have firmly rebuffed the idea.
"Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be part of the United States," Nielsen stated. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned what she called "completely unacceptable pressure from our closest ally," warning that military force would fracture NATO.
Legislative and diplomatic tensions
The dispute has spilled into U.S. politics, with Florida Congressman Randy Fine introducing the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act. As explained by BrightU.AI's Enoch, the legislation would authorize Trump to take "whatever steps necessary" to acquire the territory. Danish Ambassador Jesper Moller Sorensen swiftly rejected the premise, reaffirming that Greenland's status is a matter for its people—who voted in 2008 to remain self-governing under Denmark.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte avoided direct comment but emphasized Arctic security as a collective alliance priority. European allies, including Canada and major EU nations, have rallied behind Denmark, stressing that sovereignty decisions rest solely with Copenhagen and Nuuk.
Strategic stakes in the Arctic
Greenland's melting ice caps have unlocked vast economic opportunities—oil reserves, rare earth minerals critical for renewable energy and new shipping lanes—making it a focal point in the U.S.-China-Russia rivalry. The U.S. already maintains a military presence at Thule Air Base, but Trump insists ownership is non-negotiable for national security.
Yet regional officials dispute his claims of Russian and Chinese dominance.
"There are no Russian or Chinese ships 'all over the place,'" one Greenlandic official said privately. "This is about control, not defense."
As French President Emmanuel Macron prepares for a June visit to Greenland—focusing on Arctic security and climate cooperation—the standoff highlights the fragility of alliances in an era of resurgent great-power competition. For now, Greenland's leadership remains steadfast.
"We choose Denmark," Nielsen declared—a position Trump may dismiss, but one that reflects the island's determination to chart its own future. With geopolitical tensions rising, the Arctic's icy waters may soon test the limits of diplomacy.

Jan 13 (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump last week reiterated his interest in taking control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, which could be useful for the U.S. because of its strategic location and rich mineral resources.
His allies in the U.S. House of Representatives are trying to build support for a bill to authorize talks for the purchase of the island, while Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said the country was ready to start a dialogue on its own terms.
A 2023 survey showed that 25 of 34 minerals deemed “critical raw materials” by the European Commission were found in Greenland.
The extraction of oil and natural gas is banned in Greenland for environmental reasons, and development of its mining sector has been snarled in red tape and opposition from indigenous people.

Some of the main mining projects and permits in Greenland.Below are details of Greenland’s main mineral deposits, based on data from Greenland’s Mineral Resources Authority:
ARE EARTHS
Three of Greenland’s biggest deposits are located in the southern Gardar province.
Companies seeking to develop rare earth mines are Critical Metals Corp (CRML.O), opens new tab, which bought the Tanbreez deposit, Energy Transition Minerals, whose Kuannersuit project is stalled amid legal disputes, and Neo Performance Materials (NEO.TO), opens new tab.
Rare earth elements are key for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles (EV) and wind turbines.
GRAPHITE
Occurrences of graphite and graphite schist are reported from many localities on the island.
GreenRoc (GROC.L), opens new tab has applied for an exploitation license to develop the Amitsoq graphite project.
Natural graphite is mostly used in EV batteries and steelmaking.
COPPER
According to the Mineral Resources Authority, most copper deposits have seen only limited exploration campaigns.
Especially interesting are the underexplored areas in the north-east and central-east of the island, it said.
London-listed 80 Mile (80M.L), opens new tab is seeking to develop the Disko-Nuussuaq deposit, which has copper, nickel, platinum and cobalt.
NICKEL
Traces of nickel accumulations are numerous, according to the Mineral Resources Authority.
Major miner Anglo American (AAL.L), opens new tab, was granted a five-year exploration licences in western Greenland in mid-2019 and has been looking for nickel deposits, among others.
ZINC
Zinc is mostly found in the north in a geologic formation that stretches more than 2,500 km.
Companies have sought to develop the Citronen Fjord zinc and lead project, which had been billed as one of the world’s largest undeveloped zinc resources.
GOLD
The most prospective areas for gold potential are around the Sermiligaarsuk fjord in the country’s south.
Amaroq Minerals (AMRQ.V), opens new tab launched a gold mine last year in Mt Nalunaq in the Kujalleq Municipality.
DIAMONDS
Greenland’s Hidden Minerals: The Untapped Treasure Beneath the Ice
While most small diamonds and the largest stones are found in the in the island’s west, their presence in other regions may also be significant.
IRON ORE
Deposits are located at Isua in southern West Greenland, at Itilliarsuk in central West Greenland, and in North West Greenland along the Lauge Koch Kyst.
TITANIUM-VANADIUM
Known deposits of titanium and vanadium are in the south-west, the east, and south.
Titanium is used for commercial, medical and industrial purposes, while vanadium is mainly used to produce specialty steel alloys. The most important industrial vanadium compound, vanadium pentoxide, is used as a catalyst for the production of sulfuric acid.
TUNGSTEN
Used for several industrial applications, tungsten is mostly found in the central east and north-east of the country, with assessed deposits in the south and west.
URANIUM
In 2021, the left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party banned uranium mining, effectively halting development of the Kuannersuit rare earths project, which has uranium as a byproduct.

