Press reports quote Brewer as saying after the meeting, she wants to "secure the border first" then discuss other issues (i.e., amnesty). So she is basically taking the same position as McCain, Kyl, Cornyn et al. Although I would rather have her take the secure the border period/attrition position, I'm pleased that she is still standing behind her law and (at last at this time) is apparently not buying into Obama's CIR amnesty scheme.

Brewer has more balls and more brains than any other governor in the country.
    NO AMNESTY

PHOENIX - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer emerged from a high-profile meeting with President Obama Thursday, saying she's encouraged by promises of more troops and resources at the state's southern border.

The Governor met with the President in the Oval Office for about 30 minutes, with both sides agreeing their staff members will meet in about two weeks to iron out details for additional resources at the border.

"I'll be able to tell the people just exactly how many troops we're going to get, how many resources we're going to get and if we're going to get that fence built," Brewer said. "That's better than we have now."

Brewer said the President didn't promise specific numbers but did promise to address concerns about border security as part of a comprehensive package of immigration reform.

The President did not address questions about a possible court challenge to Arizona's immigration law, set to take effect in late July.

"This is a federal job," the President told CNN's Larry King later Thursday. "What we have to do is take on that federal responsibility by working with border states on border security. I've told Governor Brewer that we've already put more resources into border security than we ever have."

Administration officials who spoke to ABC15 said the decision remained in the hands of the Justice Department.

Brewer, meanwhile, made it clear the prospect of a court challenge to the state's immigration law is a separate issue.

"I already have five lawsuits," Brewer said, referring to other challenges already filed, testing the validity of the law.

Brewer said the President made it clear he's seeking a more comprehensive immigration reform package.

White House officials now say they are seeking a plan, "requiring those who come here illegally to pay a fine, pay back taxes, learn English, and get right with the law."

"Really what the president stressed with the governor today is that the way to fix this problem, in addition to the enforcement, is pass a law so we have an immigration system that works and he asked for her partnership in that," said Cecilia Munoz, the White House Chief of inter-governmental affairs.

But Brewer also made it clear she would not trade more troops and resources at the border for her support on immigration reform.

"I made it perfectly clear to him that I was not interested in any issue as far as comprehensive illegal immigration reform," the Governor said.

About 200 protesters gathered outside the White House as the meeting took place, with familiar slogans like "yes we can."

Protesters say the immigration law will test the resources of police departments and subject them to frivolous lawsuits.

"Americans want real solutions to the immigration problem and SB 1070 is the wrong solution to a serious problem," said Javier Marillo, a spokesman.

The Governor said she was aware of the protesters, but hadn't seen them as she entered the White House.

I would agree but let us not forget the real hero...

I am State Senator Russell Pearce, the author of SB1070, which was signed by Governor Jan Brewer.

Fear mongering and misinformation is the tool of the Left against this common sense legislation.

i read Gov Brewer was in DC for the governors meeting and she wanted to meet Obama to discuss for more support in securing AZ border but Obama brushed it off in the beginning until it made him look like he's slamming the AZ Gov in the media so Obama agreed to meet Gov Brewer while she's in town. It appears as if Gov Brewer made some accomplishments even if it was a short meeting. It sounded like it wasn't an official meeting just being in town so let's meet.

    Just got this email.

In my meeting with President Obama yesterday, I personally invited him to visit Arizona and see our open borders for himself. Only then might he understand that border security is the mandatory first step in any real effort to battle illegal immigration.

Unfortunately, the President declined to commit to a personal visit.

He also declined my request to increase the National Guard commitment, did not commit to build and extend the fence, and refused to pay the federal obligations for incarceration expenses - over $750 million just since 2003.

While the meeting was cordial and respectful, and I appreciate the opportunity to share the deep concerns of our citizens, a continued lack of action is devastating to Arizona. Washington’s continued reluctance to secure our border - with no political strings attached - only suggests the possibility of further violence, failures and delay. No more political two-steps! Now is the time to simply and honestly secure our international border.

It is my hope that the President has a change of heart and takes the time to personally meet in Arizona with our hard-working border enforcement agents, local law enforcement, border-region ranchers, and others who are confronted daily with Arizona’s border crisis and see for himself their problems and their justifiable fears. Until operational control of the border by the federal government is achieved, Arizonans and indeed our nation remain at risk.

Following our meeting today, I’m encouraged that there may be a new and more open willingness for direct dialogue between the federal government and Arizona. However, as I have said before, illegal immigration will not be solved by the promises that have been made, but rather, by the tangible results on the ground.

The President should see for himself how a lack of enforcement has turned Arizona into the superhighway of illegal drug and human smuggling activity. My invitation to come to Arizona remains open.

    Governor Jan Brewer
