CDC remove 2 from Newark flight after possible Ebola scare

    ABC
    Saturday, October 04, 2014
    NEWARK --
CDC officials have removed passengers from a plane that landed in Newark Saturday afternoon following a possible Ebola scare.

United flight 998 from Brussels landed at Newark Airport and has been met by Centers for Disease Control officials based in Newark after passengers on board, believed to be from Liberia, exhibited possible signs of Ebola.

An official, who had been briefed on the situation, said the passenger was "vomiting on flight but did not display most of the other symptoms."

"He's now being treated with protocols as if he has it but no clear indication at this point that he does," the official said.

The flight was scheduled to land around noon.

Officials with the CDC removed two passengers from the plane. A man had been traveling with his daughter and both were escorted by a CDC crew in full HAZMAT gear. They were taken to University Hospital where the emergency room will not accept anyone else for four hours.

The airline issued a statement about the flight confirming that crew needed to assist an ill customer. "Upon arrival at Newark Airport from Brussels, medical professionals instructed that customers and crew of United flight 988 remain on board until they could assist an ill customer. We are working with authorities and will accommodate our customers as quickly as we can," said a statement from the airline."

Other passengers remained aboard but were eventually allowed to deplane around 2 p.m. at Terminal B.

A doctor coming through the Customs area said an announcement was made to direct everyone aboard flight 998 to move to a separate area of Customs. There is a reported bottleneck inside the passport control area.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials scrambled to meet a United Airlines flight from Brussels at Newark Airport on Saturday after a passenger believed to be from Liberia exhibited signs of Ebola.

Almost 300 passengers on United Airlines flight 998 were held at the terminal for more than an hour after the Boeing 777-200 twin engine jet arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport just after 12 pm.

“The crew reported that a person was vomiting, and that Liberians were aboard the plane,” a law enforcement source told The Post.

“The person throwing up is believed to be Liberian,” the source said.

CDC officials rushed to the jet, which had just completed a seven-hour flight across the Atlantic.

Officials removed a father and daughter from the plane, and they were taken to quarantine at University Hospital in Newark, the law enforcement source said.

The remaining 261 people on board were cleared to go through customs, the source said.

The plane landed at Gate 53, Terminal B.

It is unclear how many Liberians are on the plane. Brussels airlines had a Friday night flight out of Monrovia, Liberia’s capital; that flight connected to United Airlines, according to online records.

    Answer: Obama's open border policy.

There are sensible precautions that we could take - I listed them in an earlier post - to limit the potential damage from Ebola, but undoing a belief system which tells Americans that this country can be forced to accept anybody who can sneak in is far more dangerous.
