    Thanks for the refresh L.

I agree with speak the truth. Anger is a great motivator when used properly. When I am so angry I can't nicely remain totally calm....sometimes it just helps to be honest and say I am angry about this situation......not AT YOU...at the situation and I'm here for your help and advice as to what to do about this. Or how can I help you to get this going? This seems to be nobodys responsibility and we have to start somewhere. If it's not you I should be speaking to....then who?

How do I keep my outrage from manifesting itself to such people? I know that rage alienates those whom I try to reach, and that I catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar (or so they say). But even if I can hold in my outrage, I'm certain that I must be red in the face and my eyes bulging out.

I can pray and double up on my meds for 24 hours before such meetings. I need to "disassociate" from my victimization, as an advocate would if speaking on my behalf. But that is difficult indeed. Any suggestions?
Why would anyone still be trying to control their rage. We have been way past speaking nicely on this subject for years. In fact we may be past the point of speaking on the subject of Illegal Immigration.

It is long past time for action!

P.S. I don't get the big deal with 287(g) and the training. It didn't seem to take much training to get all of the police in the nation to turn their backs on the problem. All they really need is permission to open their eyes.

As the new Undocumented Attorney General they have my permission!

P.S.P.S. 287(g) does not seem to address the very real problem that the Federal Government doesn't reimburse State and Local Governments for the very real cost of enforcement of the immigration laws. I have gotten very mad at some Police departments in California. During the hearings a couple of the Chiefs voiced their disapproval on the reimbursement. I think at that point I finally understood what they were saying. Maybe I have had them wrong. I still don't like it though.

The local governments turning its back on the problem has spread out the cost somewhat. In a rude sort of way.

Practice a little speech before you go. That way you will know exactly what you want to say and if you catch yourself getting upset, go back to your speech. You can always say excuse me and take a few seconds to collect your thoughts. This will help you get your point across and that's all that matters.

I would never yell, but sometimes using an authoritative voice is not a bad thing. Especially if they are trying to dust you off.

Remember, unless you go totally overboard, you can apologize for being a little rough. Most public figures understand that the public can become very emotional about certain issues. However, they will not tolerate blatant abuse.

    Hope this helps!

As far as the 287(g) program, they have no excuse. You are going into the argument the victor. If they pull the old, got to get funding BS. Tell them you will take up a collection. How many officers do you want to send. I think I read that the training cost just a little over $500 for each officer.

Certainly, you have to control how it manifests itself so that you can stay in an officials' face long enough to educate and negotiate. Try to see benefits to the official. Try to anticipate objections you'll run up against and be prepared. I think you'll be OK with more experience.
That sounds like good advice to me, loservillalabor. Also, if I might add, now that you've presented your Assistant Police Chief with your request/information regarding the implementation of 287(g), it is time to head up the chain-of-command. The reason I say that is, if the Asst. Police Chief doesn't care for the plan, he'll probably just deep six your information packet. Go ahead and submit a packet, with a nice cover letter, to your Police Chief, every member of town council, and the mayor. In other words, leave no stone unturned. Who knows, it would have been well worth the effort if just one of those individuals decides to pick up the ball and run with it. Any council member, or the mayor for that matter, can have the item placed on a council meeting agenda for discussion. Something like this can't just be slam dunked though, it's like a fine whine, it has to be aged a little before the true flavor can be appreciated. The quickest way to turn people off to your suggestion is to force it down their throats as a demand. Persistance tempered with patience is the best way to approach sincere consideration of your request. Just my opinion, for what it is worth.

Minuteman, you have to learn to talk down to them, using many large words and giving a strong and eloquent talk.

By using the "big" words, they will begin to realize that you mean business, besides, most of them have brain damage from being hit in the head with the politically correct club too many times and you will make them act solely based on the fact that they do not want to appear stupid!!

Then you send in a woman who is in her late thirties, has kids who have aggravated the crud out of her all summer long, and is PMS'ing and just got a lewd comment from some illegal that has been loitering on a street corner. Yeah, she will get their attention alright!!!!!!

I'd like to add something here. Give careful thought to who your audience is. This was a long time police officer. Generally, it will be best not to "go off" in their face. fwiw

Some of the people in this thread are right when they say it can be better at times to control your anger and make a request in a nice manner.

    But

I believe that proper etiquette protocol require that you escalate from nice, to angry, to mad as all get out, before you show up in the middle of the night with a mob carrying road flares to light their way and carrying implements of destruction.

That is a blind alley. The local papers are accountable only to local merchants and the Chamber of Commerce. They have rejected everything I have ever given them.

But the front page accounts of local murders by Hispanics say it all.

Exactly! Acting like an idiot will get you exactly that in return. You will be treated like the idiot you are portraying.

When talking to ANYONE on this issue please keep in mind, the more reactionary and lawless you come across, the more law abiding citizens are going to tune you out.

    Yeah, right. Keep hallucinating.
