Thread: The NEW Republican Party

This letter to the Editor appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal. It can be found at www.journalnow.com. I think it expresses perfectly the direction in which the Republican Party has moved.

The religious right have captured the soul of the Republican Party. And they want more. George Grant, a fundamentalist preacher in Tennessee, writes in The Changing of the Guard, Biblical Principles for Political Action, "Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ - to have dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness." That belief smacks of theocracy. It presents a threat to our constitutional principle separating church and state.

Separation of church and state has served our great nation well. It has ensured philosophical and religious freedom for all Americans. Americans have the right to join or not join any church they desire. Fundamentalists even have the right to practice and preach their religious beliefs. But the fundamentalists want more. They want public policy to be based on their religious beliefs. That is dangerous to a democratic society. The religious right must be politically defeated in order to ensure liberty for all our citizens.

It's scary....these folks need to go back underground.

It is absolutely SCARY. But, I swear--this is REALLY what is happening. I feel it in my GUT. They are doing everything they can to CONTROL our government and, Judy, Bush is bowing to their demands. And, I'm not even sure that there aren't many others in the party who are doing the same. I think I fear this as much, if not more, than any other threat out there because it will have such far-reaching effects on our democracy.

Allow me to disagree.

Anything concerning our government is our topic, W. The ways and whys of our government go right back to why they are not STOPPING ILLEGAL ALIENS from crossing our borders or SECURING OUR BORDERS, NORTH AND SOUTH.

You should be able to see that, my friend.

Every other American does.

That was what I had in mind when I posted that, good12me. After all, all of the discussion topics are related to illegal immigration either DIRECTLY or INDIRECTLY. I didn't see how Frist's changing his mind on stem cell research or John Bolton's appointment to the UN actually were DIRECTLY related to illegal immigration but, at some point, it all comes back to the things that concern ALL OF US on this forum and that is the SAFETY and SECURITY of our country.

If I've misunderstood the purpose of the group, I'm sorry.

The destruction of the GOP, by itself may not be important to us.

BUT, it may be a textbook example of how pandering to the invasion will destroy a party.

Will their be anyone left to use that example and pick up the pieces?

There are no conservatives left in the GOP (almost).

To bad the invasion will destroy more than just the two parties.

(and the Dem. party WILL be destroyed by the invasion)

No, there will be no one left. It's sad that it's come to this BUT it's what we have to work with at this point. What it boils down to is that we have two major parties--both of which have moved off the spectrum in opposite directions and it leaves a vast majority of us homeless.

So, it seems to me to be VITAL to our cause to try to bring some sanity back to the political parties that exist or pray for a viable alternative.

The American Family Association is just one group that has been bombarding Christians nationally by snail mail and email asking them to send faxes, emails, etc. just like NumbersUSA, FAIR, CapWiz, Alipac, etc. does, asking them to come together to unite for "their cause" be it stopping homosexual shows on TV, homosexual marriage passage in Congress or a number of different things that they feel are paramount to their "AGENDA". In their eyes, their agenda is just as important to them as ours is to us.

They want to save what they perceive to be The American Family. We want to save what we feel is the United States of America so The American Family can have a decent place to live. The difference in The American Family Association seeking members and Alipac seeking members to heighten awareness of their agendas?

NONE!

An idea might be that Alipac should approach the American Family Association, inform them of what illegal aliens are doing to our youth, implore them to join us in our battle against illegal aliens and their youth gangs. It seems to me that the American Family Association could be a powerful ally in our fight to stop criminal illegal aliens and the fact they are trying to take over our land and our YOUTH!!

In the Bible Belt, which we are smack in the middle of in NC, Christians can do alot and they carry lots of weight. I'd prefer they were with Alipac instead of against us.

We can use all the help we can get to stop the mass influx of criminal illegal alien economic terrorists!

My point was that we need a UNITED front SOMEWHERE to defeat what is happening to our country. That includes many things other than illegal immigration. The "free" trade agreements would be another central issue that we fight in this forum not only because we feel that it would increase illegal immigration but because we suffer for all of the lost jobs created by these agreements. Same with globalization.

We spend a lot of time in the discussion groups discussing who we can elect that would support our causes and it just seems pertinent to point out all of the schisms that are occurring in BOTH MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES. I mean--we HAVE to have SOMEONE for whom we can vote so limiting discussion to one topic seems pointless. I don't think any one of us would vote for any person who was running with whom we only agreed on their position on illegal immigration. If that were the case, we would be pretty narrow-minded.
