Has anyone ever applied for a job at Sears.com?

I have a recently unemployed (homeless) friend who walks the streets everyday looking for work in every business he comes by. I was asked to apply for him at sears.com.

WOW! I knew sears was funky, but on the front page you have to choose English or Spanish to apply or search for jobs. Then when it asks what your race or nationality is, each and every choice says (not Latino or Hispanic)... beside each one except for Hispanic? What's that about? I mean really! If I am black (which is my friends hue) I have to acknowledge I am not Hispanic or Latino? Odd, very odd. I couldn't find a box to check stating I was black of Hispanic decent other than "mixed race" at the bottom, and again, what the heck does that have to do with anything? Man, this has gotten out of control.

Then when they ask how you heard about said position, they have la raza listed as a choice. I almost went back and changed him to mixed race and checked the la raza box so he would get the job!

Ive boycotted sears for several personal and professional reasons, but now?

I was wondering if I should go back to the site and apply myself (I would have to mis-spell my German name), check Hispanic and learned through la raza and see which one of us gets an interview?
Have you ever stopped to think, and forget to start again?

Sears ain't the only one.............. I think it's a huge problem that needs to be dealt with. Every application I've filled out over the last 5 months, and it asks the same question.

I don't know that it's a good idea to lie on a job application But that application is a sure sign way of sears showing its True colors! And I think that its from affirmative action! So employers can make sure that they are diverse enough to stay out of trouble. Any way though I believe that only the most qualified person should get any job, because if America continues to accept mediocrity were just going to keep sliding down the totem pole! What can you? It sucks and makes no scene!

What has happened? It used to be illegal to ask a person's race as it was considered discriminatory.

It would simply be a little test to see if they favored Hispanic over non-Hispanic. I would actually use a Hispanic sounding name and a PO Box with my true phone number. Lying? Yes, but I would never continue past the call anyway. I destroyed the sears bridge beyond recognition years ago.

I also understand the affirmative action reason, but what is the purpose of putting "not Hispanic or Latino" behind each selection? It should be white, black, hispanic, asian, pacific islander, etc... or whatever the PC wording would be. The "mixed race" is just stupid overkill and has no bearing on anything about affirmative action.

The next move would be to have drop-down boxes next to your selection. Then another drop-down sub-section, then a sub-section of that one, then by the time the average person finished it, it would add an additional 10 pages to the ap. Nothing against gay people, but shouldn't this also include "gay/not gay"? Just pushing the envelope a bit for conversation.

But I tell you what...the next time I do one for myself I will check the mixed race box because they have no way to distinguish anyway and for the majority of American's...it's true. It seems by checking the "white" box these days, you just sealed your fate. This is one of the reasons I am self employed, and it wasn't by choice. But I do need a job to keep uncle sam off my back!

I made the mistake of checking the "White box" on a job application I filled out at Michigan State University.

A couple of weeks later I called to ask what had happened to the application and was told "it had been thrown in the garbage".

You need to check "other" or "Native American".
