I think they use to have to apply for citizenship like anyone else, but usually got their papers pushed ahead if they served in the military. Now they are talking it will be automatic.

it was not always so damn easy for foreigners...

as a legal immigrant and college student I did ROTC in college and was scheduled to do BOOTCAMP between Sophomore and Junior year... I was refused because I was not (yet) a citizen.... and had to wait until after graduation AND citizenship papers in hand, to do to boot camp...

then the KENNEDY BROTHERS tore the immigration standards apart in 1965... and the rest is ..... a calamity!....

They are already in the military. I have a friend and a relative in two branches. They say they are there.

Illegal immigrants aren't knowingly being accepted for enlistment. Green card holders who meet the eligibility requirements are authorized to enlist. However, the available quotas for these folks are limited. The separate branches of the military have different quota limits. The U.S. Army is the easiest branch of service for a non-U.S. citizen to enlist into. Of course the Army is the largest branch of service, plus they are having a difficult time making their monthly goals because of the Iraq situation. Currrently the eligibility requirement for enlistment in the U.S. Army is probably lower than it's been since the Vietnam conflict. In other words, they are accepting more non-H.S. graduates, you can be a little fatter, a little shorter, less physically fit, and score lower on the entrance exam. Standards were at the highest rate in our history prior to the Iraq conflict. Unfortunately, during the Clinton administration our active duty military forces were reduced a considerable amount through early-outs, early-retirements, the enactment of tougher reenlistment standards, and reduced recruitment goals. The military is the first place Democrats look when they need extra money to fund social service programs and the like. Historically the military has always been better funded under Republican Presidents.

Rome did this very same thing with the Visigoths. The well-fed Roman citizens were too busy partying and enjoying la dolce vita to bother with defending their country, so they hired barbarians from the north to protect their borders.

Unfortunately, after two generations, these mercenaries sacked Rome and sped the empire on its way to decline. I always thought this country would meet its end a little more intelligently than it has been showing lately.