While the country’s inland is mostly covered by glaciers, assessments of its coastline show the potential for the extraction of several minerals.($1 = 7.2705 Danish crowns)

NATO Begs U.S. For Emergency Funding So They Can Defend Greenland From U.S.

BRUSSELS — Amid the looming threat of a U.S. military takeover of Greenland, NATO requested emergency aid from the U.S. to help it defend Greenland from the U.S.
"This is an emergency, and we need the aid of the United States as soon as possible," said Secretary General Mark Rutte. "The U.S. could attack Greenland at any minute, and we have no ability to defend it unless we get some military aid from the U.S. immediately."
Europe had already begun building up Greenland's defences to 12 soldiers, 3 dog sled teams, and a fishing boat equipped with a harpoon, but experts expressed fear that it may not be enough to fend off America's military unless they get some help from America's military.
"Trump must fulfill his NATO commitment and send us American troops before American troops arrive," said EU leader Ursula von der Leyen. "If he doesn't, we'll call him racist."
"We know you wouldn't want that."
Trump was quick to respond, but suggested he would probably just send the "4th-rate loser weaking soldiers" and the "fatties."
At publishing time, NATO had further bolstered Greenland's defenses by sending a horde of muslim migrants.

- Denmark has sent an advance contingent of its armed forces to Greenland to strengthen its military presence on the strategically important Arctic island.
- Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Denmark plans a more permanent and larger military presence in Greenland, with participation from North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies in response to growing Arctic security challenges.
- The advance unit is preparing infrastructure and supply lines for the possible arrival of larger Danish forces, though much of Denmark's combat capacity remains committed to NATO missions in the Baltic states.
- Several NATO allies, including Germany, Sweden, France and Norway, are deploying small numbers of troops to Greenland for joint exercises, including preparations for Operation Arctic Endurance.
- Greenland's strategic importance has heightened international interest, with the U.S. already maintaining about 150 troops at Pituffik Space Base, while Canada plans to open a consulate in Nuuk in the coming weeks.
An advance contingent of the Danish Armed Forces has arrived in Greenland as Denmark moves to strengthen its military presence on the strategically important Arctic island.
Greenland, the world's largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, though Copenhagen retains responsibility for defense and foreign policy. As BrightU.AI's Enoch, its strategic importance in the Arctic has made it a focal point of international competition, particularly between the U.S. and China, as both nations seek to secure its vast resources and strategic shipping lanes.
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed that the government is committed to establishing "a more permanent and larger military presence" in and around Greenland for Denmark and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies. He described the move as a response to growing security challenges in the Arctic region.
"We are now moving forward with the whole issue of a more permanent larger presence in Greenland from Danish defense, but also with the participation of other countries," he said. "Just as we had in 2025, where we saw that there were other NATO countries participating in exercise and training activities in Greenland, we will also see this in 2026."
In line with this, Denmark has begun deploying military equipment and advanced troops to prepare logistics and infrastructure for the possible arrival of larger forces from the Danish Army and other branches of the armed forces. The advance unit is tasked with readying facilities and supply lines to support a broader deployment at a later stage.
