How Donald Trump helped save New York City

    By Steve Cuozzo
    February 7, 2016 | 6:00am

Long before Donald Trump stamped his name in gold on buildings around the world, posted snarky midnight tweets and joined the race for the White House, he was New York’s most important and bravest real-estate developer.

Whatever you think about his political views or crazy campaign, Trump doesn’t get enough credit for being a transformative planner who is in love with the city.

No matter how many times they watch “Taxi Driver,” younger New Yorkers and older ones who arrived recently have no idea of what the city was actually like in the mid-1970s through the mid-’90s. Notwithstanding Studio 54 and a short-lived Wall Street boom, the metropolis was reeling. Rampant street crime, AIDS, corporate flight and physical decay brought confidence to an all-time low.

Trump waded into a landscape of empty Fifth Avenue storefronts, the dust-bowl mugging ground that was Central Park and a Wall Street area seemingly on its last legs as companies moved out.

Except in Battery Park City, which was then as remote as an offshore island, few other developers built anything but plain-vanilla office and apartment buildings. Trump — almost by force of will — rode to the rescue. Expressing rare faith in the future, he was instrumental in kick-starting the regeneration of neighborhoods and landmarks almost given up for dead.

Many of his brainstorms were ahead of their time. Some — like his struggle beginning in the early 1970s to build what’s now called Riverside South — were so far ahead, it can be hard to connect the dots between Trump’s works and the neighborhood transformations they spawned and inspired years later.

His brick-and-mortar milestones are lost on those who know him mainly as a cartoonish TV personality, or are weary of his self-promotion and his omnipresent name on hotels, golf courses and casinos around the world.

Trump himself is largely to blame for being a prophet without honor in his home city. He grew weary of the risky, time-consuming development grind and started selling his name to just about any developer willing to sign a check. The result was horrible projects like the Trump Soho Hotel which he neither built nor owns.

His disastrous foray into Atlantic City casinos — Why, Donald? — his tacky promotion of China-made shirts and ties among other goofy ventures further cheapened his name.

The regrettable result is that Trump’s true legacy is obscured in pointless scrutiny of what he “really owns” and schadenfreude over setbacks such as losing the Plaza Hotel and the Riverside South complex which he brought into being. (Trump was a better developer than he was a dealmaker, his books on the subject to the contrary.)

A more enlightened yardstick would measure what Trump created and how the projects lifted all boats around them. It’s time to commemorate them before he’s lost to the presidency — or to the mercy of late-night TV comedians.

Here’s a look at Trump’s game-changing Manhattan monuments and their legacies.

    1. Riverside South, 1997-2004

Trump’s least-appreciated accomplishment, the 16-building complex including a new public park along the Hudson River from West 59th-72nd streets is too often called a Trump failure. He scaled down his original master plan over community opposition; he needed partners to bankroll it; and then, deep in debt, sold out to other developers. But Trump created Riverside South, home to over 10,000 people on a former rail yard site. He acquired land rights in the 1970s; finessed a zoning change from development-averse mayor David Dinkins in 1992; and built the site’s first seven towers. They’re emblazoned with his name for good reason.

    2. Trump International Hotel and Tower, Columbus Circle, 1995-97

This was the first project to reclaim Columbus Circle from the vagrants. The hated former Gulf + Western Building needed a new skin and a new image. The owners tapped Trump to figure out how. His gleaming glass facade and all-new interior yielded an Upper West Side gateway edifice. Luxury condos sold out, the hotel was hailed as among the city’s best, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s flagship restaurant drew gourmands from around the world. Its success paved the way for Time Warner Center and the Museum of Arts and Design.

    3. Wollman Skating Rink, Central Park, 1986

Although the Central Park Conservancy had begun to restore ruined sections of the crime-ridden park, the long-closed ice rink remained a gaping black hole. The city couldn’t finish it after six years of work, and there was no end in sight. Trump rebuilt it in a few months in part to embarrass his nemesis, Mayor Ed Koch. But its impact transcended personality by drawing families and kids to the heart of the park’s “postcard” southern end.

