Murrieta Protesters and Supporters Clash, With No Buses in Sight
Pro-immigration and anti-immigration demonstrators gathered in Murrieta on Friday with one thing in common: they were waiting for expected buses full of undocumented immigrants, that as of Friday afternoon had not arrived. The gathering of about 75 protesters and 100 supporters was "peaceful" at first, according to police, but as the wait dragged on and the temperatures rose, so did tensions. Those opposed to the migrants arriving in the town by bus for processing shouted "Go Home," and were answered by accusations of racism from the opposite side.
Buses of women and children from Central America wereforced to turn around on Tuesday when they were met by protesters who were informed that 140 people could arrive in Murrieta every three days. But the Murrieta Police Departmentsaid they didn't know if, or when, more buses would come through Murrieta. Police still had to send at least a dozen officers to patrol the feuding demonstrators. One man was arrested for crossing the police line, and a woman passed out in the above-90 degree heat, Murrieta police spokesman Dennis Vrooman said.

MURRIETA: Groups gather, but no sign of migrant detainees yet
JULY 4, 2014 BY LIAM TRUCHARD
Protesters on both sides of the immigration issue faced off outside the U.S. Border Patrol Station in Murrieta on Friday, July 4. The groups where waiting for the expected arrival of buses carrying migrants from Central America.Protesters from both sides of the immigration issue continue to wait outside the Border Patrol Station in Murrieta, where more detained migrants are expected to arrive from Texas on Friday, July 4.
The police presence is more noticeable today than earlier in week when three bus loads carrying 140 Central American migrants were turned away by anti-immigration protests. The migrants are being brought to Murrieta from Texas, which has been overwhelmed with the number of Central American immigrants crossing the border. The detainees are being brought to Murrieta for processing.
A dozen Murrieta police officers have stood ready in front of a yellow police tape barricade. They are joined by a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy and several border patrol officers. However, the collection of protesters are disbursed between several locations.
Exchanges between the two groups have been heated at times. Around noon, officers strung new lines of tape around tall traffic cones to separate the crowd and stood between the two sides as the groups shouted at each other.
One man was detained this morning for failing to comply with officers orders, police said. Another woman was given assistance just after 1 p.m. when she was overcome by heat. Temperatures in the area were expected to reach the mid-90s.
Near the station, American flags were waving above the crowd, which includes Aztec dancers and banging drums. Those in favor of letting the migrants in shouted “let our children go, deportation no” and waved signs reading “no human is illegal.”
“We’re just welcoming the children and were going to help them,” said Dianey Murillo, 21, of Riverside. She is part of the Justice for Immigrants Coalition of Inland Southern California, which she said has been collecting donations from churches, college students and other groups eager to help the migrants.
The group will provide food, clothing and travel assistance at multiple shelters. She declined to disclose the locations for gear they would be targeted by anti immigration groups.
Critics of the administration’s plan to give the migrants temporary entrance to the United States played Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” and held yellow signs reading “stop illegal immigration.”
“They’re going to bring a bunch more kids here and we can’t feed our own kids. Our schools can’t support it,” said Shaun Falconer, 52, of Wildomar, who was one of the protesters arguing his point against the other side
Falconer said he doubts many of the migrants will report to immigration authorities as required once they are allowed into the United States.
“This sends a message to their countries that they got in and others will, too,” he said.
South of the station, about 75 anti-immigration protesters are quietly waiting along the expected bus route. Some were sitting in lawn chairs, wearing red, white and blue outfits and holding signs.
The buses have not yet arrived, and there is no schedule for when that will happen.
This story will be updated as events unfold.