The reinforcements are also expected to include soldiers from Danish Army units, although much of Denmark's remaining combat capability is currently committed to NATO missions in the Baltic states.
NATO allies send troops to Greenland to show solidarity
NATO, which includes 30 European nations along with the United States and Canada, is founded on the principle of collective defense, meaning an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. That principle has made Trump's comments particularly alarming to European allies, given Greenland's status as part of NATO through Denmark.
As a result, other NATO countries are also deploying small numbers of military personnel to Greenland to take part in joint exercises with Denmark.
In a statement on Wednesday, Jan. 14, Germany's Defense Ministry said it would send a reconnaissance team of 13 military personnel to Greenland on Thursday for an "exploration mission" alongside partner nations, at Denmark's invitation.
Sweden also dispatched an unspecified number of troops to Greenland on Wednesday, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on X, formerly known as Twitter. The Swedish officers will join forces from other allied countries to prepare for an upcoming exercise known as Operation Arctic Endurance.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed France's participation in the exercise, writing on X that "the first French military units are already on their way," with additional forces to follow. Norway is sending two defense personnel, according to a spokesperson for the Norwegian Ministry of Defense.
Canada has also said it plans to open a consulate in Nuuk, Greenland's capital, in the coming weeks.
Watch this clip of U.S. President Donald Trump reiterating that Washington "needs Greenland" during an interview aboard Air Force One.

Greenland-and President Trump's Ham-Handed Approach
Greenland-and President Trump's Ham-Handed Approach
Saturday, January 17, 2026
President Trump is amping up the temperature over Greenland. He is now imposing new tariffs on several European countries until the Greenland issue is "resolved". Recently, he has made statements in public to the effect that we are going to take Greenland one way or the other, "the easy way or the hard way". His stated position seems to be that either Denmark sells us Greenland or we take it by force.
The justification? Greenland occupies a strategic position in the Arctic Circle, and that Russian and Chinese naval vessels in the region pose a threat.
Let me get one thing out of the way: That is a legitimate concern and one that must be addressed by NATO.
That said, Trump's approach is ham-handed, as is his style. That is how he has spent his life getting things he wanted or things he wanted to have done. The result here is that the Europeans no longer feel they can depend on the US. Of course, we all know that Trump wants our NATO partners to do much more in the defense of their own continent. I have no quarrel with that.
What I find troubling is Trump's tendency to alienate our friends and allies. That is exactly what is happening here. It is not that I am pro-Europe. They have enough problems of their own, largely of their own making, which this site regularly reports on. But in this case, one cannot blame them for being offended, especially Denmark, to say nothing of the Greenlanders.
Here is how the Greenland issue should be handled: Trump and his pertinent cabinet members should sit down with NATO (which includes Denmark) and explain our concerns regarding the Russians and Chinese. The US, as part of NATO, already has a small military presence in Greenland. Our position would be that this presence and the overall NATO presence should be dramatically increased for the sake of everyone's security.
If Trump wants to purchase Greenland, he can sit down with Denmark and make the offer. If Denmark says Greenland is not for sale (which they have so stated), Trump needs to back off. The reasonable solution is for NATO to jointly agree that Russian and Chinese encroachment is unacceptable and that there will be a much greater NATO presence in Greenland.
As it is, this drama is giving the US a black eye. And it was totally unnecessary.
