John McCain to return to Senate Tuesday for health care vote

John McCain to return to Senate Tuesday for health care vote

(CNN)Sen. John McCain, recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, will make a dramatic return to the Senate Tuesday to cast a critical vote on health care legislation.

McCain's office announced Monday night he will return Tuesday.

His return will amount to a surprise to most Republicans, who expected him to miss the crucial vote and return to Washington at a later date. But he could help the GOP deliver a critical vote to begin debating health care legislation, which is on the verge of collapsing.

"Senator McCain looks forward to returning to the United States Senate tomorrow to continue working on important legislation, including health care reform, the National Defense Authorization Act, and new sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea," his office said in a statement.

The Arizona Republican underwent brain surgery earlier this month and announced last week he has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Just hours before the announcement was made, McCain's colleagues expressed doubts that he'd be in the chamber in time for the vote.

"I don't have any expectation at this point," Sen. John Thune told reporters earlier Monday. "And I don't know that anyone else I talked to does."

McCain's arrival back to the Senate, however, doesn't guarantee leaders will have the votes they need to begin debate. With McCain back in Washington, McConnell can now afford to lose just two of his members.

McCain needs to resign and turn his Senate seat over to someone that can fully focus on the job while he fully focuses on surviving serious cancer.

McCain is not going to survive this cancer. This is a glioblastoma:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glioblastoma#Prognosis

The most common length of survival following diagnosis is 12 to 15 months, with fewer than 3% to 5% of people surviving longer than five years. Without treatment survival is typically 3 months.

Increasing age (> 60 years of age) carries a worse prognostic risk. Death is usually due to widespread tumor infiltration with cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure.

    ....
It doesn't matter much what he does at this point. Time is running out for him not matter what he does. The question at this point is whether he wants to die in office or not. If he really cares about what he is doing, he will be making some effort to insure that his politics in his state endure after he is gone. That might mean holding on to the reins as long as he can.

Ted Kennedy also had a glioblastoma and it finally got him fifteen months after it was diagnosed, but Kennedy's tumor hit him pretty fast and hard. It was first diagnosed inoperable:

McCain's tumor was discovered after surgery for a blood clot, this was a lucky break:

Didn't I read or hear somewhere that the tumor actually caused the blood clot?

I hadn't heard that, but it isn't hard to imagine.
