Latinos in Southern California Schools More Segregated Now Than in 1970, Report Says

A report released Friday says that Hispanic students have been segregated in Southern California schools not only for their ethnic origin but also because of factors like poverty and language.

"This research shows that throughout Southern California, the opportunity gaps between schools with varying racial concentrations are staggering," said John Kuscera, a co-author of "Divided We Fail: Segregation and Inequality in the Southland's Schools."

The report says that while in 1970 the average Latino student in metro Los Angeles attended a school that was 45 percent white, in 2008 the Hispanic student in the region attended a school where only 6 percent of students were white.

"Today, more than two out of five Latino students and nearly one-third of all black students in the region enroll in intensely segregated learning environments - schools where 90 percent to 100 percent of students are from underrepresented minority backgrounds," according to the report from the The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA.

Conversely, only 5 percent of Asian students in Southern California attend extremely segregated schools.

The CRP study is the first to analyze patterns of registration and segregation, results of university enrollment and disparities of educational opportunities across the region.

To that end, information was used from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura counties.

The report says that in middle or high schools where more than 80 percent of the students are Hispanics, black or native Americans, practically all the students live below the federal poverty line.

Though white students make up 25 percent of the total in the Southland area, most of them attend schools where close to 50 percent of the students are white, "a figure that highlights persistent patterns of white isolation across the region."

With regard to community college and university entrance, the research shows that only 22 percent of students from schools with minority populations of 90 percent or greater get into institutes of higher learning the next fall after they graduate from high school, in comparison with 43 percent of students from white- or Asian-majority high schools.

"There is almost no public discussion of segregation in Southern California though the differences in schools and neighborhoods one or two freeway exits apart are often shocking," CRP Co-director Gary Orfield said.

BS. My grandchildren go to school in SoCal and almost all of the schools are 85% hispanic. It might seem they are segregated but they have overtacken our cities and have filled our schools. Whites don't have a chance to go to good schools as they are all filled with hispanics where most could care less about an education. Their parents don't care as they seem to think it is entirely the teachers responsiblity. When parents don't understand English or speak broken English, they can't help their kids do good in school as they are themsleves uneducated. We are turning into a third world country from both south america and the arab countries. When will we get leadership in that will stop this maddness. We need leadership that love this country, not try to destroy it. Our face is changing and we can't seem to stop it.

Why are illegal immigrants allowed to attend schools in this Country to be "segregated" and how do they pay for educations when it is illegal to obtain jobs in the U.S. undocumented? Above all, where are the laws to prevent such unlawful actions from occurring?

Heres the deal

I was in public schools in the 70s in So Cal

We had no more than 20 latino students in my high school

There was one square block in Anaheim that was the barrio
There were 0 blacks in my high school

Now the Latino students in my high school all hung out together , I hung with the stoners , the jocks had their group

The latinos while staying in their own group were cool with us , we never had any problem with them at all

But they did hang together

You can have all the studies you want , you can promote diversity , you can promote any lib garbage you want , but animals (yes we are) always hang together , Its in our genes , No amount of diversity training is ever going to change that , not ever

Most of us all have friends that are Black or Hispanic , or Asian or whatever , but for the most part , they hang with their race or ethnicity
I'm not saying that in a demeaning manner either , People just feel more comfortable doing it,

I use to have a band with a 4th generation Asian drummer , he hung out all the time and loved grilled bratswurst

We are becoming a 3rd world society simply by illegal invasion and uncontrolled federal govt allowed immigration

Lets bring in another 50k Somalis , or another 100k Palestinians , or allow 30 K from a Peruvian earthquake

This is because there are no Whites left in the areas the illegal invaders colonize! What the hell do you expect! These people colonize an area and then complain when there are no Whites left to go to school with them!