    4. 40 Wall Street, purchased by Trump in 1995

The landmark Art Deco masterpiece was a vacant, ruined hulk when Trump bought it for a token $1 million. Companies were fleeing the financial district’s obsolete old towers at the time. Trump’s restoration and marketing savvy swiftly drew tenants and stabilized the area — an inspiration that helped put the area back on its feet in the years before 9/11.

    5. Trump Plaza, 167 E. 61st St., completed 1984

Third Avenue north of Bloomingdale’s was a lost highway of tenements and boxy, bland apartment buildings after the el was torn down in the 1950s. Trump’s 39-story, trefoil-shaped co-op tower of limestone, glass and shimmering bronze boasted a welcoming retail base which respected the classic Manhattan “street wall” — repudiating pedestrian-hostile setback design which was then in vogue. It inspired four more similarly configured towers on the avenue and lent some badly needed class to uptown east of Lexington Avenue.

    6. Trump World Tower, 845 United Nations Plaza, opened 2001

The condo spire rising 90 stories on First Avenue near the UN was at first detested for its height (and for blocking neighbors’ views). But the bronze glass monolith earned praise from architectural critics. Its impact went beyond looks. Its creative merger of property lots zoned for different uses was unprecedented at the time. Its appeal to the globetrotting rich presaged era-defining later projects like 15 Central Park West and 432 Park Ave.

    7. Trump Tower, Fifth Avenue at 56th Street, opened 1983

As the city descended into an abyss of crime and corporate flight, nobody thought of erecting a new skyscraper on Fifth Avenue — except Trump. It perfected the three-way, mixed-use model: condo apartments, office floors and a shopping atrium. An immediate hit with the public, it shone as a beacon of hope for “the world’s greatest shopping street,” which was increasingly full of phony antique dealers and empty storefronts. Trump’s vision would be vindicated years later when the avenue recaptured its old glory.

    8. Grand Hyatt Hotel, 109 E. 42nd St., 1979-80 (Times Square and Broadway Theater District)

An X-rated “massage parlor” stood in the lobby of the gloomy Commodore Hotel — symptomatic of East 42nd Street’s decline. Trump, the hotel project’s prime mover, replaced the brick facade with curtain-wall glass, designed a modern high-end hotel inside and made it attractive for tourism and business. It arrested the street’s tailspin and set the stage for Grand Central Terminal’s restoration in the 1990s.

I report this article here so people will know if they didn't and remember if they've forgotten that the Times Square Theater District where the Hamilton play is performed was a run down, outdated, disgusting area of drug dealers, hookers ad homeless people before Donald Trump decided to undertake redevelopment of this area of New York with his Grand Hyatt Hotel Project. New York City was one of my marketing territories during the 70's, 80's and 90's. To have been there before his work which I was and taking taxis to and fro because it wasn't safe to walk and to be there after his project and all the other development it triggered is an awesome improvement to witness. For anyone from Broadway Theater District to say anything negative about Donald Trump let alone attacking Mike Pence because he's Trump's Vice President just proves their ignorance and bias. Just because you have a stage in the arts doesn't mean you have a good point to make, and in this case the cast of the Hamilton crew had no point at all. They've not only disgraced their trade, they've disgraced themselves trying to demean the man who at great risk and with great vision revitalized the very area in which they work that made it beautiful, safe and economically successful.

There is probably nothing worse or more unattractive if not hideous than Arrogance Without Merit. And that is what the Hamilton cast and owners displayed with their "conversation". The last time I checked a "conversation" is a two-way dialogue in the presence of someone. Mike Pence had already left the theater and was in the hallway, he wasn't given a chance to get on the stage with the Hamilton cast and have a "conversation", no, he was attacked, insulted and lectured from a stage they controlled after he had already left the room.

Mike Pence being attacked attending a play on Broadway and cops called on a Starbucks customer who wanted a Trump cup. This is not equality, this is not grace, this isn't even business. It's just wrong.

Broadway Union Takes Issue With ‘Hamilton’ Casting Call For ‘Non-White’ Performers

    March 29, 2016 11:18 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The hottest show on Broadway has won praise for its groundbreaking casting of black and Latino performers, but now, “Hamilton” may have run afoul of the strict New York City Human Rights Law.

