Father Jose Landaverde of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission witnessed the beginning of the operative stated, “I was walking down the street to the office of Alderman Munoz and I observed Immigration Customs officers manhandling Latinos and I approached them to ask why they were doing this… I was then searched and questioned also. These raids that terrorize our community must stop! We are asking Senator Obama & Senator Durbin to STOP these Raids of Terror here in Illinois!!â€

And who do you suppose broke the laws??? That's right the children's parents. Put the blame where it belongs.

Julie Santos Midwest Commissioner LULAC Immigrant Affairs Commission stated, “American children witnessed today in Little Village right here in the United States of America militant force tactics because of the broken laws. Shame on the US Congress and Senate who today have our sons and daughter in Iraq defending the freedom of the Iraqi people, yet the children of Little Village lived through fear today and watched as members of their community were criminalized and stripped of freedom.â€

ICE makes arrests in Chicago's Little Village
    By SOPHIA TAREEN
    (Published September 18, 200

CHICAGO — Federal immigration agents raided several homes and apartment buildings in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Thursday, arresting people who allegedly make fake documents.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman declined to immediately release the number of arrests.

"This ongoing enforcement action is targeting specific individuals allegedly involved in a fraudulent identification document organization operating in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood," said ICE spokeswoman Gail Montenegro.
More information would be available Friday after those arrested have made initial federal court appearances, she said.

Word of the agents' presence spread quickly throughout the heavily Mexican neighborhood as tensions and fear of ICE agents, referred to as "la migra," have been high since a daytime raid on a shopping mall last year.

Activists on the scene Thursday reported that ICE agents stormed buildings, hid in garages and interrogated people on the street.

That included pastor Jose Landaverde, who is a U.S. citizen, but said he always carries his passport out of fear of being asked to prove his identity. He said immigration agents unfairly target Latinos, a claim ICE has disputed.

"They are intimidating the people in the neighborhood," he said. "What they are doing is really terrorism to our community."

Landaverde said some wives of those arrested came to his church, Our Lady of Guadeloupe Anglican Church, on Thursday. A vigil or protest in the neighborhood would be planned for Friday, he said.

Last year, armed ICE agents entered a shopping mall specializing in Mexican goods and foods during the day and locked it down with shoppers inside.

Dozens were arrested and at least 22 people, including a Chicago alderman's father, were charged in a conspiracy to make thousands of fake identification documents like social security cards.

Several individuals have been deported in the case and others are detained.

Many Little Village residents have said they still feel effects of last year's raid. One organization has held writing workshops to help people work through their fears stemming from the raids.

Activists have long criticized raids, including one last month at a Mississippi plant where more than 600 workers were rounded up. It was the largest single-site raid in U.S. history.

Critics claim the raids, which have increased in frequency all over the country, increases mistrust of immigration authorities and are unnecessarily violent.

But federal officials defend the method, citing raids as an effective way to enforce the law and curb illegal activity.

The 2007 investigation on the Chicago mall, called "Operation Paper Tiger," was lauded as a success by many federal officials, including ICE's top official Julie Myers.

"We certainly recognize our obligations that we enforce the law in a humane manner," Myers, the assistant secretary of homeland security for ICE, told The Associated Press in a May interview. "I'm not aware of any enforcement agency that takes the type of steps we take. These individuals have violated our laws, in the case of Paper Tiger, those were all criminal arrests ... relating to very serious activity."

For goodness sakes! Did this guy go to the Juan Hernandez school of journalism with an over-emphasis on the dramatics!

The 'hurricane of terror' began when your beloved illegals entered into our country illegally! Today is simply a clean up operation.

[quote]Little Village is the largest Mexican Community in the City of Chicago. This same community was the target of raids back in April 2007. Also March 2008 another operative was disclosed by community activist with a “MIGRA ALERTâ€

I'm an Illinoisan and these are extraordinary times.

In Waukegan this week they picked up 20 illegal aliens. Today our sheriff held a press conference in Waukegan stating that he did an immigration check in the jail and around 21% of the population are illegal aliens. He is continuing to move forward with the 287g process.

I haven't heard 'on the ground' news yet as to if people are exiting Waukegan because of this recent raid.

Thanks for keeping us informed. That is fascinating...

As an American citizen born to American citizens, may I rejoice in the fear of these people or is that not politically correct? I do not like to live behind locked doors because of fear that some hungry person, mad robber or rapist will break in. I worry that with the increased economic downslide, the illegals especially will be taking advantage of Americans while they wait for the amnesty they believe is forthcoming under either McCain or Obama.
Years ago, scientists overcrowded a rat cage and all of sudden they resorted to killing and even cannibalism. This illegal crap has got to stop.
