If Chris Cannon is re-elected, it won't be a bad thing.


But it will be the same thing.


And maybe we've had enough of that. Maybe the race in the Third District of Utah is not for control of the country, maybe it's for control of the party.


On Tuesday, Republican primary voters in the Third District will choose between six-term incumbent Chris Cannon and newcomer Jason Chaffetz. One is a plodding wonk, the other is a passionate believer.


And in different circumstances, either of them would be a competent and acceptable congressman.


But these aren't different circumstances and this race isn't happening in a vacuum. It is taking place during an historic downturn in the prospects of conservatism and the Republican Party. In November, it is likely that liberal Democrats will win a lock on power in the federal government.


That fact will directly impact the opportunities and effectiveness of all Republican congressmen, particularly one from a relatively powerless state like Utah.


To be blunt, it means that in the next Congress, Republican representatives will not be legislators. They will be effectively cut out of all but the most token legislative role by the Democrat majority and leadership.


They won't be passing laws.


All they will be able to do is make speeches.


Chris Cannon's strength is passing laws. Jason Chaffetz' strength is making speeches.
Jason Chaffetz' strength is making powerful, cogent arguments in support of conservative principles. He is a preacher of the gospel of conservatism. He is a missionary for the cause of government based on constitutional principles.


He is exactly the sort of Jeremiah needed to call Washington to repentance.


Jason Chaffetz is a Ronald Reagan conservative. Chris Cannon is a George W. Bush conservative.


And that distinction is the difference which has divided and diffused the Republican Party and the conservative movement. A brief season of power corrupted the Republican Party and has now cost it both its influence and its soul.


Chris Cannon has been a steady supporter of President Bush. Unfortunately, that was true even when he should have challenged the president and restrained him. As the president reneged on the promise of conservatism, he should have met the steady opposition of Chris Cannon.


He did not.


Instead, Chris Cannon sometimes carried water for the very White House initiatives which sold out the soul of the party and left it in its current tattered state. Chris Cannon is part of the regime that failed.


And while he could easily serve out the rest of his life in Congress, and do useful work on a variety of issues, he would do so as just one more of the Washington compromisers. His infatuation with the process of governing has drowned out his commitment to cause. It's not that he lacks the courage of his convictions, it's that he has grown unsure of his convictions. That suits him very well to fit in Washington, where he is indistinguishable from the big-name Republicans who have endorsed him, but it leaves him oddly out of sync with patriotic and passionate work-a-day Americans in his district.


Chris Cannon is a Doug Wright [KSL ] Republican. Jason Chaffetz is an Ezra Taft Benson Republican.


Chris Cannon is a good man.


But Jason Chaffetz is the better choice.


As the Republican Party prepares for a season in the wilderness, Jason Chaffetz is a voice to cry in the wilderness. He is the man to stand in the well of the House, even if he's only speaking to a C-SPAN camera, and preach the truth.


Not the weasel words of equivocation and appeasement, but the clear, unyielding clarion call of conservatism. As our government under a Democratic Congress – and perhaps under a Democratic president – veers dangerously leftward, the bully pulpit will be the best tool the conservative cause will have.


And Jason Chaffetz is prepared to stand in that pulpit.


He is prepared as well to grab the Republican Party by its lapels and remind it of its roots and reason. The party has perished on its own sword. It sold its birthright for a mess of pottage.


And Jason Chaffetz is the type of candidate the party bosses don't want to see, but which the party itself must have.


He is a true believer.


He is full of articulate energy, ready to explain and argue for the inspired constitutional principles the people of the Third District are supposed to believe in.


If Chris Cannon is re-elected, it won't be a bad thing.


But it will be the same thing.


And we've had enough of that.


It's time to rip the coat and wave it overhead. It's time to stand up for truth. It's time to be a peculiar people. It's time Utah stopped trying to fit in and started leading.


It's time for the Third District seat to be an ensign to the nation of what this nation was meant to be and what it was meant to stand for. It's time to let principles guide policy.

..***Here in UTAH, we've made some BIG differences, like ousting David Leavitt [former Gov's brother] from the race [..a RINO, like Chris Cannon ]; ..Jason ALMOST got the 60% to OUST Cannon.. ONLY because BEFORE the third round of voting, the Cannon Camp was telling the Chaffetz delegates to LEAVE the convention early..! ..so there will be a "Run Cannon OUT of Utah on June 24th..!"

..oh, AND.. while MOST delegates were participating in the convention before the third round, six of the Cannon "bullies", were PHYSICALLY pushing two Chaffetz guys in the hallway, & Chris was PART of '..the six..', standing right there, urging his thugs on, watching & smirking..! I happened to come upon the scene [on my crutches broke knee 2x], so I pulled out the cell camera..!! Right off, one of the ‘bullies’ got in my face ..but I just kept the camera rolling, so it caused them to reconsider what other plans they might’ve had..! , ..Yes, there's even MORE of this story re those CORRUPT RINO’s, but later..!

Primary polling places almost deserted

Posted: 5:21 PM- Utah polling places were a wasteland today, as barely a trickle of voters cast ballots in the primary election featuring a tight contest between incumbent Rep. Chris Cannon and challenger Jason Chaffetz, and a hotly contested state treasurer's race.

In Salt Lake County, less than 3 percent of registered voters have gone to the polls, according to the clerk's office. In Utah County, turnout was somewhat better, registering about 5 percent.

"It's pretty, pretty slow," said Utah County Clerk Brian Thompson.

In many ways, the battle between Chaffetz and Cannon is a snapshot of national trends, reflecting a discontent with Congress, high gas prices and a shaky economy.

Chaffetz has pounded Cannon for months, running a relentless campaign against Congress' failure to control government spending and fix immigration problems.

Cannon has cited his conservative credentials and said he has the experience and seniority to represent the district in Washington.

Cannon outspent Chaffetz by nearly 7-to-1, and had endorsements from President Bush and Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett.

A poll conducted last week by Brigham Young University found widespread discontent in the 3rd Congressional District with the current state of the country.

The Cannon campaign spent weeks trying to identify the congressman's supporters and will be pulling out the stops to make sure they get to their polling places before they close at 8 p.m. Chaffetz has identified captains in each precinct in the district responsible for getting his voters to the polls.

The state treasurer's race has been characterized by claims by deputy treasurer Richard Ellis that his opponent, state Rep. Mark Walker, offered to keep Ellis in the office and raise his salary by $50,000 per year if Ellis dropped out, which may violate state law.

Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert, the state's top elections official, refused to take action on Ellis' complaint before the primary, and the Utah Supreme Court declined to compel Herbert to act. Ellis took his complaint to Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, a Walker supporter, who said he would appoint an independent investigator to look into the matter.