As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, the controversy was sparked by a casting notice posted by the producers of “Hamilton,” which specifically seeks “non-white” performers.

One critic said “Hamilton” takes a story that “valorizes dead white guys” and replaces it with black, Latino and multi-ethnic performers playing America’s founding fathers.

But as the blockbuster musical looks to expand to other cities, the casting notice with its call for “non-white” performers looks problematic to civil rights attorney Randolph McLaughlin.

“What if they put an ad out that said, ‘Whites only need apply?’” said McLaughlin, of the Newman Ferrara Law Firm. “Why, African-Americans, Latinos, Asians would be outraged.”

McLaughlin believes the ad violates the New York City Human Rights Law, which makes it unlawful “for an employer… because of the actual written or perceived… race of any person, to discriminate.”

“You cannot advertise showing that you have a preference for one racial group over another,” McLaughlin said. “As an artistic question – sure, he can cast whomever he wants to cast, but he has to give every actor eligible for the role an opportunity to try.”

That is also the policy of Actors Equity, the Broadway union, which says, “…producers agree that auditions for all productions… will be conducted in such a manner as to provide full and fair consideration to actors of all ethnicities.”

The press representative for the show told CBS2’s Aiello the language in the notice, “seeking non-white performers,” was approved by Actors Equity.

But the union general counsel denied that, saying such language was not and would not be approved. And in fact, the audition notice approved by the union welcomes performers of “all ethnicities” to audition, which is posted on the site Backstage.com.

Producer Jeffrey Seller defended the diversity of the “Hamilton” cast and the legality of the “non-white” casting notice.

“I stand by it and believe it to be legal,” he said.

The city Commission on Human Rights said it has not received a complaint about the ad, and would not say if it is investigating.

In recent years, the city has fined restaurants for advertising for “busboys” and “waitresses” instead of “bus help” and “wait staff.” In this case, a source told CBS2’s Aiello the commission would likely work with the “Hamilton” production team to help it comply with city law if it takes issue with the ad.

‘HAMILTON,’ WITH HISTORY OF LEFT-WING ACTIVISM, SINGLES OUT PENCE FOR LECTURE
‘We are the diverse Americans anxious you will not protect us’
    Nov 19, 2016

The cast and audience at Broadway's "Hamilton" booed and heckled Vice President-Elect Mike Pence Friday night after he stopped by the popular show for an evening of entertainment.

Upon walking in -- Secret Service detail in tow -- onlookers in the audience began heckling and booing the current governor of Indiana.

Toward the show's conclusion, the cast gathered on stage to single out Pence and speak to him about why their "diverse" cast was "alarmed and anxious."

"We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights," Hamilton's Brandon Victor Dixon said. "But truly we hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us, all of us."

This is not the first time politics have erupted during a "Hamilton" performance.
In May, the show's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, attacked Donald Trump's "anti-immigration rhetoric" during a commencement address at UPenn.

"In a year when politicians traffic in anti-immigrant rhetoric," he said, "there is also a Broadway musical reminding us that a broke, orphan immigrant from the West Indies built our financial system, a story that reminds us that since the beginning of the great unfinished symphony that is our American experiment, time and time again, immigrants get the job done!”

Miranda performed “Alexander Hamilton,” at the White House in 2009, and soon became a regular. President Obama has invited him on several occasions to perform, including a freestyle rap with the president himself. Obama later took credit for the show's success. "The truth is, they do owe me," he joked. “From what I hear,” Questlove, who produced the cast album, told Billboard, “the president won't cease to let you know that: ‘The White House is where it began.’”

In September Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was greeted with boos during his attendance at the show, Page Six reported.

After the terrorist attack at an Orlando nightclub in June, the Hamilton cast announced it would no longer use fake muskets in its performances.

And in March, the show courted controversy after issuing a call for "non-white" actors.

It looks like and sounds like that the Hamilton cast is a pro-illegal alien, anti-Israel organization of very rude people without any manners, grace, class or in this case, cause.

So if someone pays to go see a Football Game are all the members of the Team allowed to go out on the field and do that same thing to an audience member?

This is inappropriate, rude, outrages and uncalled for to harass an audience member...no matter who that person is.

