    Officials still have to notify families of remaining victims. None of those identified are active-duty military personnel.

    Officials have identified seven of the 12 victims in Monday's fatal shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard.

    NAVY YARD SHOOTING: 13 dead

    They are, according to Washington's Metropolitan Police Department: Michael Arnold, 59; Sylvia Frasier, 53; Kathy Gaarde, 62; John Roger Johnson, 73; Frank Kohler, 50; Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46; and Vishnu Pandit, 61.

    Details about their lives are beginning to emerge.

    None of the victims have been identified as active-duty military personnel, officials said.

    Officials still need to notify the loved ones of the five remaining victims.

    An additional victim was identified by the Washington Post as Arthur Daniels, 51.

    Michael Arnold's profile on LinkedIn, an online professional network, identified Arnold as a logistician and supply chain executive with LMI, a consulting firm based in McLean, Va., and said he was a graduate of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

    For 29 years, Arnold, recently of Lorton, Va., was a Navy supply corps officer before working at the Pentagon from 2010 to 2012, according to the profile.

    His uncle, Steven Hunter, told the Associated Press that his nephew was an avid pilot who was building a light airplane at his home. "It would have been the first plane he ever owned," Hunter told the AP in a telephone interview from Rochester, Mich., Arnold's hometown. "It's partially assembled in his basement."

    According to the AP, citing a LinkedIn profile in her name, Sylvia Frasier had worked at Naval Sea Systems Command as an information assurance manager since 2000.

    Frasier studied at Strayer University, earning a bachelor of science in computer information systems in 2000 and a master's in information systems in 2002. Her duties at NAVSEA included providing policy and guidance on network security, and assuring that all computer systems operated by the headquarters met Department of Navy and Department of Defense requirements.

    Kathy Gaarde, a financial analyst from Woodbridge, Va, was a Washington Capitals fan, and devoted wife and mother of two, neighbor and friend Patrick Bolton told thePost.

    "The mother was just the kindest lady in the world," Bolton told the news organization. "I've never seen her do anything but nice things for people."
    Gaarde's husband, Douglass, wrote an email to the AP early Tuesday. "Today my life partner of 42 years (38 of them married) was taken from me, my grown son and daughter, and friends," he wrote. "We were just starting to plan our retirement activities and now none of that matters. It hasn't fully sunk in yet but I know I already dearly miss her."

    No information was immediately available for John Roger Johnson.

    A neighbor of Frank Kohler's in St. Mary's County, Md., on the Chesapeake Bay, told the Post Kohler was married with two daughters.

    Kenneth Proctor worked as a civilian utilities foreman at the Navy Yard, his ex-wife, Evelyn Proctor, told the AP. He spent 22 years working for the federal government, Evelyn Proctor said.

    "He just went in there in the morning for breakfast," she told the AP, speaking Monday of the building where the shooting took place. "He didn't even work in the building. It was a routine thing for him to go there in the morning for breakfast, and unfortunately it happened."

    Online records identified a Vishnu Pandit in his 60s living in North Potomac, Md. A person who answered the telephone at the address said, "Please tell your colleagues not to call."

    Neighbor Mike Honig told the Post that Pandit was "a very nice man with an Irish setter."

    Witness describes Navy Yard shooting

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    • NEW: Names of all 12 victims in Navy Yard shooting released
    • Some families wait for word on whether their loved one is alive
    • A wounded police officer asked to call mom before surgery, doctor says

    (CNN) -- They were civilians and contractors, just starting their day at a massive military compound that's normally a bastion of safety.
    But for reasons that may never be known, a former Navy reservist cut their lives short when he went on a shooting rampage at Washington's Navy Yard on Monday. Twelve families were left anguished.
    About 3,000 people work at the Naval Sea Systems Command, and the Navy secretary said Monday it could take a full day before everyone is accounted for.
    Jacqueline Alston hadn't heard from her husband, Ernest, who is a custodial worker there.

    Who was Aaron Alexis?

    "Right now, I'm asking God to let me hear that voice, to let me see that man again."
    Fatalities: 12
    On Monday night, officials identified seven of the 12 victims killed:
    • Michael Arnold, 59, of Lorton, Virginia;
    • Sylvia Frasier, 53, of Waldorf, Maryland;
    • Kathy Gaarde, 62, of Woodbridge, Virginia;
    • John Roger Johnson, 73, of Derwood, Maryland;
    • Frank Kohler, 50, of Tall Timbers, Maryland;
    • Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46, of Waldorf, Maryland;
    • Vishnu Shalchendia Pandit, 61, of North Potomac, Maryland;
    • Arthur Daniels, 51, of Southeast Washington, D.C.;
    • Mary Francis Knight, 51, of Reston, Virginia;
    • Gerald L. Read, 58, of Alexandria, Virginia;
    • Martin Bodrog, 54, of Annandale, Virginia;
    • Richard Michael Ridgell, 52, of Westminster, Maryland.

    Opinion: What could have prevented Navy Yard carnage?
    Injuries: 8
    At least eight others were also injured, Washington Mayor Vincent Gray told reporters Monday night.

    Three were shot, including a woman who was struck in the head but miraculously survived. The bullet did not penetrate her skull.
    The others were hospitalized for contusions and chest pain.
    Among the injured is Washington Metropolitan Police Officer Scott Williams, who underwent surgery Monday afternoon for gunshot wounds to the lower legs.
    Doctors will try to determine Tuesday whether he'll be able to use his legs again.
    "He was most concerned about being able to talk to his mother and wanted to make sure he was able to speak to her before he went into surgery," said Dr. Janis Orlowski, chief medical officer at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
    Wounded survivors are eligible for treatment at a U.S. military' hospital, just as if they were soldiers wounded in war.
    U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said that Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, is open to them.
    What is security like at the Navy Yard?
    Heroes: Many
    Amid the tragedy, tales of survival and heroism emerged.
    A maintenance worker who tried to warn others was among those shot, said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Tim Jirus.
    Jirus was standing in an alley at the bottom of a fire escape supervising the evacuation of Building 197 when the shooter approached him.
    "(The maintenance worker) walked up and told me that he heard that there was a shooter in our building," Jirus said. "And we were just standing there maybe three feet away having a conversation, and then we heard two more gunshots, and he went down and that's when I ran."
    Jirus said he did not know the man. He was "fairly certain he is dead, because he was shot in the head."
    "I don't feel lucky that he got hit instead of me, but I feel lucky to be here," Jirus said.
    Witness: 'He aimed his gun at us' and fired
    People who want to check on family members who may have been at the Navy Yard can call one of two numbers: 202-433-6151 and 202-433-9713.

    "Two federal officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Associated Press that Alexis had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a handgun that he took from a police officer at the scene."

    Contrary to earlier reports provided by law enforcement officials, Alexis was not believed to be in possession of an AR-15 rifle, the official said.
