Bren, she laughs at it now, but growing up in Seattle, it was serious business to them. It sounds bad, but back then, if they could pass themselves off as just being French (explaining the swarthy toned skin, dark brown eyes and black/brown hair) then your life could be better, otherwise there were few jobs for you (her grandparents left Mass. in 1922 because they were "found out", and came to Seattle), and you also could get shipped off to schools you'd rather not go to.

Nowdays, we simply do not see it the same, and are even appalled at this treatment of other Americans, but then it was acceptable.

But, it was a funny moment she can laugh at now, she was so sure she was being insulted.

Nothing better than good healthy case of self-loathing.

I guess I'm just not insecure about racial slurs that are thown my way. I just really don't care. I don't let offensive people have power over me. I know the person saying such things is ugly and I let them be what they are, which is ill tempered and ignorant. I'm not going to let them ruin my day and that is what they are trying to do. When they don't suceed, they get really upset and it makes them act even worse. Kinda fun out-witting them, and pushing their buttons at the same time just to watch them spin out of control.

I've been called Whitie and I laughed in their face and then asked how do you know?

I've been called Cracker and told the person that I'm not from Georgia.

I've been called a Honkey and I let them know that I do not pull up in front of people's homes and honk, instead, I do the respectful thing and get out of the car and knock on their door.

And my all time favorite... Gringo. Just ask them what does that mean?

Many "minorities" feel that they can speak about another race of people in any terms that they so desire because "minorities" cannot be racist. Of course, this is absurdly ridiculous, but nevertheless, it is not uncommon to hear "minorities" claim they cannot be racist since they are "minorities."
Just because people may use racial slurs to not necessarily mean that they are racist. How many of you can honestly say that they have never used a racial slur. I can't and I am not a racist. It is how the racial slur is used that makes it racist.

Anyone can be a racist, black or white, etc. Minorities that claim they cannot be racist do not know what racist mean.

Dixie, it is so true, when confronted by someone who likes to think they can hurt with words, you simply have to treat them exactly as they are acting, like children. Roll your eyes and say "whatever", or laugh, and it completely deflates them.

So if we can do it, why can't others who "think" they have been slighted by something said (which was not really racist at all)? Guess that's what we would all call being "thin skinned", oh, but maybe that should not be said, it might be misconstrued as also being racist, somehow (oh brother)!!