Perhaps the citizenship status of the cast members should be investigated, since they seem to be so in favor of illegal immigration? Perhaps some of them are illegal aliens?

How Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda Helped Hillary

    by CHARLIE SPIERING
    20 Nov 2016
    566 comments

On July 12, Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda stood up at his show and welcomed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to his show.

“This November, the difference could not be more stark, who do you think is going to get closer to those ideals?” he asked, referring to the Constitution and the founding fathers. “Are you going to vote for the guy who wants to build a wall, or for someone who’s building bridges?”

Miranda introduced Clinton as “the forty-fifth president of the United States” as she took the stage to address the crowd.

Why? Because it was a private fundraiser. Miranda hosted a special performance of the show exclusively for donors to Clinton’s presidential campaign. Tickets ranged from $2,700 to a whopping $100,000.

“I have now seen it three times, first at the Public and twice here, and I cry every time,” Clinton said.

Miranda tweeted a photo of himself with both Bill and Hillary Clinton urging America to “include women in the sequel” of the American story.

    2:11 PM - 12 Jul 2016

Clinton even quoted the play during her acceptance speech at the Democratic National convention.

“Though ‘we may not live to see the glory,’ as the song from the musical ‘Hamilton’ goes, ‘let us gladly join the fight.’ Let our legacy be about ‘planting seeds in a garden you never get to see,'” Clinton said.

Miranda has fiercely opposed Trump, even referring to him as “First National F*ckface,” and repeatedly criticizing his rhetoric on illegal immigrants.

During his appearance on Saturday Night Live in October, Manuel suggested that Trump was a “piece of shit” and said that Trump was “never gonna be president.”

    But that’s not all.

Miranda also helped Clinton host a “Broadway for Hillary” event that raised even more money for her campaign as tickets ranged from $45 to $100,000.

He performed a parody of the song Ten Duel Commandments, changing into a pro-Hillary anthem.

    Lyrics below:

    One-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine
There are ten things you need to do (number one!)

You register to vote and it’s on
You post that Hillary sign up on your lawn (number two!)

Call some undecideds in your crew
Your cousins in Ohio maybe try and flip ‘em blue (number three!)

    Watch Hillary examine the terrain
Watch her campaign with the man Tim Kaine
    Tim Kaine in the membrane
Tim Kaine in the brain (number four!)

    Hillary makes each decision
Looking at the world from a rarefied position
A public servant with tenacity, agility
Mi gente, experience is not a liability (number five!)

Now we all know this is the time
When the other side tries to fly low we go high (six!)

We know that our Hillary is no quitter
We watch as her opponent sits and fiddles with his Twitter (seven!)

Confession time? All in a burst
I want to vote for a candidate who puts our kids first (November 8!)

    Your last chance to participate
Roll up to your polling place, vote up in your home state
It’s down to the nitty gritty
Three weeks to go, are you ready New York City?

Yes, in a world gone berserk
Hillary rolls up her sleeves and goes to work!
I have only one overwhelming feeling
Anybody here wanna shatter a glass ceiling? (nine!)

Look them in the eye, clear your throat
Summon all the time you can devote
    Then count (one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight-nine-number-ten, paces, vote!)

Since the hot Broadway show debuted, every liberal politician has struggled for a piece of the show and Miranda’s celebrity.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama filmed a video lavishing praise on the show at the Tony Awards.

Manuel, who visited the White House in 2009 to perform beat poetry for the Obamas, also performed a free-style music video with Obama at the White House.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that Manuel chose to insert his politics into his hit Broadway musical.

After the crew learned that Pence would attend, Manuel wrote the speech that criticized Vice President-elect Mike Pence, delivered on the show by actor Brandon Victor Dixon.

“You know, we have a guest in the audience this evening — Vice President-elect Pence, I see you walking out but I hope you hear just a few more moments,” Dixon said, encouraging everyone to pull out their phones and tweet the speech to the world.

Dixon warned Pence that “the diverse America” was “alarmed and anxious” the the Trump administration would not protect them.

Manuel is currently on a widespread media tour to promote the Disney movie Moana, as he wrote the music for the film that opens in theaters on November 23.
